In an interview with the Sunday Mirror, Alan Shearer has talked about the Newcastle transfer window.
Alan Shearer expects Newcastle to spend more money
Shearer thinks Newcastle have lost their best two players in Andy Carroll and former captain Kevin Nolan, and both have left the Tyneside club in the last six months.
Andy joined behemoth Liverpool, and Kevin Nolan surprisingly left Newcastle last month, when he couldn’t get a new five year deal, and decided to join West Ham United in the Championship.
This is what Alan told the Mirror today:
“Everyone was obviously disappointed that Andy Carroll left. But it was understandable when you look at the money they got for him £35M is a helluva lot of cash.:
“Of course, you don’t want to lose your top players and Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan were probably Newcastle’s two best players.”
“I would be surprised of they did not go out and spend some more money. I hope that they do because they had a decent season on their return to the Premier League.:
“If they can improve again next season – that is all the fans want.” “Last season was decent and now the supporters will be looking for Alan Pardew to take them into the top 10.”
There was news this morning that Newcastle have a agreed a £6.5M fee (€7.5M) with PSG for striker Mevlut Erdinc, so it seems like terms must now be agreed with the player, and Mevlut is likely to join Newcastle in early August.
Mevlut would be the fifth signing this summer, with Yohan Cabaye, striker Demba Ba, Sylvain Marveaux, and 18 year-old Mehdi Abeid already having joined the club.
But we’d still like to see a couple more players signed, and if Jose Enrique finally leaves the club at the end of a six month long soap opera, that a new left back is also brought in to replace him.
Comments welcome.

Comment #2I hope Erdinc doesn’t end up another infamous Newcastle centre-forward-flop. We seem to have the worst luck when it comes to signing centre forwards in recent times. Kluivert, Xisco, Luque, Vi-bloody-duka etc.

Comment #3Enriques “soap opera” is non existent. He has said no, only Pardew remains hopeful.
In any case, Shearer is right, we do need a few more bits and pieces here and there. But with Mevlut signed soon hopefully, we’ll pack a completely different punch than last year. If we close our dealings with him, then i’m happy for more. I suspect that we’ll continue building in the next window any way.

I expect us to sell in the January window.
Probably Tiote, probably on the last day.
Then we’ll all be saying 20M. We couldn’t refuse that.
LLambias will say 100% of the money will stay in the club … and the fans will wait for it to be spent and we’ll wait and wait …

I just wrote exactly what I expect from the owner and the player.
I also expect it won’t be spent on a decent replacement.

Aye, i guess some will expect that…
Carroll was bid on by Liverpool two or three times that window. In the last day they smashed their former bids and put up £35 million for a player thats hardly proven. And i wouldn’t say Carrolls season finished in good form either…
For that kind of money, for that kind of player, u’d say yes too. As for contingency plans, i think Pardew was a bit new to Newcastle at the time, so they hardly had time to work on anything incase someone should come in and bid £35 million on the last day of the window.
I mean, be realistic. The new window isn’t over yet either.
They’ve said it’s a 3 year plan, we wont get all the players we need in one window.

Comment #19Liverpool sold Torres – they spent the money on Carrol & Suarez.
The scum sell Bent & Henderson … they spend the money on … well nothing fantastic, bar Wickham, but they spent it on players.
None of this wages bollox that we get spun.
They use their SKY money for wages.
We use our SKY money to repay loans to Ashley. Loans given because his decisions got us relegated.
28.6M will have been repaid by August 2011.
That’s where the money has been going.

Comment #20The sound of chickens coming home to roost is deafening. Erdinc is another 2nd rate cheap option. The club already know that ben Arfa won’t be back before September, and are we sure he is a ncle player? Seems to have no faith in our 3rd rate medical team. no excuses aboput the abysmal performances in the States. Other English sides are coping with the heat and beating MLS sides. The tour is a bloody farce. Simpson flying home now. This club really is a 2nd rate outfit now. The only 5 year plan Ashley has, is a financial one for his own benefit. He hasn’t a clue about footballing matters, and couldn’t care. Why the hell did he buy a football club?

Comment #21Ashley sits in the stands with a b&w scarf around his neck, watching Best, Shola, Lovenkrands & Kuqi … and he has 2000M slopping around his bank account.
Makes me sick.

Comment #23Yadda Yadda, End of the world, Yadda Yadda, Relegation Battle, Yadda Yadda we are doomed!..
Give it a rest guys… you doom mongers are like a broken record. We get it already ffs. You dont like Ashley and you have a lack of Faith in the Newcastle Club. The team you apparantly support.
Every article its the same whineing and moaning. We cant do anything about it, and your constant moaning doesnt do anything to help the situation. So sit down. Shut up and have a little Faith. If we get Relegated, we get relegated. Ill still support the Black and White, and on the bright side, it could Force Ashley to leave.

Comment #25@geoff- few things for your notice.
1. He is not taking back the loan he has paid, about 150 million. He gets it back when he sells the club. Basically, when some new owner comes in, he will pay the buying price and will have to clear the debts to “outsiders”, ie. Ashley. So your view on ma pocketing money is wrong.
2. We are not in the current scenario because of relegation, but due to years and years of mismangenent. Relegation worsened our conditions, but not the main reason. We could have been another leeds or portsmoth and we would not be even discussing 35 million.
3. And rather than still saying millions in interest to banks, we are getting am interest-free loan and i would take it any day.
4. Regarding signings, nobody has said we would not sign anyone, but we would not sign anyone on stupid prices or wages or someone we do not need (zog) just to make the fans happy.

Comment #28Actually geoff77 those loans are owed to him not because of relegation but because he never did due diligence on the club before buying it, that is the worst bit of business he has conducted since being at the club as far as i’m concerned. Since then his business plans for the club have been pretty good. Yes his communicaiton with the fans is not great but how much commiunication do Man Utd give to the fans, not much, why? Because they are running a business and sometimes you need to play your cards close to your chest. We played the waiting game with erding and it looks to have paid off, that is the way to run a business. Not to shout from the roof tops how much you have left to spend.

Comment #39In other news have you guys seen that The Times (ie not a crappy tabloid) is reporting that Ferguson is thinking of bidding for Joey Barton!!! That would be a huge surprise. If he offers us cash + Anderson in for a years loan, or perhaps Marcheda that could be quite a good deal for us.

You are wrong about the loans mate.
111M due to him not doing due diligence.
28.6M lent since.
12.3M was paid back to him last August from broadcasting cash.
Another 16.5M will be paid back in the year starting August 2011.
