There has been news last week that Newcastle are looking at some strikers, in case we lose Demba Ba in the summer to his home-town club PSG.
Bas Dost – Dutch top scorer this season
One of the players the local papers have mentioned Newcastle are interested in, is Bas Dost (what a name!) of Dutch club Heerenveen.
Dost will turn 23 on May 31st, and he joined Heerenveen from Heracles Almelo in the summer of 2010, for a fee reported to be €3.1M, which is around £2.6M, and he signed a five year deal.
In the last two seasons at Heerenveen, he has played 68 times for the Dutch club and scored 45 goals, and he stands 6’5″ tall.
This is the first time Newcastle have been linked with the striker, and it’s thought that he could be brought to Tyneside for around £5M, if the reports are to be believed.
Marco Van Basten will become the Heerenveen manager in the summer, and he would like to keep the star striker, and confidants of Van Basten are said to have told the Daily Mirror:
“He is planning to talk with Dost and his representatives and wants him to stay. He is already putting his squad together for next season and he will make it a priority to keep Dost.”
Apparently Aston Villa are interested in the striker, but why he would be interested in Villa, who have plunged down the Premier League this season under new manager Alex McLeish – we have no idea.
Aston Villa are currently 6th bottom of the league, a full 7 points behind 7th bottom Stoke City, and of course Alex was the manager who took Birmingham down last season, before he jumped ship.
Yes, you’re right, we are not really big fans of Alex McLeish.
This is what Bas Dost said when told of interest from Aston Villa:
“It is positive news. You hear this and of course it is nice to know they are interested. Aston Villa is a club I don’t know very well, but they look good.”
“I have spoken with my agent and we won’t be discussing anything during the season.”
With Liverpool beating Everton today in the semi-final of the FA Cup, with the winner coming from Geordie Andy Carroll, it’s almost a cast-iron certainty that Newcastle will be in the Europa League next season.
And that will help us big time, to attract the five players Alan Pardew says he’ll bring in, if we get into Europe next season.
We are 12 points above 7th placed Everton with 15 points to play for, so if we win our next game and Everton only draw or lose, or if we draw and Everton lose, we will have mathematically have qualified for the Europe League.
So it’s important that we beat Stoke City a week today.
We’re not sure if Bas Dost would be good enough for Newcastle, but we’d be much happier if Demba Ba stays at Newcastle for next season, although he has said recently that it’s his ambition to play for his home town team PSG at some point in the future.
But he’s happy at the moment at Newcastle.
We hope Demba Ba will sign a new deal at Newcastle before the summer rolls around, so that if he is sold, at least Newcastle will get the market price for him, which is probably around £20M at least, and PSG have plenty of money available in the summer.
Currently Newcastle would get around £3M if somebody comes in for the Senegal striker, and pays the release price for him, which is said to be around £7M, but Ba himself gets about half of that.
What do you think about this?
Comments welcome.

Comment #43Bas Dost would be a good signing , great in the air and a powerful shot .
I would also hope we are considering his team mate, Assaidi , who would also be an excellent signing, very fast and goes past players with ease.

Comment #48Bit cautious – anyone remember Alves for Middlesbrough who was signed from Heerenveen?
Having said that, right now I trust the judgement of the board and our coaching/scouting staff, so if we lose Ba and sign this Bost guy up then I’ll trust the decision until/unless proven otherwise.
Having said that, hope we keep Demba Ba, if we get champions league then I think we will

Comment #49And keep Shola – Shola may not be the best player but we saw especially against Sunderland that he has much more passion for the club than many other players, including the expensive Luque and Michael “ligament gone” Owen. I’ve always said I’d much rather have a player fully committed to the club who gives effort every time than a player with a lot of ability but who is not prepared to put his body in the firing line. That is why we should give new deals to Simpson, Perch and Guthrie.

Comment #50All the heart break and agony these past 8 years have finally been healed. Doesn’t matter if we qualify champions league or not to me we are back in Europe where we belong. I have been a Newcastle supporter since 2004 when I was a 20 year old pup fighting for my life in Iraq. It has been mostly pain but today it has been made good on the investment. Don’t get me wrong champions league would be amazing for our club and could really push us into top 4 with money and publicity but either way I am a proud and satisfied supporter today. Howay the lads… thanks to the silver fox, master of the fist pump, sir Alan pardew, forever a Geordie and Geordie legend after the work he has done to bring our club back to its rightful place. Also thank you to Mike Ashley, been some mistakes made by the big man, but also mistakes from the supporters in not trusting and supporting him. All of that is gone, he has financially saved our club and we are on the up and up because of Mr Ashley. Great day to be in the toon army. Howay the lads

Comment #51And Ps, Carroll has not been the same player at Liverpool cuz his heart hasn’t been in it. I’m sure his life has been miserable because he has not been welcomed in his hometown and honestly he is still a kid with a lot of potential. If we could get him at ten mil and he would appoligise I would take him back in a heart beat, would be a good player to have in certain games in Europe next year and if he came back to form like I think he would on tyneside would be a steal

And yet they still demand yellow cards for any foul that occurs…..

Comment #56http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2129875/Chelsea-chasing-15m-keeper-Krul-replace-Cech-season.html
lol the Daily Fail is getting desperate now, they’re following the floppy-face tactic of trying to create any sort of BS rumour to detract from the Toon’s great season.
Chelsea want to watch their backs: if we nick 4th place we will need Mata and Sturridge to strengthen our attack. (That’s just as rediculous as Krul to Chelsea for £15M, but I bet the Daily Fail wouldn’t dream up that particular fairytale, even though it’s just as likely!)

I just read that article, and it’s as good as any ammount of bull that’ll come out in the silly season.
They already know that Chelsea will offer him a £90.000 wage packet.
I think they know more than Krul does to put it like that, lol.
If u don’t have proper news to put out, why put it out at all…

Reserves: Harper, R.Taylor, Ferguson, Williamson, Simpson, Abeid, Sammy Ameobi, Best, Shola Ameobi, (plus several new young players coming into the development squad and pushing for a 1st team place).
What do you guys reckon? This is a very realistic suggestion of our squad for next season, IMO.

Comment #61Expect tons more shoddy reporting from the bogrags before the seasons out. When spuds choke and chelski`s aged stars of a bygone era are disposed of and abramovich gives up the ghost and sets sail on his yacht to buy a different club, the so-called big names will be clamouring to board a progressive boat in the shape of NUFC. When, not if, we qualify for CL, we may find that there are very few players willing to jump this particular ship. It`ll take money to tempt the likes of ba away, and if they want it,they can take it, and i hope they are as successful as our red-shirted turncoats.

Comment #65Just went onto the nufc official website and was horrified to see there are still 38 whole tickets left on sale for the Stoke game! Talk about lack of support! I tell you.
Look at the mackems today: they had 37,000 attendance at 3pm on a saturday, that’s about 74% capacity!
They know how to support their team… oh wait no they don’t!

Comment #66I don’t think Demba Ba will leave for another prem club. He may leave for PSG, but nothing has come out of PSG to suggest that yet, so it’s just worries at the minute. Hopefully he’ll bag a couple next saturday against Stoke, and silence those rumours, and he’ll sign his new deal.

Comment #69Chelsea won’t sign Krul that’s ridiculous. He’s on fire at Newcastle, number one keeper for a 50,000+ every game team. Why would he want to go and try to fight it out with Cech, in a team that might not even finish above us.

Comment #70no chance chelsea will go for krul! Courtois at athletico madrid is having the same season in spain as krul is england, looks a fine goalkeeper! they paid alot for him too, if anything he’ll be brought in to compete with cech! Only viable link i can see for Krul is spurs who i cant see paying that much for a keeper!

Comment #71not really a fan of Dost, can’t see him adapting too well to the premier league! Much prefer de jong! Think giroud may have a big euro championships in the summer! 1 player to look out for is the next german sensastion Marco Reus! Already signed for dortmund but hes gonna be a huge star!

Comment #73Why would Ba sign on at NUFC so we (ie. Mashley) can earn an extra 14 million for him. If he doesn’t, he can sign for PSG for a massive Owenesque contract and given his exemplary performance for us AND his reputed dodgy knee (ticking timebomb?) who could blame the lad for securing his future as best he can?
But all this speculation is predicated on the possibility he may leave. He may also decide to stay on Tyneside for our Champions League adventure.

Comment #74Have to be careful in the dutch market…goals doesnt mean a good player.
Look at that guy that Boro spent 12mill on!
Then again, Herenveen is the club that gave us a look at a young huntelaar, that Roeder was to blind to see what a talent he was (even though he ripped us apart!).

Comment #75I’m getting bored of hearing about Demba Ba transfer nonsense. The only club that would interest him out of the clubs linked is PSG. He was the focal point of our attacks for much of the season, which helped his goal tally also. I don’t think we’d be lost without Demba Ba, nor any other one player. Andy Caroll, our top goalscorer at the time, a fine example. I hope he stays because he’s a great player and works hard, but there’s plenty of other players with quality who’d like to play in front of a full stadium at Newcastle.

krul will stay
sign this kid – he’ll be great asset for the future and also i believe he’ll live forever!
sign Berbatov as a squad player (we’ll need another goal shark for europe)
sign Hoillett
sign Farfan
with those two in the squad we’ll have some great wide players and a plethora of attacking options n real squad depth
sign Alan Dzagoev (from cska – hes out of contract soon and what a talent!!)
sign Diame
sign Pieters and Douglas
and a few younger CB’s and FB’s for depth
some other players coming out of contract to think about:
Bosingwa
Pienaar
Bassong
Drenthe
Taiwo
Kalou
Montolivo (fiorentina midfielder)
Flamini
Aissati

Comment #77If you look at Bas Dost’s goals this season they are all tap ins and penalty kicks. Nothing impressive aside from one overhead kick I believe.
Also, remember Jon Dahl Tomasson? Dalglish signed him when he was the top scorer in the Dutch league… he absolutely flopped in the premiership. Don’t make that same mistake Pardew.
I would like to see Sigurrdson, Mata and a quality striker if we’re wanting to get far next season. Ba will probably leave sometime soon and even if he doesn’t, our bench is extremely lacking in scoring options. Shola and Best don’t cut it.

Comment #78Cant believe how many times i’ve seen Berbatov mentioned…
The success this season has been built on a team that is hard working, hungry and coming into their prime.
Berbatov is the opposite to all of that.

Comment #79All these articles about the possibility of Ba leaving couldn’t be pissing me off more! Ba came out last week and said he was happy, so take his word for it, god….! Whilst Bas Dost’s goal scoring record is impressive I’d have other targets over him, the Eredivisie isn’t that impressive a league to be scoring in…Reports say that Villa are putting in a £7mil offer in for him, personally I think that’s the maximum I’d pay for a player like Dost.
