News from Sky Sports this evening that Newcastle may be interested in Stoke City play-maker Glenn Whelan.
Glenn Whelan – while playing for Ireland
Other clubs said to be interested in the player are Wigan and West Bromwich Albion, but this is a surprising player for Newcastle to be linked with.
Newcastle do need more creativity in midfield, especially in central midfield, but we wonder if Glenn is good enough to be a first-teamer at Newcastle – we doubt it.
The 26 year-old Dublin-born midfielder started his career at Manchester City in 2001, but moved on to play for Sheffield Wednesday in 2004 after playing just once for City and 15 times on loan at Bury.
Glenn was in the side that won promotion to the Championship in May of 2005, and then in January of 2008 he joined Stoke City for a low £500K.
The 5’10” tall player played 159 times with 17 goals for Sheffield Wednesday, and has so far played 100 times with 6 goals for Stoke City.
We’d be very surprised if Glenn Whelan ended up at Newcastle United, but if he does he would simply be a squad player in the attacking central midfield positions.
Newcastle have little cover for Nolan and Barton in that area of the field, with Danny Guthrie not seemingly coming through much on Tyneside this season.
In total Glenn Whelan has 275 first class appearances in his career with 23 goals.
And in addition he has played 26 times for Ireland with a couple of goals.
What do you think?

Comment #183Why feel sorry for Seb Larsson joining us,Hes a canny player for canny price !.Snap him up,Without Tiote out,We can push Joey Barton in the middle then have Seb Larsson on the Right.
