There’s some good news today coming from French sources, that Newcastle United have already started preliminary negotiations with French club Lille to acquire 23 year-old Gervinho.
Gervinho – Newcastle open negotiations for player
The reports are saying that the famous Newcastle club have opened tentative negotiations, as they look to tie up the £10M rated Ivory Coast International.
And with Cheick Tiote committing himself to the club on Friday, you have to think that our midfield dynamo can persuade his Ivory Coast team-mate to join him on Tyneside – we hope so anyway.
Gervinho can play on either wing or as a striker, and from what we can tell he looks like he could become an excellent buy for the Newcastle club.
Gervinho is said to be one of a number of striker targets being considered by Newcastle, but he has to be near or at the top of the list, for Newcastle to start negotiations now.
This is not the first time Newcastle have been linked with the Ivory Coast International, who has 19 caps and 5 goals for his country, and who was also interesting other clubs last month.
Lille wanted to keep the player through the end of the season, to help them win the French League, and the side are currently second top of the French league, just one point behind Rennes with a game in hand. Lille entertain Lyon this afternoon, who are in 4th place.
Gervinho has scored 23 goals in 53 games for the French club, and 10 goals in 21 games so far this season.
Gervinho turns 24 in May, and started his career at Belgium club Bevern in 2005, and moved to French club Le Mans in 2007, before joining Lille in 2009.
The 5’11″ player has over 165 first class appearances in his career, and has scored over 40 goals.
Since his contract runs out in 16 months, Newcastle may be able to get a decent deal for the player, and we’d be surprised if the fee is as much as £10M.
We have to hope that we can tie up one or two of our major targets before the end of the season.
Comments welcome.

Comment #2Not an outstanding scoring record as a striker, but if its as a winger then thats a great record. Didnt Tiote recommend him earlier in the season? He fits the type of player we’re in for these days, young and promising.

Comment #3Yeah Tiote did recommend him earlier in the season, but its sunday so I dbout these “sources” are true and just the gossip press. If there are any quotes from his agent / his club then i’ll believe it…

Comment #6would be a very very very good signing. Like Craig Bellamy, but a lot younger 🙂 He and Best at his best or Ranger with improved finishing would be a nice pair.

Comment #10Gervinho would be a very exciting signing, but I’m really not sure if this rumour is true. Either way, the french league is a very good place to start looking. EL Arabi would be another excellent signing!

Comment #12Pardew was at rennes – toulouse, but Marveaux didn’t play as he is injured. Maybe he was looking at class act Etienne Capoue which would be an absolute class act signing for our defense? I also hope for Marveuax as he would be a potential coup!

We currently have a good squad, just need to replace the dead wood (Campbell and Smith alteast) and buy a couple of first teamers (Winger and Striker). If we can do that as well as get in a new bunch of youngsters from all over the place, I think we’ll have a good season next time round.

Comment #16I’d take him in a heartbeat! He’s got a very good future ahead of him. He’s also Tiote’s international team-mate! Bring him and Falcao from Porto.

I think its why Tiote committed himself to such a long contract.
Get him and Sturridge, what a strike force that would be

Comment #19I would also love to see doumbia and gervinho here. Both of these players were suggested by tiote i think. We should definitely look into them as we could form a good link between tiote, gervinho and doumbia 🙂

Comment #20magpie999 – I think so to, why else would Tiote commit himself to Newcastle when we aren’t even safe yet. If we get him and either Falcao or Sturridge we’re a team pushing for the Europa League every year until we’re good enough for CL.

Comment #21This would be a great signing.
@Magpie999 – Sturridge is going straight back to Chelsea like, or another one of the big clubs. No way he’ll come here. He was great yesterday. Had Enrique and Colo tied up in knots, how many people have done that this year?

I’m not too sure, I think they may ship Drogba out in the summer so Sturridge would probably step up…HOWEVER
I think what will happen at Chelsea will be they won’t win the league, Mourinho will return as manager and Drogba will stay as a result.
Sturridge will not sit behind Torres, Anelka and Drogba.

Comment #26Seems to be an excellent player and that’s not a bad ratio goals per game in my eyes.Compare it to number 23 for instance.
Sturridge would also be good if we can get him.Or perhaps Elmander on a free.
Either way too here we are after Gervinho as opposed to Carlton Cole gets the hair on the back of the neck standing up.
Looks like we need a left back as well.

Comment #28I too think Gervinho and Sturridge would complete out forward line-up. Especially with Gerviho’s flexibility on the wing, or in a 3-man forward line, with Arfa on the other side and Sturridge in the middle. Would be awesome!
Sturridge may want to move from Chelsea with Torres and Anelka/Drogba he’s not gonna get a look in.
I do think that there may be a further strategy with Tiote’s signing (in addition to adding a brilliant player), as it open the door to a few great ivorian players which hopefully with Tiote whispering sweet nothing in their ear combined with our deeper summer purse we can get Gervinho!
Gervinho and Sturridge please!!
Simpson….Taylor…..Collo…..Enrique
…………….Barton…………Tiote……………
………………………Nolan………………………
….Gervinho……………………….Arfa………
…………………….Sturridge……………………
Wow – what a team, and that’s just adding those two players. Then with a bit of depth signing Ireland and Larsson on a free, some LB/CB cover, clear out a few players like Guthrie, Smith, Campbell.
SORTED!!!!

Comment #31And about the player. What can I say… I want that player in our team. Hoping for him to come, and not some PL “proven” player for twice the price and with huge ego.
Although that guy Sturige or however you write his name, he is class. but I am sure his price now is already 12M

Comment #34Would be a class signing, exactly the kind of player who can push the team on to the next level
Secure safety, sign up Barton and Enrique and we’re looking good for the summer
Get in cover for LB and CB, with another quality striker and we’ll be looking strong to challenge for top ten next season
