It has to stop sometime – that top clubs come in for Newcastle’s best players – and expect to get them.
Tim Krul – in great form for Newcastle this season
News this Sunday (readers beware) that Chelsea are after Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul this summer, but it’s not the first time Tim has been linked with Chelsea, and Tottenham have also been credited with an interested for the Dutchman.
There are fears that Newcastle top striker Demba Ba, who has 16 goals for Newcastle this season and came as a a free agent last summer, may also leave for his home town club Paris Saint Germain.
We suppose it’s only natural that clubs want our players, because Newcastle have so over achieved this season, currently being in 5th position in the league table and 2 points above big spenders Chelsea.
The news is that Chelsea will come in with a £15M offer for Tim, whose two ambitions in football are to be the Newcastle number one, and the Dutch number one goalkeeper.
He has achieved his first goal this season, and has already played a couple of times for Holland, and he has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League this season at only 23, which is young for a goalkeeper.
The news is that there is the lure of Champions League Football at Chelsea – really?
Chelsea will need to finish in 4th place to achieve that, or to win the Champions League this season, with the London team to meet Barcelona in the first leg at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
Newcastle are currently one point away from being 4th top in the league, and have an outside chance of making the Champions League this season, as Newcastle already seem to be 99% certain to be in the Europa League next term.
Liverpool beat Everton yesterday to reach the FA Cup Final, and that means 6th place in the league table will get a Europa League position with Liverpool having already qualified by winning the Carling Cup.
Newcastle are 12 points ahead of Everton with 15 points to play for, so 4 points will guarantee Newcastle 5th place in the league in the final 5 games of the season.
So there may have to be some other reasons for Newcastle players to want to join other clubs, than for the lure of European competition. 😀
There are supposed to be growing concerns at Chelsea over the form of Petr Cech, according to the Sunday Mail, but this could just be paper talk, and it is Sunday, after all.
Cech has been one of Chelsea’s best performing players lately.
If some club comes in with the right money for Krul, Newcastle could be tempted to sell, but it would have to be an awful lot more than £15M for Mike Ashley to sell the top Dutchman, and Tim has always said he is happy on Tyneside.
What do you think?

Comment #2No guarantee CL footy with Chelski. I wouldn’t be surprised if Abramovich tires of his toy and offloads it in the next few years. Krul will switch for cold hard cash.

Comment #5If Tim does leave (really hope he doesn’t..) we should go after Vorm from Swansea. 🙂

Comment #6I think you’ll find clubs (particularly big ones) will find ways around the financial fair play rules.
e.g. Man City’s £300m stadium sponsorship deal…? very suspicious, but the review just ‘fizzled out’ and we never heard anymore on the matter.

Comment #8Alright if we could keep timmy and have vorm. Would he play in tandem with krul if we had all those euro and cup games to play for? Tim won’t last a season playing all of them.

Can’t see us having both. The two of them are currently fighting it out for the reserve keeper spot, with Vorm being ahead (for reason’s I don’t understand…)
On top of that Vorm would cost a few million, which I think is a waste of money if he is only going to sit on the bench.

Comment #13More gutter press diatribe! Have they got one of our signings right yet?
I really think Ba will stay, now Europe is on the cards, playing alongside his countryman. I think this nonsense about him being unhappy is rubbish, he’s just frustrated because he’s going through a baron spell, happens to all great strikers – Shearer had plenty.
Don’t forget Ba almost single handedly kept us in the top 6 first half of the season – he had a large part to play in us getting into Europe.
No player is unreplacable, but I really do hope he stays and accepts a contract soon. It would be a huge boost for the remaining games – just like Krul and Collo.
As for the Krul rumour – absolute nonsense an lazy journalism, he loves the toon and we’re an up and coming team.

Comment #1415M for a goalkeeper is good money.
I like Krul he’s very good.
12 months ago it was a three way fight between, Krul, Forster & Harper, for the No1 shirt.
Forster must be a decent keeper.
I wouldn’t want Krul to go but if 15M is the starting bid …

Comment #15I bet Ashley wouldn’t even blink until the bidding hit £25M-£30M. And it won’t, not this summer at least.
Krul won’t be going anywhere.

Comment #17Hatem, not gud money for krul at all, the kid is class, and worth more, and he is on a new 5 year contract so there is no reason to sell, please stop implying selling our best players is gud business, any sale is detrimental to the development of the team, full stop.

Comment #19This is just made up. Chelsea have Cech, a great keeper. Tim Krul is having a great season here, and has grown here into a great player. He’s number one at Newcastle, in front of 50,000. How big is Chelsea’s stadium?

Comment #20I really can’t see Krul leaving, what incentive is there? He loves playing for Newcastle and only recently signed an extended contract.
Ashley is a great businessman, so if Krul did want to leave then the buyer would have to pay at least £25m, which we could use to buy a new keeper and stick Harper in the net in the mean time (and let’s be honest, Harper is still a great keeper).
However, I truly think that unless Barcelona, Madrid or maybe Man United came knocking, Krul would not want to leave Newcastle.

Comment #24Lee Dodd is right. Another load of made-up media crap from the Mail on Sunday. Why should Krul go to Chelsea or anywhere else. He will get European football with us playing infront of 52,000 minimum.
Are Enrique and Carroll in 8th position playing before home crowds of 45,362 any better off? And Chelsea offering only a 5th place at present in front of only 41,837, Spurs tie 4th us with home gates of only 36,310? It is time that these biased and dim witted media pundits recognised that NUFC with 52,000 gates and on the way to Europe are a BIG club who can offer more than the over-estimated so-called “big boys” (two of whom are below us in the league) to Krul than most.
It remains to be seen whether Ashley will be tempted to fill his cash bag with a fee for Krul though. Hope not.
What happens if greed wins and Krul goes to Chelsea?
Time we considered the future of Forster – an able replacement for our Tim already on the books and who has European experience already with Celtic. With the scenario of Europe beckoning I think we need both Krul, Forster, and the up and coming Jake Alnwick.

Comment #25Check the Toastie – any sale is detrimental to the development of the team, full stop.
Thats not true. Right now I’d sell Ranger, Xisco, Lovenkrands, and Smith and It would not affect the team at all.
Selling Nolan, Barton, Enrique, Carroll…none of us really though they were big steps forward but often letting someone go and getting the cash in can allow another player we have to step up or gives us the option of putting out scouting network to work and getting a good buy.

Comment #26Getting Rid of Xisco Smith Etc would free up what £150 Grand per week so that would be the wages for 2 Quality players . Keep what we have and get at least 5 new players. 2 Defenders 2 in midfield and another Ciss’e … Cant wait for the stoke game… Steve Harpr and Peter Lovenkrands I think will Retire But Would Like to see them at Newcastle as Coaches..

Comment #28I don’t think you are being very realistic, Ed. This is a direct result of the policy Mashley is operating. While there has to be a market value for every player, the hierarchy at this club – well, that is, Llambias – are openly advertising our squad for sale. You know and I know it, so don’t be surprised if Tim goes. Its a good price for a goalkeeper and he’ll triple his wages at the stroke of a pen.
Whether this is a policy whereby we can actually win anything is another matter, but it looks like it is quite low on the agenda, despite the successful season we are having.
As long as Carr keeps pulling rabbits out of the hat, it shouldn’t matter too badly. But I can’t help feeling he has to pick a couple of duds sooner or later and we’ll slide back down a snake.
