Best And Lovenkrands Both Ineffective Saturday

We were disappointed in yesterday’s result at Blackburn, but not with the display, because the lads again ran the midfield.

Nile Ranger – looked good in last 15 minutes – again

Overall Newcastle were the better side, and when things are like that, you really expect the lads to wrap up all  three points.

We didn’t think Best nor Lovenkrands were very good at all yesterday, and of course Newcastle were putting cross after cross into the box, as usual.

But when you have two strikers not great in the air, it has to be expected we’d win few high balls,  and Samba got most of them.

If Newcastle are going to continue with their current strategy, then we need players up front who are good in the air.

Shola Ameobi, Nile Ranger and Shefki Kuqi are all good in the air, and we have to think that young Nile Ranger needs more playing time, at least while Ameobi is still out.

We saw former Newcastle player Gary Calderwood wear a Lone Ranger type mask in Wigan’s good 1-1 draw at Liverpool yesterday, to protect his broken cheekbone,  and it didn’t seem to affect his play too much.

Shola is out in Detroit right now, getting a face mask fitted, but we have to think it will be a bit bigger and more complicated than the one Gary Calderwood wore yesterday.

We hope to see a change up front for the game at Birmingham on Tuesday night, or at least that Nile Ranger can come on immediately in the second half.

And given the lack of penetration of Best and Lovenkrands yesterday,  it wouldn’t hurt to give Shefki a longer run out on Tuesday night. He gets a goal and it would be huge news and great for Shefki and the Newcastle club.

The Birmingham game is the last game for about 11 days, until we face Bolton Wanderers at home, and so a win would be great on Tuesday night.

Maybe Shola can be fit for the game against Bolton, but it’s probably a bit too  early for that.

Newcastle also need probably 10 points to be safe, so 3 points on Tuesday night would help with that too.

And maybe Ranger and Shefki can get the goals. 😀

We know one thing from yesterday – Newcastle can have all the possession they want – but if  they don’t have somebody who can put the  ball into the net – we’ll not win.

Comments welcome, but please be civil to others..

Anyone else think if possible we should get back Wayne Routledge from QPR and try putting him as a forward? I just think he can do the job as a forward just think Routledge and Ranger it will be load of pace at least 😀

i think that would go completely against the point of needing someone who can header the ball i toon, imo we need a lot of strength up top, especially with bartons skill at delivering lofted balls to peoples heads.

Couldn’t agree more Ed’, makes the Carroll sale and lack of signings even more of a joke, because the lads didn’t lose two points yesterday the board did!

makes me laugh when you hear players leading up to a game say things like ” i just want a fiar chance” or “i can fill AC boots” etc then when they get a chance are pretty toothless, both Best and Loven have had plenty to say about oppotuities but their performances against fulham and blackburn ( and 45 mins arsenal) were shocking

i may get shot down here but i dont rate ranger much either shocking frst touch and no composure when shola back i would get ben arfa just behind him or possibly give Airy a chance

Good teams always adapt with the players & formations that they were employing. Unlike Newcastle, we will stay play the same long ball even though Michael Owen and Rooney leads the line.

Would that not be the same as having Lovenkrands up front which is not working. We need Shola fit and HBA playing off him when he is back fit. In the meantime while Best blows hot and cold he is our and excuse the pun best option with Ranger who is showing signs of becoming a good player.

Ashley need to invest in two strikers come the summer and shift out Lovenkrands and mabye Best depending on his form for the rest of the season. And I would love to see us sign Oscar Cordozo from Benfica he is 6ft 3 and has a cracking left foot & Hulk from Porto as he would add carry the famous number 9 well, Although I have a bad feeling the cheap option could be taken and the Carlton Cole could end up at SJP… That would not be good!

It’s a depressing case of reaping what you sow. We all know the limitations of the squad regarding striking options. With all the hope and big talk in the world, lovenkrands and Best are decent runners off the ball, but can’t be relied upon to get their shot in, or hold up the ball.

Shola whilst not a reliable scorer, holds the ball up well enough and brings people into play in the final 3rd: guti, nolan, barton – who can then support and attack loose balls around the box.

We should have brought someone else regardless of Carroll’s exit during the transfer window, we didn’t and now we can’t act surprised that our 4th, 5th, 6th choice options are struggling.

If we’d had Daniel Sturridge, Robbie Keane, Demba Ba, Roque Santa Cruz, Carlos Vela, Yakubu or Eidur Gudjohnsen in our team yesterday we would have won that game.

    Firstly… it’s CaldWELL.

Secondly, this article is absolutely ridiculous. The two guys are getting into their stride. Yes, Lovenkrands should’ve scored, but I thought he was more than a handful for Samba and Nelsen – both two robust defenders. Same with Best.

They didn’t score, which is ultimately what Strikers are marked on, but they did run the line well and they were lively. Best has only played a handful of Premiership games, it’ll take time for him to get up to speed. Stop being so quick to judge, it’s pathetic.

Pardew is treating Ranger 100% correct in my eyes. He doesn’t want him being the billy big shot, so he’s not feeding his ego by giving him starts all the time. He’s being used as an impact sub because when he has started, he’s been ineffectual as the game goes on. Pardew’s building Ranger up correctly. Instead of throwing him in the deep end and watching him fade out.

As for choosing Airey over Loven or Best… have a word with yourselves. Even Phil Airey wouldn’t be saying he should start over those two.

Some of the comments on this page makes me despair. A solid, gritty performance yesterday, AWAY might I add… and you’s still find room to have a go.

What made it even more shocking was that our defence and midfield players (with exception of Nolan) was working their ass off to get that goal!
But our strikers didnt do them justice!
    Best was completely anonymous yesterday!

supervil… if that is the case, it’s scandalous that we are blooding strikers in this situation. This is more about the woeful planning of the club, than having a pop at them.

They man need to time to ‘get into their stride’, but more importantly we need to not get relegated. We can groom prospects for the future, give players the chance to find the feet, but not at the expense of premiership survival.

    Stop being so negative everyone.

Yesterday the strikers were being fed with crosses and long balls. If we had had Rooney up front yesterday he would have struggled to beat Samba and Nelsen in the air- they’re huge.

Overall, we ran the game and could have won. But at the end of the day we have lost something like 6 in a row against Blackburn before this game so I think it’s a decent result.

i think best is not the problem i think it is lovenkrands it is now clear that sadly the championship is his level. i would give ranger a go up front with best until we get ireland back then i would play nolan up top.
Best in my opinion has realy come on he lays the ball off well is skilfull and when he gets the chance he takes it however he does need to improve in the air as he misses a few half decent chances in hte air.
I have seen nothing of this Airey is he a target man or speedy or is he a bit of both???

Hallo peeps. Nepal calling. FC Ashley is top gambler playing fast and loose with Noowcassel. He sells Andy Carrot for top dollar to go to casino and hopes that the other forwards can keep the Toon up. Best striker is Stroller Ameobi and most fans were desperate to get rid of him a couple of years ago because he is so crap. How bad does that make the rest of the stirkers. FC Ashley has worst stirkers in league.

you guys (most of you) are ****ing ridiculous!

Lovenkrands IS Premier League quality. I wish I had the motivation to go dig through old comments from Autumn last year before Peter got into his stride….the same tripe you guys are posting now. He did really well in the first half yesterday. Not so great the second half, but hey, I haven’t seen our captain have a good game this year (2011!). It’s not our fault their only chance of getting any service comes from Jose or Joey. Nothing comes from the middle and not alot comes from deep in the final third on the flanks, where Loven is most effective.

Best, well, that’s a different story. His decision making can be extremely poor at times and when it is correct, his quality lets him down.

And to the guy who said Ranger has a sh!t first touch….you must be talking about the one bad touch he had where he lost possession….obviously you haven’t watched NUFC enough to realize Ranger can be the real deal, and he’s got the best overall qualities out of all of our strikers….umm, did you not see him skin the sh!t out of Salgado yesterday? It was beautiful

I’m not commenting on these boards for a while, or at least reading the tripe some of you children post. It’s embarrassing that “the best fans in the world” have such uninformed, uneducated followers of the game…..and the sad thing is you think you are all so right

I had to reply to this. I absolutely agree. The problem with this forum is that it is full of little young numpties who are clueless about football and give such extreme polarised opinions of our players. They were either great or pure crap on the back of each and every single match.

Ther’re 100s of thousands of Toon fans. I do not need to hear the thoughts of silly young adolescent kids who barely grasp the notion of “holding a ball up” besides physically holding it in hand.

Their football education being that of the stats on Football manager and FIFA. When they recommend certain players, they bring up names they would NEVER have had a chance in hell of watching. Boils my p1sser.

So to add substance to my own rant, I will say Matty your right. Loven is premier League quality. These lads have got only several games under their belt. Have Lovenkrands and Best forgotten how to score goals ? I don`t think so. Lovenkrands scored important goals for us in the Championship last season and helped us to return to the PL this season. Best score 3 goals against West Ham. They need more playing time to improve their football. Let`s forget about Carroll, please, as he is a Liverpool player and he was sold because football is business and NUFC need money to bring in 2 or 3 good players like a winger and another striker. If Newcastle United can bring in a good number 10 or an attacking midfielder it will be good. Newcastle United will not be relegated as the players have shown commitment to the club.

if we looked back 4 months and asked every toon fan if they would be happy with 10th spot at this stage of the season then i reckon atleast 90% would. does that not mean that our team are doing well, i would think so and that is even without ben arfa and steven taylor for most of the season who are two of our best players who would both definatly make the starting 11 if fully fit.

we are having a great season considering we have just been promoted and we will have funds to improve for next season when we may be able to make a charge at a europa league spot and get back where we belong until some of the big clubs go broke, then we will be able to challenge for the champions league.

i hope that was a positive enough post for everyone.
