Newcastle Lead The Race To Sign Top Dutch Play-Maker

Newcastle United have been alerted to the availability of Barcelona play-maker Ibrahim Afellay, the 26 year-old Dutch International who is of Moroccan descent.

Ibrahim Afellay – available for £6M from Barcelona

And it seems as if Barcelona are not asking the earth for this 5’11” tall player, with £6M said to be the asking price.

Afellay played eight seasons for Ajax before joining Barca back in January of 2011, but he sustained a horrific knee injury while at Barcelona, and missed much of last season, only appearing five times for the Spanish club.

In his first partial season at Barca, he played 16 times with one goal for the club that has been European Champions three times in the last seven seasons.

While at Ajax,  Afellay played 217 times with 38 goals and is an excellent player, who has represented his country 36 times with three goals, and he is currently with the Holland squad preparing for the Euro 2012 Championships to start next month.

Ibrahim is a fixture of the Dutch national team, and he made the Dutch squads for the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament in Switzerland and Austria, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, when Holland were beaten 1-0 in extra time by Spain.

The play-maker however, has a history of injuries throughout his career, and Barcelona only paid £2.3M for him 18 months ago, so they would be making a profit on the player if they sell him for £6M.

It is also expected that Afellay will see some playing time for Holland in the upcoming European Championships in Poland and the Ukraine, and he will be put in the shop window by the former European Champions.

Tottenham and Arsenal are other clubs said to be interested, and Arsenal can offer the player Champions League football  next season, and both Newcastle and Tottenham can offer him the Europa League.

Newcastle are reported to be leading the race for the player, and they can certainly afford the £6M for a player this good.

Metro is reporting that Newcastle have around £20M to spend in the transfer market this summer, although whether they could afford his wages, said to be close to £80K/week, is another good question.

It will say something of Newcastle’s ambitions if the Tyneside club are successful in bringing this very skillful player to Newcastle.

We certainly hope they can.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

    Robinio,
Nobody was sold last transfer window and a top striker brought in although a CB should have been bought,so although I’mfond of a bit of Ashley bashing myself don’t you think we should be talking up the positives of whats happening atm.

No not yet but nothing to say he wont have far more medals and accolades than us within the next 10 years and that he contributed a lot to getting them which would mean he was worth a lot of money

you clearly can’t read accounts……just stop making up lies due to your lack of intelligence in finances.

there is a difference between losses and operating profit….not as simple as ashley taking that money out.

Do some research before making outlandish claims.

2 billion isn’t mega rich in football terms

man city have spent 1 billion in last 3 years and that only just got them the league and that didnt even get them out the champs league group stage.

Ashley is worht 2 billion but that doesn’t mean he has that in the bank…..that includes the value of all his assets….he would have to sell sports direct and NUFC to have 2billion in the bank. moron

Kevin Keegan is a total moron…sorry.

He tried to buy the league in the 90’s and cracked under the pressure then quit when he didn’t get his own way second time around.

He quit every job he has had…he is not mentally strong enough to be a manager.

    @Robinio

Selling players is part of football if a player wants to go they want to go. Its well documented that Nolan, Barton, Enrique and Carroll were becoming a bit of a virus in the dressing room causing unrest telling players not to sign contracts etc.

Yes Ashley has made mistakes but havent we all in life and in business especially those new to you. He has tried to redeem himself and anyone who now or even back then was in uproar about selling Carroll for £35m is off there head, every player has their price as proved with arguably the biggest club in world (man u) selling Ronaldo. Carroll is not worth £10m and is only worth around that because he is English!

That £35m has made the team we have today, if we get offered £30-40m for Cisse how can you say no we can use that money to bring in another 4-5 players and strengthen further. The model we have is unquestionably good and proves you dont have to break the bank to buy big names that flop (Owen, Luque, Emre, Viana) where did they get us?

Have some faith and some understanding that everyone is human, everyone makes mistakes and just say thank you we have an owner that bank rolled us so we didn’t end up like Pompey or Leeds. Who are we to say he shouldn’t take a few million back here and then of his £140m he has leant us, if that was my money I wouldn’t take to kindly to some imbecile telling me i can’t take a bit back here and there to help make me some more money!

MA is a d*ck changed the name of SJP sacked Houghton so he could bring in his mate Pardew. Didn’t buy a CB in January when we desperately needed one. If Willo or Collo got injured in February we would have finished about ninth.

Davy don’t try to reason with him; he’s a cnut who posted earlier today that Pardew resigned and then believes its excusable because he’s 17. He doesn’t know a thing about the club’s finances and has something against everyone in the Newcastle hierarchy!

nobody thinks we are amazing and the way chelsea and liverpool will spend we will find it hard finishing above 7th

but what do you expect? we dont have the money to compete with the teams above us….maybe spurs but they have the attraction of being london based which gets them better publicity and other players would rather live in london than newcastle.

do people think we should be top of the league? our side should be top 8 with the money we have
