In a great finish for Newcastle, in today’s FA Cup semi-final tie, Andy Carroll headed the winner for Liverpool after 86 minutes to put Newcastle into Europe.
Andy Carroll scores winner against Everton today
Oh yes, I almost forgot, and Liverpool reached the FA Cup final with their 2-1 win over Everton.
And over the 90 minutes Liverpool probably deserved to win the game although their defending at times was not good.
It hadn’t looked good for Liverpool in the first half , when Jamie Carragher had given away a terrible goal after just 23 minutes, when he dithered instead of thumping the ball away, and Jelavic hit the ball into the back of the net, and Liverpool were 1-0 down at the half.
But Liverpool were a much improved side in the second half, although Andy Carroll missed an absolute sitter from just five yards out on 47 minutes, when he somehow headed the ball wide.
He used to score those when he wore the black and white stripes of his home town club Newcastle.
But then it was former Newcastle center-back Sylvain Distin who made a terrible mistake for Everton, and his poor pass back was jumped on by Luiz Suarez, and he had the ball in the back of the net in a jiffy.
It was anybody’s game now, but then on 86 minutes, following a corner, it was that Geordie lad Andy Carroll, who back-headed the ball into the back of the net, to see Liverpool into their second cup final this year, and it was Andy’s second goal this week.
But much more importantly, it means that 6th place in the league will qualify for Europe, and Newcastle are currently 12 points ahead of 7th placed Everton.
While it’s still technically possible for Everton to catch Newcastle, we will go a long way to making that almost impossible, with a win against Stoke next Saturday.
We need just 4 more points in our last 5 games to make 100% sure, but that also assumes Everton will win every one of their remaining games.
We’re in Europe next season – believe me – and it’s unbelievable.
Now let’s see if we can make it the Champions League!
Howay The Lads!!

Comment #8It is a bit bizarre that carroll has actually made sure we have qualified for europe, both in the fact he has been sh1t all year, the fact that we have built a complete team with his transfer money and now he scores a goal that has assured us of europa. What a guy.

Comment #14I can’t even express how much of a MASSIVE win that is to put us in Europe.
We will keep all our best players, buy some better ones, and live the dream. I really hope this fires Ashley us to spend some cash as he get’s a chance to really promote his brand. We may even get a really good stadium sponsor. I’m sure Virgin are loving it too!!!
Now the pressure is off, we can relax and play our football and have a shot at the Champions league!!!

Comment #15Come to think of it.
It was not 2 but 3 former Nufc players who pretty much gaurenteed us Europe tonight.
Distin, Carroll and Bellamy.
Still puzzled on how Enrique didn’t start.

Comment #24If Chelsea win the CL, then the 4th in the league will NOT get CL, but Europa.
But 4th and 5th will get Europa and, if Chelsea win CL but are 4th/5th, then 6th gets Europa.
I think Europa for us is almost certain . . . .unless
we get CL ! ! ! !
Let’s go for it.

Comment #33Sorry for the repost from the last thread.
Lads can someone just clarify something for me? We could need four more points before the end of the season to guarantee being in the Europa League, don’t we? I’m not being a negger, there’s no way we won’t get the points we need, but that is the situation isn’t it? Everton are 12 points behind us with 5 to play = 15 points to play for, so conceivably they could win all their games, and get the points, meaning we might need a few more points to guarantee it.

Comment #36Not sounding like a negger but let’s not bump our gums just yet it’s not mathematically done yet we could still finish 8th if disastrous things happen obviously hopefully not but les not count our chickens before they hatch.

Comment #37@Ryan: Mathematically yeah, if we lose all our games and Everton win all of their games it’s definitely possible. Nobody is counting their chickens yet, it’s just about opening up fifth spot for us. It’s up to us to finish their (or higher) now.

Thanks for that, mate. I thought that was the case, like I said I can’t see us not picking up another 4 points before the end of the season, the way we’re playing, and if Cisse keeps banging them in!
