Newcastle United were the big winners at the 2012 Sport Newcastle Awards.
Alan Pardew – Newcastle’s Sports Personalty Of The Year
And Londoner Alan Pardew was the winner of the city’s sports personality of the year, but unfortunately Alan was unable to attend the Newcastle Civic center earlier this week because of family business, and Assistant manager John Carver received the award on Alan’s behalf.
Veteran goalkeeper Steve Harper, who turns 37 next Wednesday, and has been at Newcastle since 1993 when he was signed by Kevin Keegan, received the Wilkinson Sword for services to sport.
The Newcastle United Foundation, which we support fully on our web-site, claimed the Community Award, and young players Remie Streete and Alex Gilliead also picked up football awards.
17 year-old Remie Streete, captain of the Newcastle U18 side and a dominating 6’2″ center-back from South Shields, received the Wor Jackie Award, which is given to the best U-18 player at Newcastle United.
Remie has been training with the Newcastle first team recently, and Alan Pardew says he could make the Newcastle first team squad on a permanent basis, and sooner rather than later.
England Under-16 forward Alex Gilliead was presented with the Jack Hixon Award by Alan Shearer, and the trophy is dedicated to the scout who discovered the Newcastle legend, and Newcastle’s top goal-scorer ever with 206 goals (in 404 appearances), beating out Jackie Milburn by just 6 goals.
Former winners of the Jack Hixon award are Remie Streete and striker Adam Campbell, two 17 year old promising local lads, and of course Remie won the Wor Jackie Award this year, in remembrance of the great Jackie Milburn.
Newcastle Eagles claimed the Frank Brennan Award for sporting achievement, and golf coach John Harrison won the Stan Calvert award.
Here are the various winners:
