There’s news in the Italian press today that Roma are interested in taking Newcastle’s Davide Santon to Rome.
Davide Santon – in action for Newcastle last season
Roma were one of the other clubs after the 7 times capped Italian International last summer, when Newcastle were successful in bringing the lad to Tyneside.
And Davide improved as a player last season, and it’s doubtful that Newcastle would even think of selling him at this point, and he is still a work in progress, and will only improve over the next few seasons in England.
The former Inter-Milan player is again interesting the Rome-based Italian club, after the 21 year-old played impressively in the second half of last season for Newcastle, who finished in 5th position and had a great first full season under manager Alan Pardew.
Roma’s Sporting Director Walter Sabatini has discussed the option of bringing Santon in with Zdenek Zeman, the 65 year-old Prague-born manager, who will become the new Roma manager.
Santon cost Newcastle around £5M last summer (€6M exactly), but it would take at least twice that amount for Newcastle to even think of selling the 21 year-old – but we think there’s little chance of that happening this summer.
Davide not only showed he is a top young player last season, but he’s already a first class professional and has been no trouble at all on Tyneside.
Davide was very patient as Alan Pardew brought him along slowly at first, once he had arrived at Newcastle, but then the lad improved over the last half of the season.
Davide Santon has played 27 times for Newcastle, and gives the club some flexibility, as he can play equally well in either full-back position.
What do you think?

Why would we ever do that?! If we lose him, we will need yet another LB.
Very lazy journalism going on today!

Comment #6The Italian League has dropped so far down in it’s standards; only Inter, AC Milan & Napoli I would consider as bigger clubs than us.
Santon would only go back to Italy to join Inter. If Santon ever leaves NUFC it’ll be to Real Madrid or Barca as he’ll be the best full back in the world one day or back to Italy when he’s an old man.

Comment #7And we’re linked to Cissokho again…
Hardly surprising given we were linked to him last transfer window and it was price that was an issue…
Literally only listening to statements made by club players and representatives these days, anything else is total rubbish.

I know we tried 3 CBs and got spanked at Stoke but its worth another try as pards can get the best out of any1, gives us an extra defender for more solidity but more width and as our wingbacks are quite attacking were a pacey counter attacking side, just need players to fill the void but marveaux could fill the left forward role

Comment #12Ibizatoon – yes, the technical term for a phrase that contains an unnecessary or implied duplication is “tautology” as in “unhappy Mackem” – the “unhappy” is unnecessary as it’s inherent in the second word. I’m sure you knew that.
Now for today’s quiz: Rearrange the following into a well-known phrase: season silly news for the it’s. – then apply it to all Toon items for the next few weeks.

Comment #18Colo-sus – Kjaer is a player ive always liked hes a cracking defender good in opposition box aswell, hes been shocking the last 2 seasons 1 in germany and then on loan at roma but that just means his price will be down perhaps a loan with a fixed view to buy

Simon Kjær makes so many rookie mistakes and he won’t come cheap.
For me to want to take a chance on him he has got to come cheap cause he won’t be a starter here in the beginning.

Luuk de Jong is way too expensive and isn’t a LW; only talk about buying a player like de Jong and Giroud. Keep Faith in Demba!

Comment #23I’d only accept £30m plus for Santon. If we sold him, we’d need a right-back as we’d only have Raylor and Perch as options. We already know that we need a left-footed left back and Cissokho needs to be signed.

Comment #24I am already bored stiff, with all the people we are interested in it would cost £300million.
I think the best thing is to just wait an see, I am sure we will be getting players we have not even heard about. Just like last year.

Comment #27lolololololololololol what does roma have to offer santon other than maybe more money? they are but a fallen giant who doesn’t even have ****ing europa while we have a good chance to continue our rise. they have what seems a good squad on paper with people like bojan and de rossi, who are in fact a bunch of under-achievers while our “no-names” are operating at a level which even they themselves didn’t realise they have at first. santon is a clever man and i’m sure he will pick us over them.
oh and at supatoonkid at post 6, you kinda forgot about udinese and juventus. despite my remarks about roma, i actually watch serie a more than la liga and i feel that you’ve underrated these two fine italian teams.
