With Wayne Routledge shipped out on loan to his former club QPR yesterday, there is talk about who will come in to replace the winger at Newcastle.
Shaun Wright-Phillips – Newcastle interested
We had put one or two players down we thought Newcastle could be after (or was it 100?), and there’s news today, which at least seems true, that Newcastle are after Shaun Wright-Phillips of Manchester City.
Wright-Phillips’ agent has confirmed that Newcastle have expressed an interests in the 29 year-old England International, and in an interesting twist, the agent has said that money will not prevent his client from moving to St. James’ Park.
Newcastle have already said to have made inquiries about both Wright-Phillips and also Birmingham’s Seb Larsson, but reports today suggest Newcastle have gone no further than that for either player.
As we’ve pointed out before, Manchester City really need a big clear-out of some of their players on high wages, in order to be able to balance their books, and meet the new Financial Fair Play rules that UEFA will introduce next season.
Loans are OK for this season, but the Eastland’s club will need to sell some of their players in the summer, and would of course like to sell some of them now, if they can.
Apparently Shaun Wright-Phillips is on a massive £60K/week at Eastlands, and that might pose a problem for Newcastle, since they themselves have to ensure they can balance their books next season too, with players’ wages being the biggest expenditure at any club.
Wright-Phillips agent, Wayne Lindsay, is hoping Newcastle will not be put off by his client’s wages:
“I can confirm that Newcastle United are definitely an option that he does have,” “At the moment, they’re one of four options and it’s really down to the player himself which club he decides to go to.”
“I know what is being said, but I don’t see wages being a stumbling block if he goes to Newcastle. He’s really just assessing what his opportunities and options are and it’ll be a decision taken for football reasons.”
“Clearly it is well documented what his current situation (on the fringes of the Manchester City squad) is. The next move may well be a permanent one so it is important what he decides to do. There isn’t really a timeline as such – it just needs to be done before the end of January.”
It seems fairly simple then if Shaun has four options – and if he doesn’t decide to come to Newcastle, the Tyneside club should look elsewhere.
What Darren Bent has proved in the last two days, is that you don’t want players at the club who are just there for the money – otherwise they will leave when the first better offer comes in – as seems to have happened to Darren.
It was only a month ago Bent was waxing lyrical about the Sunderland club, and we heard him say the same things on Sky Sports yesterday – but this time it was about Aston Villa, who have overpaid for him, which tells you how concerned they are about their PL survival.
Bent is only now at Aston Villa because of the huge wages he’s getting, so let’s not be naive about that, and Darren left Sunderland in the lurch, and manager Steve Bruce had every right to blast the player last night – and good for Steve.
Newcastle must only go after players who really want to play at Newcastle, and even take a pay cut – to do just that.
Otherwise the club shouldn’t even be trying to sign them.
If Shaun decides to go somewhere else, that’s fine – it’s really up to the player himself in this case – even if Newcastle can meet his high wage demands, which would seem unlikely.
But we’ll see, miracles do happen, and in football too.
One last thing, Shaun is a good player and he’s also an emotional player, who would be lifted by the passionate Newcastle crowd, so he may even favor a move to Tyneside – we’ll know soon enough.
Howay The Lads!!

Comment #7A welcome and sensible piece of rationality from Ed. If SWR comes to NUFC it has to be our terms not just his. If Larsson’s pay demands were what proved to be a stumbling block where does that leave us in regard to SWR’s apparent wage level? There has to be a combination of a desire to play for us combined with a fair days pay for a fair days play. Players have to realise that the streets of Tyneside are not paved with gold for the fans so they cannot be for anybody else either. That said – with Routledge out on loan we still need a quality winger. Who?

Comment #8Good point about the wages Ed, people forget if you offer players higher wages to attract them to the club it makes it virtually impossible to move them on if it doesn’t work out. This is why we just can’t get rid of players like Smith, Cambell and to a lesser extent Perch. The clubs where these three could play are not in the premier league and Championship clubs simply cannot afford the risk.
I imagine that’s why Wayne has gone, AP doesn’t think he’s Prem class and someone has come in for him, this might be his only chance to offload him.
As for SWP he is only going to play 2nd fiddle to Joey so is not good value on the wages even if he was half price at 30k.
We don’t need cover for Joey, Gossling, RTaylor and Ranger if need some pace late in the game can all provide cover.
LB and LM please instead……only if they’re good enough mind not for the sake of it!

I think we are seeing a lot more of this common sense coming through, that we basically say to players “There’s your offer, do you want to sign?”
Rather than what we used to say which was “How much do you want and you can sign”

Comment #15sorry but this wouldnt be a goo signing, like a lot of people saying hes just WR but a bigger name, he has no end product at the end of the day. We al;so need to go for players who want to play for us and not just coming because they cant get a game at their own club. Look he is a decent player but we just dont need him, i feel JB is working wonders on the right midfield position, and with gosling coming back my midfield would be this:
barton tiote gosling ben arfa
nolan
carroll
i really dont think we need a striker in, shola is doing ok, ranger on his day and when he wants to be is very big handful, i believe he only needs a prem goal to kick start his career.

Comment #17really?… i mean really? of all the raw talent out there that are much younger, cheaper and would demand less wages….and would be honoured to don the toon shirt…. this is how far we are casting our net? this is ridculous! 12 days till transfer deadline, and all this faffin about, we’re guna end up panic buying and end up getting somebody who has a similar game to wayne? let this be pure cods for god sake!

I was looking at Mangala earlier. Some other lad’s put an atricle up about him and Boyata being good shouts for the Toon.
He plays defensive mid, centerback AND LEFT BACK – I say get him in now before the rest of the world starts paying attention to him.

Comment #20I still rate SWP, by the way. If he’s prepared to take a pay cut and just wants to play football, I’m happy with that. He’s been allowed to stagnate at Citeh and it’s likely that he just needs a bit of a jump start. He’d get that with us, I reckon.

Comment #37The only reason I can see for the WR not being confirmed yet is that theres some kind of exchange going to happen.
It seems common knowledge now that WR will be going to QPR, but because it hasnt been officially confirmed yet, IMO i reckon it means Taarabt may be on his way, especially if we were scouting him again the other day.

Comment #38No to SWP he is to old & no end product, just an older version of WR but with grey hair!!!!.
I would like to Niko K, J O’hara of spurs, The Dutch boy Fer & lastly Richards & Boyata at City?, I believe these can improve our squad whether we get 1 or 2.
