There has been news last week that Newcastle are looking at some strikers, in case we lose Demba Ba in the summer to his home-town club PSG.
Bas Dost – Dutch top scorer this season
One of the players the local papers have mentioned Newcastle are interested in, is Bas Dost (what a name!) of Dutch club Heerenveen.
Dost will turn 23 on May 31st, and he joined Heerenveen from Heracles Almelo in the summer of 2010, for a fee reported to be €3.1M, which is around £2.6M, and he signed a five year deal.
In the last two seasons at Heerenveen, he has played 68 times for the Dutch club and scored 45 goals, and he stands 6’5″ tall.
This is the first time Newcastle have been linked with the striker, and it’s thought that he could be brought to Tyneside for around £5M, if the reports are to be believed.
Marco Van Basten will become the Heerenveen manager in the summer, and he would like to keep the star striker, and confidants of Van Basten are said to have told the Daily Mirror:
“He is planning to talk with Dost and his representatives and wants him to stay. He is already putting his squad together for next season and he will make it a priority to keep Dost.”
Apparently Aston Villa are interested in the striker, but why he would be interested in Villa, who have plunged down the Premier League this season under new manager Alex McLeish – we have no idea.
Aston Villa are currently 6th bottom of the league, a full 7 points behind 7th bottom Stoke City, and of course Alex was the manager who took Birmingham down last season, before he jumped ship.
Yes, you’re right, we are not really big fans of Alex McLeish.
This is what Bas Dost said when told of interest from Aston Villa:
“It is positive news. You hear this and of course it is nice to know they are interested. Aston Villa is a club I don’t know very well, but they look good.”
“I have spoken with my agent and we won’t be discussing anything during the season.”
With Liverpool beating Everton today in the semi-final of the FA Cup, with the winner coming from Geordie Andy Carroll, it’s almost a cast-iron certainty that Newcastle will be in the Europa League next season.
And that will help us big time, to attract the five players Alan Pardew says he’ll bring in, if we get into Europe next season.
We are 12 points above 7th placed Everton with 15 points to play for, so if we win our next game and Everton only draw or lose, or if we draw and Everton lose, we will have mathematically have qualified for the Europe League.
So it’s important that we beat Stoke City a week today.
We’re not sure if Bas Dost would be good enough for Newcastle, but we’d be much happier if Demba Ba stays at Newcastle for next season, although he has said recently that it’s his ambition to play for his home town team PSG at some point in the future.
But he’s happy at the moment at Newcastle.
We hope Demba Ba will sign a new deal at Newcastle before the summer rolls around, so that if he is sold, at least Newcastle will get the market price for him, which is probably around £20M at least, and PSG have plenty of money available in the summer.
Currently Newcastle would get around £3M if somebody comes in for the Senegal striker, and pays the release price for him, which is said to be around £7M, but Ba himself gets about half of that.
What do you think about this?

Comment #5Just to clarify: provided the current top 6 are the top 6 at the end of the season, they all get Europe one way or another?
The only way that would change is if Everton make 6th?
Got my ticket for the Stoke game, hope we give them a drubbing! A win will really put the cat amongst the pigeons and make people take us seriously, considering we would then be 3 points ahead of spurs for a few hours at least!

Comment #6Can see why we’re after him, he’s a dutch Demba Ba really. Same type player, a bit skinnier, but he’ll be beefed up for the PL should we get him.
Also a fantastic finish on him, aswell as a top target man.
Similar to Giroud aswell.

How many did we sign last Summer?
Marv
Abied
Cabaye
Obertan
Ba
Santon
Any more? 6 signings didn’t throw our team off it

Comment #13He looks to be a great player. Regardless of whether Demba Ba leaves or not, Lovenkrands, Ranger, and probably Leon Best probably are. A boost in quality is needed to go further in competitions. Let’s remember, we’ve had an amazing season, but not got to the final in anything, or close to winning the league. For that price linked we would probably be able to afford him if you combine the price of Leon Best, and Ranger the outlay isn’t too much. Then if you bring in a replacement for Lovenkrands, we have plenty strikers itching to score goals, especially with our current top two likely to be away with Africa Cup of Nations.

Comment #15Guys, has nobody thought about this? If somebody comes in and bids for the release clause, why don’t we offer him for £6 million so we get the whole fee?
Is that not the easy way round IF ifs true he has a release clause?!
Damage limitation!

Comment #19Was an extremely strange feeling today when Liverpool scored the winner as I can’t stand Liverpool but the relief of knowing we’ve made Europe! Amazing Ive read so many fan on here say it but I’ll say it again, I’ve haven’t felt this proud about the toon in a long time!
How much do people think are budget is in the summer assuming Europa league is what we get or even champions league? I expect we’ll get a mixture of frees but I think we’ll have some cisse esk signings..
