Newcastle United are in 20th place in the top 30 football clubs based on the estimated value of their brand or name.
The rankings are put together by Brand-Finance, which is the world’s leading brand valuation consultancy firm.
Brand-Finance have estimated the brand value of various football clubs around the world, and they have also given each brand a rating.
Manchester United are top of the list with a brand value estimated at $853M and a brand rating of AAA+.
In contrast, Newcastle are in 20th place with a brand value $86M and a brand rating of BB, and we were not even in the top 30 in 2011 – so we are moving back up.
However, back in 2010 we were listed in 23rd place with a brand value of $63M and a brand rating of BB+, so since 2010 we’ve at least gone up by around $23M in brand value.
When Mike Ashley bought Newcastle five years ago, he talked about increasing the brand awareness around the world of Newcastle United.
In 2009, when we were relegated, we are were in 17th place, so the good news is that we are getting back into being among the top football clubs, and we would expect next year both our brand value and brand rating would improve.
In this year’s table Real Madrid have dropped from second place to third place, and Bayern Munich have moved up to second place, with a brand value of $786M and an AAA rating.
Barcelona have dropped from 3rd place to 4th place.
Brand value is important in that it measures the perceived value of a football club, and how important the therefore is world-wide.
And since one of the major reasons buyers didn’t come flocking to buy Newcastle United when it was put up for sale three years ago, was a low world-wide brand name, moving up this table in the coming years will see Newcastle be better known around the world.
That sounds good.
In the list there are 12 English clubs, 4 German clubs, 3 Italian clubs, two each from France and Spain, and one from Holland.
Here is the table for 2012, and you can see the full details with last year’s placings and the like HERE.
Club | Matches | Goal Diff. | Points | |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Man City | 38 | 61 | 89 |
2 | Arsenal | 38 | 45 | 84 |
3 | Man United | 38 | 15 | 75 |
4 | Newcastle | 38 | 35 | 71 |
5 | Liverpool | 38 | 28 | 67 |
6 | Brighton | 38 | 19 | 62 |
7 | Aston Villa | 38 | 5 | 61 |

Comment #5Villa are still reaping the rewards of having that midfield maestro Lee Hendrie in their team, who could forget him!? A cut above.

Comment #6He’s been gone nearly a decade and yet the football world has yet to recover to the same class. Kids from Botswana, to Indonesi, to Colombia, all round the globe kids wanted to be Lee Hendrie!

Comment #9Yeah Villa seems a funny one. I dont think anyone would go to Villa because it’s a famous, big or well known club. I mean they are those things but not when compared to most of that others on that list.

Comment #11I suppose until recently, they were a bit of an “everton” type team, that were constantly knocking on the big boys door. But to be on this list i do find baffling…..I’m almost shocked we’re on it tbh.
Look forward to climbing up this table as well as the Premier League over the coming seasons!

Comment #14Beardo…That would all depend. The only information I have is that you want to pretend to be Peter Beardsley, who lets face it, couldn’t get a job modelling for the Sunderland Fans Association. Am I to assume in reality you’re less or more attractive than the great man that is Peter Beardsley?

Comment #15Man City alone have spent more than $300m in squad and club development since 2008 and yet their brand value is just $302m. lol

Comment #16It would be interesting to see where Man City were on the list before all of their big expenditure. I would think their world branding will only increase over the years…already seeing more light blue tops, I suppose it makes a change from the constant sea of red ones

Comment #17See Spurs have been linked to Ba and Krul again. Redknapp might as well take Tiote and Cabaye while he is there. When Modric and Bale where linked with moves he b1tched like a big spoilt brat. Hopefully he gets a taste of his own medicine when CL clubs come in for Bale, VDV and Modric.

Comment #18Surely Leeds, Forrest, Burnley, Celtic, Rangers, Athletico Madrid, Valencia, PSG, PSV, CSKA Moscow, LA Galaxy and a lot more to boot are bigger brands than Villa.
All though saying that I know they have sold a lot of Heskey 10 shirts in Outer Mongolia.

Comment #22I’m deeply offended that you’re still not convinced I’m Peter Beardsley, and the sorrow you have caused with your ‘couldn’t get a job modelling for Sunderland Fans Association’ is irreversible.
I’m distraught now you meanie!

Comment #25Beardo…Surely you haven’t convinced yourself that your Beardsley? The lies haven’t even been very good.
Beardsley has many wonderful talents, modelling is not one of them and I’m sure he’s well aware of it.
If you have managed to convince yourself of this new identity, then I do apologise for any offense taken by you, as the insult was not actually directed at you, “Beardo” 🙂

Beardo….Hate’s a bit of a strong word, no? I give you my word, I’d love nothing more to see an interview pop up with Beardsley, Fryers, Gameiro all holding up the new signings shirts and for Beardsley to say “Hey bloggers of nufcblog.com…you’re a bunch of meanies!”
I’d love it! x

Comment #35SupaToon…..I’m not going to comment on whether we should or not be above them, as generally I can be biased 🙂
However, how the hell are they in the top 20 at all? Or even close? Beattie gave a list of some that surely should be higher (not all mind)
