There has been news last week that Newcastle are looking at some strikers, in case we lose Demba Ba in the summer to his home-town club PSG.
Bas Dost – Dutch top scorer this season
One of the players the local papers have mentioned Newcastle are interested in, is Bas Dost (what a name!) of Dutch club Heerenveen.
Dost will turn 23 on May 31st, and he joined Heerenveen from Heracles Almelo in the summer of 2010, for a fee reported to be €3.1M, which is around £2.6M, and he signed a five year deal.
In the last two seasons at Heerenveen, he has played 68 times for the Dutch club and scored 45 goals, and he stands 6’5″ tall.
This is the first time Newcastle have been linked with the striker, and it’s thought that he could be brought to Tyneside for around £5M, if the reports are to be believed.
Marco Van Basten will become the Heerenveen manager in the summer, and he would like to keep the star striker, and confidants of Van Basten are said to have told the Daily Mirror:
“He is planning to talk with Dost and his representatives and wants him to stay. He is already putting his squad together for next season and he will make it a priority to keep Dost.”
Apparently Aston Villa are interested in the striker, but why he would be interested in Villa, who have plunged down the Premier League this season under new manager Alex McLeish – we have no idea.
Aston Villa are currently 6th bottom of the league, a full 7 points behind 7th bottom Stoke City, and of course Alex was the manager who took Birmingham down last season, before he jumped ship.
Yes, you’re right, we are not really big fans of Alex McLeish.
This is what Bas Dost said when told of interest from Aston Villa:
“It is positive news. You hear this and of course it is nice to know they are interested. Aston Villa is a club I don’t know very well, but they look good.”
“I have spoken with my agent and we won’t be discussing anything during the season.”
With Liverpool beating Everton today in the semi-final of the FA Cup, with the winner coming from Geordie Andy Carroll, it’s almost a cast-iron certainty that Newcastle will be in the Europa League next season.
And that will help us big time, to attract the five players Alan Pardew says he’ll bring in, if we get into Europe next season.
We are 12 points above 7th placed Everton with 15 points to play for, so if we win our next game and Everton only draw or lose, or if we draw and Everton lose, we will have mathematically have qualified for the Europe League.
So it’s important that we beat Stoke City a week today.
We’re not sure if Bas Dost would be good enough for Newcastle, but we’d be much happier if Demba Ba stays at Newcastle for next season, although he has said recently that it’s his ambition to play for his home town team PSG at some point in the future.
But he’s happy at the moment at Newcastle.
We hope Demba Ba will sign a new deal at Newcastle before the summer rolls around, so that if he is sold, at least Newcastle will get the market price for him, which is probably around £20M at least, and PSG have plenty of money available in the summer.
Currently Newcastle would get around £3M if somebody comes in for the Senegal striker, and pays the release price for him, which is said to be around £7M, but Ba himself gets about half of that.
What do you think about this?
Comments welcome.

Comment #81Not really tempted by him, al his goals seem to be tap ins and why buy another CF? It would just encourage more 4-4-2 which is simply not as effective (and exciting) as when we play 4-3-3 with the star trio up top. If we buy any forwards then surely it needs to be a fast, tricky type player who can spot a pass for the left (basically I just want 2 Ben Arfas!)

Comment #90If Johnson is from easington then he is a ‘yacker’ or ‘pit-yacker’. Can be scum or mag. SBR was from houghton-le-spring wasn’t he? Same sort of divide.

Comment #91Btw, berbatov keeps getting a mention but no idea why anyone thinks it would be a good idea. Too old, no doubt costlier than MA will pay for and would expect to start at what he would consider a smaller club. NUFC and his ethos aren’t compatible. And did I see Del Piero? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
Ha.

preaching to the converted about Berbatov (i look back at the list i posted @76 he’s the only player that looks out of place). Anyone who’s seen him play for manure knows that he is laconic and in no way shape or form defensive minded – however, when he’s on he can carve up the best defences. Yes he’s a precocious talent, but so was HBA when he arrived Tyneside and he seems far from those days now.Maybe Pards could teach an old dog new tricks – imo he’s presenting as by far the best man manager in the premier league.
I really believe if you want to challenge on all fronts (european and domestic cups and premier league) you don’t just need squad depth but you need players with good experience on all these fronts. Berba in all likelyhood will have his contract extended by manure, but he’d have a part to play at nufc – he knows he’s too old to start too many games during the season, so use him in the cups and europe and you’ve got yourself what could be a very cheap and proven goalscorer.
I like all the names being bandied about as potential transfer targets, its exciting. But how many more players with continental experience only can we fill the squad with. I’d like to see a good mixture of young and old, local and domestic and some continental class. If we offload just a few of the bit-parters and seat warmers (lovenkrands, ranger, maybe best and a few others) we’ll have a good amount of cash to part with, and with the current nufc transfer policy we can actually build a large and strong squad that will mount some very serious challenges next year.
These are exciting days. HWTL

Good shout about Dorst,s team-mate!
Dorst i would,nt sign but Aissidi ! i would definitely make a move for~!
Thing is though as soon as we show an interest in any player then the rest of the Prem league are suddenly all chasing him for his signature~!
So any interest in Aissidi or anyone else i would keep to yourself if i was you!!!
