Penalty Misery For Magpies Last Night

Holland are ranked fourth in the latest FIFA rankings and Northern Ireland are ranked 100th.

Robin van Perise after scoring last night
Note that’s Newcastle target  Ibrahim Affelay in the picture

So we suppose it wasn’t too much of a surprise when Holland thrashed  Northern Ireland 6-0 and they were 4-0 up at half time.

Shane Ferguson started the game for Northern  Ireland and the Dutch were already two goals up in the 27th minutes when Shane Ferguson gave away a penalty when he was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty area.

Robin van Persie scored from the spot and the Dutch ended up thrashing the visitors at the sold-out Amsterdam ArenA.

That was Shane’s third cap and he seems to have almost become a regular under new manager Michael O’Neill, who admitted his inexperienced side were no match for the country who were only beaten in extra time in the final of the World Cup in South Africa two years ago.

And Newcastle target Ibrahim Afellay played for Holland in the game, and he is shown congratulating van Persie in the picture above.

Here’s the goals from that game, although it doesn’t show Shane’s hand ball:

Senegal beat Liberia 3-1 in Dekar, but they had to come form behind after only two minutes and then Newcastle super-striker and Senegal captain Papiss Cisse missed a penalty after just 10 minutes.

But then the Senegal side – Demba Ba is not in the squad for these games – came back and equalized through Brahmani Balde in the 32nd minute, before Dame N’Doye and Sadio Mane added goals late in the game, to give Senegal a much needed win in their first qualifying game for the World Cup in Brazil in 2014.

The World Cup qualifying for African teams has them split into 10 groups, and the group winners qualify for the next stage, and there will be five teams that finally make it to the World Cup finals in two years time.

Here’s the highlights of that game plus Cisse’s miss, and the Liberia goalkeeper had the cheek to even save his follow-up shot, after he had parried the penalty.

OK guys, When I asked for more optimism I didn’t mean throw all reality out of the window.

We may not sign the worlds elite players, but we have signed some cracking players over the last little while and I expect that to continue. I don’t know to what extent, but let’s keep the positivity.

Ashley, Pardew and Carr know what they’re doing and part of that is to make sure no one else does. We may not be able to get all of the targets this summer, but we will be ready to go again in January if needed. I was gutted last summer when we didn’t get another striker in, however, come the end of January I was one happy magpie.

    So, let’s stay somewhat optimistic

I hope your not including me in that list as I have been very optomistic in my attitude to the way things are of late.

KAGAWA is out of reach unfortunately … Man u will probs end up getting him for around 10 million… One of the brightest young talents in the world … Japanese and only 23… Makes Eden hazard look like a school boy

We should trust Carr, AP, MA and their crews more when it comes to dealing with players.
    – Gameiro not getting playing time, we stopped negotiating with him cause he seemed disinterested and was just trying to get a big a contract as possible. Benched.
    – Situ, a player most of us thought we would be getting, he went to Swans and we were slightly baffled. Not gotten on the bench even.
    – Gervinho, a very quiet season for him, glimpses, but never consistant. Often starts on the bench.
    – Erdinc, issues with agent, but we refused to budge. He’s now moved on, but was benched until January.
    – N’Zogbia, we were after him, refused to go over the odds. He went to Villa, played allot, but been poor this season.

The list goes on, but when we put a value on someone, it’s cause that’s what the player is worth. So whatever player slips through our fingers, we have to trust that there are reasons for that.

On mulumbu great player hope that happens I actually think that’s what we need another tiote type player, him n tiote jus sitting protecting the defence would b great and it would allow cabaye to play that role he’s bein doin for France behind the striker
Then we could have young lads in the same roles in abeid n lad from Coventry doin the tiote n mulumbu role n Vukic in the cabaye role

Jail no I don’t include u in that list, jus sick ppl worrying about who will go look if someone goes they go n then we can debate on the blog but until a player leaves its pointless
Also another thing that annoys me on the blog is when we’re linked with a player jus say mulumbu for example some ppls reaction is well that means tiote is gone no it does not mean that have ppl never heard hav a squad

I think Hodgson has actually lost the plot don’t be surprised if he starts this lot against Les Bleus (4-4-2): Butland; Johnson, Kelly, Terry, Baines; Walcott, Henderson, Jones, Downing; Defoe, Carroll

Why we’re on England…what’s going on with Defoe’s yellow hair? Couldn’t take his seriously at all.

I think kuyt is a decent player……a bit like jonas for us but a more of a forward…has a reasonable shot on him and always gives it his all for the team.

If I was a liverpool fan there would be plenty players I wanted gone before kuyt…but fortunately I am not.

And as for England….I think Hodgson hasn’t had too long to assess players and find out exactly what they bring. He will know some details about them from his scout reports with fulham, west brom and liverpool but he seems to have selected players he knows.

I don’t think we will see any brilliant attacking displayers from England this summer but I do expect us to play some solid stuff, bit like chelsea in the champs league, and if luck goes our way anything could happen.

Wait until the start of the next qualification and then roy will put his own stamp on the side.

    @Dannyo

Don’t worry, they still have downing, Carroll and Henderson in the team.

Downing started the majority of their games and managed to accumulate a whopping 0 goals and 0.assists in the BPL

I still have no Idea how downing made the 23 man team ahead of Adam Johnson.

Downing’s BPL stats from last season:

36 games played in total (this includes coming off the bench) 0 goals 0 Assists

Adam Johnson’s BPL stats from Last season:
    26 games in total
    6 goals
    5 Assists.

Its clear who the better winger is, yet its Downing who made the team and not Johnson. Downing is the perfect example of a player being picked thanks to merit rather then performances. He has done nothing to warrant his place in the England team.

Holland look good. The ammount of creative players and goalscorers in their team is ridiculous. Van Persie and Huntelaar score goals for fun. Don’t really fancy them for the euros though.

Incidentally, I’ve just written a blog post on why I think France are going to win euro 2012, which might interest you given Cabaye and Ben arfa’s involvement. You can read it at

    @davybtoon

I think people just worry too much since the sale of andy carroll…which i dont understand as he was the only player that the club wanted to keep and sold due to th silly fee offered.

Nolan, Enrique and Barton were all sold as they were disruptive or not signing new contracts.

Other than that we haven’t let any players since we got back to the premier league.

If we want the team to move on you replace the people like gosling with somebody who is better than him and possibly better than a starting 11 player…..it gives competition to tiote and cabaye and forces then to up their game to stay in the side.

If you just spend all your money on squad players who are not young and going to improve then you have a big squad with not much talent…

you need to buy players equal to your starting side at least or young enough with time to develop.

    @percinio

the only reason I can think downing was selected and johnson wasnt is that johnson and micah richards are prone to not following tactics and losing the teams shape according to mancini which is why he didn’t see more game time.

The way england are setting up is defensive as we know we would lose in an attacking game with spain, holland, etc so downing might be able to follow the defensive side of the game better.

Can’t think any other reason johnson and richards would be left out.

Rich…Well said. It may not be a pretty tournament, but we should be solid, as you say, and that will be hard to break down. As long as we can take the occasional chance, as Young and Welbeck so far have, we may find ourselves in a surprising situation.

I say give Roy some time.

It’s a shame for Steven Taylor he got injured as he was lookin very solid and with all the defensive injuries you have to presume he would be on the squad ahead of Martin Kelly

That’s true, Capello never once ventured up this way. It’s a disgrace really. We must be the only country which does look at players from across the whole country.

Thank god our players don’t often go to other leagues or they would never get a chance.
