News from Sky Sports this evening that Newcastle may be interested in Stoke City play-maker Glenn Whelan.
Glenn Whelan – while playing for Ireland
Other clubs said to be interested in the player are Wigan and West Bromwich Albion, but this is a surprising player for Newcastle to be linked with.
Newcastle do need more creativity in midfield, especially in central midfield, but we wonder if Glenn is good enough to be a first-teamer at Newcastle – we doubt it.
The 26 year-old Dublin-born midfielder started his career at Manchester City in 2001, but moved on to play for Sheffield Wednesday in 2004 after playing just once for City and 15 times on loan at Bury.
Glenn was in the side that won promotion to the Championship in May of 2005, and then in January of 2008 he joined Stoke City for a low £500K.
The 5’10” tall player played 159 times with 17 goals for Sheffield Wednesday, and has so far played 100 times with 6 goals for Stoke City.
We’d be very surprised if Glenn Whelan ended up at Newcastle United, but if he does he would simply be a squad player in the attacking central midfield positions.
Newcastle have little cover for Nolan and Barton in that area of the field, with Danny Guthrie not seemingly coming through much on Tyneside this season.
In total Glenn Whelan has 275 first class appearances in his career with 23 goals.
And in addition he has played 26 times for Ireland with a couple of goals.
What do you think?

Comment #81If Ashley still has the idea of looking mainly to upcoming youth talents from the English league don’t be surprised to see us sign someone like Wickham or that young lad from So’ton.

“I spoke to (Newcastle boss) Alan Pardew when we played them and he’s got no intention of selling him in this window or selling him at all he said, so that’s a no-goer,” said the Spurs boss, who was linked with a £20million bid for the England striker.

“I have never discussed it with Alan Pardew,” he said.
I hate him i always do, he puts on his front to the media, but everyone knows what hes like. I’m sure hes tried some dirty underhand way at getting to him as he always does.

Comment #89I’d be happy if we got in Taarabt and Larsson.
Both would be good signings.
I’d take another LB as well.

What playmaker, im pretty sure whoever takes cornors or free kicks, maybe even goal kicks has the most assists for the boring stoke city football club.

Comment #100My god some people on here are idiots. How is Pardew signing poor players as some have stated. Is HBA poor, is Larsson (likely) poor and from what i’ve heard, gradel. No, the fact is larsson will add some decent competition for jonas cos atm he only has routledge to compete with. At least he can cross and remember, we are lucky to be in 8th. On other days we could easily be in the relegation zone. Have some faith in our manager and trust he has the brains to pick out quality unlike CH. Pretty sure that tiote and HBA were Carr’s ideas.

Comment #104I’ve seen some things about Jefferson Farfan being linked with us, he has refused to talk to Magarth (Schalke) Manager and will leave in January he is a quick winger and scores as well, may be worth look at him depending on price of course.

Comment #109Rknuc- it was aldos duecher, had on trial but fat sam didn’t sign him.
As for larrson I’m praying to hod we sign him, he is quality, unbelievable range of passing.
Davy- no chance of signing taarabt.
Iv heard alot all day about who we are signing and who we are not, I can pretty much guarantee it’s seb!! Pards said in his interveiw yesterday that he is a player with the ability of bentley and a great crossed/passer of the ball.

Comment #110We don’t want to sign to many players this transfer window. As we will have to bring quite a few in in the summer when we’re strengthening for Europe 🙂

Comment #111Errr the reason we have a scouting network is to find players, managers job is to sell the club to players scouts have found
Get a grip you lot, no managers including fergie, wenger etc do the groundwork ….. Kinel you lot need to get a grip sometimes – ultimately scouts find em and managers just confirm hopefully ensuring they’ll fit into the squad, then they need to convince chairman ton part with cash which in toon works is difficult – I loved Hughton but he even said himself that signings were brought to his attention

Comment #112Would prefer Seb over Elia as he Larsson is proven in the EPL but Elia could be risky. Look at Liverpool. their fancy foreign signings aren’t looking so good now. ATM we need players withing proven Premier League experience and then when we are strong enough for europe (hopefully soon) then we should invest in foreign talent. But for now, lets get in some experience and develop our homegrown youth

Comment #115With a fit 11 by the end of the month with longer rest periods, the fact we’re getting less cards, the impending fitness of Arfa and Gosling, the hopeful ascension of Best, and our team spirit, there’s no reason we can’t compete for Europe next season. Heck, we could do it this season.

Comment #120stevep, all I’m saying is we don’t want to many long term contracts. As rknufc says if we beat the scum and as RossGellar says, we are improving all the time. I don’t see why we can’t contend for a place in Europe and for that loans would be better than long term contracts, so we can strengthen for next season in summer. You’re right survival is our first priority but why not go for all we can?
