James Tavernier, who is well thought of at Newcastle, has returned from his loan spell at MK Dons, and he goes straight into the squad for the Good Friday game at Swansea City.
James Tavernier – 20 year-old back from loan spell at MK Dons
James has gained a lot of experience over the last 14 months or so on loan at Gateshead (18), Carlisle United (17), Sheffield Wednesday (8) and MK Dons (6) where he has played a total of 49 games.
And when he returned from Sheffield Wednesday in February, James was very impressive in training, and manager Alan Pardew said he looked as good as current first choice right-back Danny Simpson.
It seems that Alan Pardew wants to have a look at the lad, and see how good Tavernier is, and we expect him to make some sub appearances over the last 7 games of the season.
And it could be that he could become the replacement for Danny Simpson next season, if the former Manchester United player refuses to sign his new deal before the summer, although we expect at least one new left-footed full-back to be drafted in the summer – probably Erik Pieters of PSV.
This is what James said on the Newcastle web-site today about his loan spell:
“It was very beneficial for me,” “It was another loan spell which allowed me to go out and play games, which is what I need, and I really enjoyed it.”
“A knee injury stopped me from playing a few games but I still enjoyed it and hopefully they can go on and get promotion.” “I hope they get to Wembley in the play-offs and go up.”
“I’d have loved to have had the chance to play at Wembley so it’s disappointing in some ways that I won’t be able to now, but it’s great being called back.”
“And now I might be involved in the last few games of the season for Newcastle, which is exciting. Hopefully that can happen but we’ll wait and see.”
And there has been a lot of nonsense written about the Pepe Reina – James Perch incident on Sunday, and we see a number of Liverpool’s current and former players have chipped in.
Liverpool full-back Glen Johnson tweeted this a couple of day ago:
“What have I just seen? Is Perch for real?! Joke,”
Was it also a joke that Reina butted James Perch and totally lost his control – it’s not James’ fault that Reina now misses three games and the semi-final against Everton, and we noticed there was no appeal of the red card made by Liverpool.
And why do these footballers get involved with these things – they are not supposed to comment on the incidents in games.
And former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore had this to say today:
“Not many suggesting punishments for diving, so is it now with us for good? I say give Carroll/Perch three game bans. They won’t do it again.”
Do what again for Perch?
James was head-butted by the Liverpool goalkeeper – we suppose he wanted James sent off and Pepe slapped on the back for head-butting Perch.
As we said earlier, there’s been some utter nonsense written since Sunday about that incident, after Newcastle walloped Liverpool 2-0 and were the better side and are now 11 points clear of Liverpool.
We know Liverpool fans and Liverpool players are not in the best of spirits at the moment – the side has lost six of their last seven league games – but they should look at their own players and not the opposition for where the problem lies.
Liverpool’s revival has to start with their players starting to step up to the plate, which they haven’t done this year in the league, having gained a paltry 8 points from their last 12 games, and 3 of those points were against a badly weakened Everton side.
And so as not to embarrass the Liverpool management, we are not even going to mention that Kenny Dalglish has spent close to £120M on new players in the last 15 months.

Comment #4The outcome was completely correct, pepe got red for violent conduct and james got yellow for making more of it than was needed. Why is this even a talking point. If james got red then the ref would have to have given carroll red too. Let’s not forget, pepe did actually headbutt perch. Carrol just dived to get a pen and the keeper sent off, no contact was made

Comment #6Bindippers and all associated with them just can’t take it that they are not even a top 6 side any more.
Collymore was done for battering his girlfriend(s) so he has a fair bit in common with Donkey.
Players tweeting against refs decisions ought to be done for bringing the game into disrepute.

Comment #7Hah! Collymore is no judge – he couldn’t possibly have been able to see the incident from where he was: In a park after sunset, upside down in the back of an astra with steamed up windows.

Comment #9the very crux of the issue, which gibbering idiots like Stan Collymore overlook, is that it’s necessary for players to throw themselves to the ground, however minor the violence, because if they don’t, the referee won’t enforce the law (violent conduct, which it still is even if you brush someone) and the offender will get off scott-free.
If players could trust the refs to uphold the law, they wouldn’t feel the need to exaggerate the contact.
That’s the root of the problem.

Obatoyou – if you are still on, or for anyone who is outside uk but want to access uk-resident only links, I used to watch episodes or trailers of 24( er I am sure it was that or Heroes!) on FOX usa in the uk by using one of those Proxy server programs – Hide IP I think was one – it basically allows you to use a server based in a different country from yours so if you choose a UK proxy server you can watch stuff like bbc online. I think proxy servers are the haunt of those looking for ‘other’ material so I always felt a bit shabby using it though ha ha!

Comment #11We did boss Liverpool, that’s agreed. Caroll was trying for a penalty. We did get some luck though. The incident with Danny Simpson on the line, is because the ball came off Williamson’s face, then Danny only had enough time to move his shoulder slightly. However his arm didn’t move as he was holding the post. That said, if Danny Simpson’s arm didn’t stop that goal going in, then Williamson would have scored an own goal to put Liverpool 1-0 up. So we can’t take anything for granted. It just so happens that once we’d had that bit of luck, we then went on to boss the game, and deserved to win by more than two goals.

Comment #12If he did not fall to the ground there is a chance the ref would not have seen it. Clubs have no faith in the FA and their whacky post game judgments so it’s up to them to make sure action is taken off the field.
Perch reacted the way every single player that gets head butted reacts. Sure he was barely touched and I believe he acknowleged this by getting up fairly quickly and getting on with it. At least he was not laying on the floor in pain for 2 minutes.

Comment #17Perch overplayed, but Reina butted him. At least he attemted, which is a red card. Maybe Reina would not have been shown off if Perch didn’t dive, as the ref could have thought there was no contact, that’s probably why Perch acted as he did.
I think, however that any attemt to fake injury, dives etc should be given a 1 match ban based on video evidence. Trying to trick the ref is nok ok and banning players that try to cheat would put an end to this behavior.

Comment #20It is a shame when players do that, like Tiote did a few games back when he was hardly touched. But it gets the ref to pay attention. If the player stays up, and it doesn’t look like the player’s been hurt, then it’s all to easy for the ref to try to get the game going. But with a player falling to the ground, and 50,000 fans shouting red, he doesn’t have any choice. James Perch did the right thing, in today’s footballing climate.
I’d even argue that Caroll did, given that when he went down there was players coming back to cover, and he’d taking it away from goal. However it was necky to do it in front of the home crowd, and even worse that he didn’t at least wait for contact.
Players have to respond to get the most out of the ref. Half the time a wrong call is made regarding a throw-in, corner, or offside, the opposition usually doesn’t make much of a call and doesn’t get it given.

Comment #22This is a non story.
Reina deserved red, Perch deserved yellow.
We had an exchange yesterday about using a fourth official like in Rugby with video evidence for confirming ref’s decisions on the pitch.
Should be used for ‘is it over the line’ type queries but might support player violence issues so guys don’t have to go down when the ref is unsighted

Comment #23Players should never assault anouther player no matter how bad or how much play acting is involved.fact is you cnt do it.now play acting and diving during play from a challenge is a different matter.bans should be handed out.

Comment #24@toonking i agree, we could have had a penalty, but they could have had two, in that handball, and Williamson climbing over someone (i can’t remember who). I’m not saying we didn’t deserve to win, we hammered them. But that did seem to be the turning point, as from then on we looked like the better team. Up until that moment it was fairly even (even though kenny is seeking some sympathy saying his team bossed first ten minutes)! We could have lost that match at that point, either by that going in, or the handball being spotted and having ten men and a pen to face, that’s all i’m saying.

Comment #29I am a little gutted that in the last ten minutes of the game (including stoppage) Liverpool had ten men and Enrique in goal, and we didn’t get a shot off.
If I was Pard’s I’d have been screaming at the team telling them to get one past Enrique, given the way he treated the club when he left.

Comment #30I was not able to watch the match live due to work. What really surprised me was perch. . . . . .I thought the lad was a very comfortable player.
It just goes to show, us bloggers, fans and armchair managers get it wrong more times than we get it right.
I think the current manager and training staff have done a tremendous job.
Perchy well done my son. You are one player l did not think would be around for long, mind you i thought that when Pardew took over.

Comment #33Retrospective punishment does my nut in too. Makes a mockery of the whole game.
For example, if somebody stamps on an opponent during the first-half, it’s missed by the officials, it’s a tight match, then the offenders team go onto win. The FA intervene days later, plodding into action by congregating around a table – piqued after media and fan’s uproar – deciding to ban the player, accepting he should have been sent off, therefore skewing the result, which is never acknowledged. The irony being, your average fan watching on TV and more irksome the fourth official on pitch-side monitors, can see the evidence on a replay only a few moments after the incident, where if deemed guilty, the match could be immediately stopped and it could be promptly dealt with.
Formula 1 have stewards, who after a shunt or other flash-point, immediately review and give a verdict, while the race is still going on.
ARGH! Rant over. 😆

Comment #36i think that yellow card punishment is the problem with these feigning injuries and diving along with other things such as swearing bad tackling etc.
yellow cards you could say is just a card given for that match because players know that as long as they don’t get a second in the same match and a total of 7 before they get cancelled then i don’t see them have any punishment.
the way the yellow card should be used is just like it is in rugby whereby a yellow card means you are sent off for a bit time. then players i think will be much more aware of there behavior.
of course there is still a good chance of controversy because managers will have arguments yellow cards being given when they should not have and vise versa
