Newcastle Reported Interest In Stoke’s David Whelan

News from Sky Sports this evening that Newcastle may be interested in Stoke City play-maker Glenn Whelan.

Glenn Whelan – while playing for Ireland

Other clubs said to be interested in the player are Wigan and West Bromwich Albion, but this is a surprising player for Newcastle to be linked with.

Newcastle do need more creativity in midfield, especially in central midfield, but we wonder if Glenn is good enough to be a first-teamer  at  Newcastle – we doubt it.

The 26 year-old Dublin-born midfielder started his career at Manchester City in 2001, but moved on to play for Sheffield Wednesday in 2004 after playing just once for City and 15 times on loan at Bury.

Glenn was in the side that won promotion to the Championship in May of 2005, and then in January of 2008 he joined Stoke City for a low £500K.

The 5’10” tall player played 159 times with 17 goals for Sheffield Wednesday, and has so far played 100 times with 6 goals for Stoke City.

We’d be very surprised if Glenn Whelan ended up at Newcastle United, but if he does he would simply be a squad player in the attacking central midfield positions.

Newcastle have little cover for Nolan and Barton in that area of the field, with Danny Guthrie not seemingly coming through much on Tyneside this season.

In total Glenn Whelan  has 275 first class appearances in his career with 23 goals.

And in addition he has played 26 times for Ireland with a couple of goals.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

What absolute lies in that Mirror article! Carroll clearly got injured in the City game and was visibly limping!

have the press got nothing better to do? i thought they had to write stories that were in the public interest?

quote fron the sky commentary of the game –

“50 Carroll is okay to continue after picking up a knock that briefly required the referee to stop play.”

seems fair to say he had a reaction to this knock rather than some bloke saying he got injured two days later and a source (reliable bloke this mr source) close to the player

As well as FOUR Jagerbombs, 6ft 4in Carroll downed TWO pints of Fosters and around SIX bottles of Peroni.

Christ almighty, he had a warm up before a night out! Lads! Phone an ambulance!

i wonder if the only player we had lined up was bentley. i may be looking for excuses but the fact that pardew said we were only after players who would fight for a place hours before news broke of bentley going to brum.

just a suggestion but maybe they have guaranteed him first team football.

prefer our stance to be honest if thats the case and as its been pointed out may allow us to sign seb. although i do think it could drag on all transfer window if brum think they have a chance of renewing his contract unless he says he will defo not sign.

Peroni is an Italian lager and is rated at 5.1% (unless it’s the normal stuff then it’s 4.something%) – and it comes in a bottle.

I’m sure we’ve all drank more than that and haven’t managed to fall off two bar stools.
