The Evening Chronicle is reporting that Aston Villa have won the race to sign Wigan’s Charles N’Zogbia.
Charles N’Zogbia – Aston Villa have won the race to sign this Frenchman?
And we think it’s been excellent business by Aston Villa too – that they sold Stewart Downing for £20M to – who else – Liverpool, and then replaced him with what we consider to be a better player, in Charles N’Zogbia, and for just £9M and maybe even less.
So not only do we believe that Aston Villa have a better winger now, but they have also made a profit of £11M – thanks to Liverpool.
We’re really not sure why Liverpool are paying over the odds for players like Stewart Downing and Andy Carroll, other than they are maybe very keen to have a good English presence in their team.
We know that Charles’ contract runs out next summer, and therefore £9M may be a little high in terms of a transfer fee, but Newcastle got around £7M for N’Zogbia thirty months ago, and he’s now a better player.
And therefore, using that logic, we think it would have been a good deal for Newcastle to pay £9M for the French International, and tie him down to say a five year deal on Tyneside.
The fact that Charles also said he would be keen to return to Newcastle, makes it a little hard to take, but we do think it’s an opportunity that Newcastle have missed.
And again, it seems to be because of the club’s unwillingness to pay out a high transfer fee for a very good player.
That’s of course if the news is true that Charles will join Aston Villa.
We’re disappointed if indeed Newcastle have missed out on the French International.
What do you think about this?
