Newcastle youngsters Adam Campbell and Gael Bigirimana have been named in the provisional England squad for the upcoming FIFA Under-20 World Cup to be played in Turkey.
Gael Bigirimana – first call up by England
England U20 coach Peter Taylor has named a provisional 35 player squad for the competition in Turkey, to take place from 21st June to 13th July this summer.
England have never fared well in this competition and our best finish was fourth-place in 1981 and third place 12 years later.
Two years ago in Colombia, the England team qualified for the knockout stages as one of the best third-placed teams in the group stages – but we then lost 1-0 in the round of the last 16 to Nigeria.
This is Gael Bigirimana’s first call-up for any England Youth side, and demonstrates how much he has already improved since arriving from Coventry City last summer.
Adam Campbell – first call-up for England U20 side
Adam Campbell on the other hand has already played at the England U16, U17 and U19 levels.
There are big things expected of both Newcastle youngsters, and indeed Adam Campbell has been part of the match squad 18 for the last few games, and Gael has already appeared 25 times with one goal for the Magpies, which is not too bad in his first season on Tyneside.
This is the full England U20 squad:
Jamal Blackman (Chelsea), Sam Johnstone (Manchester United), George Long (Sheffield United), Connor Ripley (Middlesbrough), Jake Bidwell (Everton), Sam Byram (Leeds United), Donervon Daniels (West Bromwich Albion), Eric Dier (Sporting Lisbon), Jon Flanagan (Liverpool), Luke Garbutt (Everton), Michael Keane (Manchester United), Jamaal Lascelles (Nottingham Forest), Liam Moore (Leicester City), Daniel Potts (West Ham United), Adam Reach (Middlesbrough), Jack Robinson (Liverpool), John Stones (Everton), Tom Thorpe (Manchester United), Ross Barkley (Everton), Gael Bigirimana (Newcastle United), Jake Caskey (Brighton & Hove Albion), Conor Coady (Liverpool), Larnell Cole (Manchester United), John Lundstram (Everton), Alex Pritchard (Tottenham Hotspur), James Ward-Prowse (Southampton), Patrick Bamford (Chelsea), Saido Berahino (West Bromwich Albion), Adam Campbell (Newcastle United), Max Clayton (Crewe Alexandra), Rob Hall (West Ham United), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Chris Long (Everton), Nathan Redmond (Birmingham City), Luke Williams (Middlesbrough).

Comment #84The main thing I want to see this weekend is for campbell to get a good 30 minutes up front.
Not on the wing, not 5 minutes but a good run in his main position.

I think he will end up at west ham, they gave fat sam a new contract so look likely to back him, think they’ll sign carroll.
spurs will be in for david villa or leandro dameo (sorry for spelling)

Comment #87Sage, I’d like to see Campbell get half an hour up top as well. Not on the wing, tracking back, but up front in a position he’s comfortable playing.

I think we would all like to see that, and lets face it, what have we got to lose, play him from the start in 4-3-3 alongside Cisse and Benny, so much pace and movement from him and Benny, and you never know, we might get an added bonus of seeing Cisse at his best again, and that is nice to look at

Comment #91@31, Sage. Asking Pardew to explain what went wrong and then what he would do to correct failings is pretty well standard mangerial practice and Ashley won’t necessarily give the ok on the basis of proposed corrective actions. He’d look at the whole picture including Pardew’s track record over the years, relationships with players, fans and colleagues before making any decision.
Pardew refers to the possibility of finishing 10th or 11th as though a success but Ashley had agreed a target of 10th and won’t lose sight of the fact that we were staring relegation in the face and relied on other teams around us to slip up.
Ashley’s no fool and if he feels the need for change, then change there will be. We’ll find out soon.

Campbell to me is not an out and out striker, like a Cisse or a Shearer, he tends to play off the main striker, he is more like a Peter Beardsley, he is renowned for his pace, but his link up play is really good, I think he would be great in a 4-3-3

Comment #94Ant would be a great manager. I wonder of there will ever be a club that the fans manage. Like voting for team sheets and stuff. That way…the fans will only have themself to blame if they fail.

Comment #95And the fact that Pardew’s talking to the media as though nowt’s the matter doesn’t mean a thing… All he’s doing is giving the impression that if he is shown the door, it’d have come as a complete surprise and thinking it’d make things more difficult for Ashley if it comes to a parting of the ways.
Again, pretty standard behaviour for someone expecting bad news…. Denial of the gravity of the situation he’s facing.

the problem would be that you would get thousands of different team selections, so you would have to have one fan over-ruling the selection who has the final say, I nominate myself for that role, but then tens of thousands would also be nominating themselves. emmm, that sort of takes us back to square one doesn’t it.

I think “out and out” strikers can come in many different forms, for example Shearer would be less characterised as a striker, and more known as a CF for his aerial ability and hold up play.
Cisse would be more of a poacher, in the Ruud van Nistlerooy mould, whereas I would see Campbell in the “off the shoulder” ilk, like Defoe and the likes.
I wouldn’t see him playing as deep as Beardsley would have at times, but if his feet are anyway as good as Pedro’s then he’ll be some player haha

If you are still around, from what I have been told, he has looked very composed at the back reading the game well and bringing the ball out. Now, that description, given b a few friends who watched him, and various reports I read, sound like they are looking at him as a possible Colo role long term. I’m not sure on his size, I didn’t think he was small though. Personally, I’m not sure he is a great tackler, but then if you read the game well enough… I still think that it is a huge step up, so unless he went on loan and was played there a few times I’d be highly dubious as to converting him.

Mike Ashley believes that Beckham will sell more shirts as manager than what he did as a player ?

What role in a 433? One of the wider/inside forward roles? He is definitely a striker, he likes to get in behind using his pace, and has great finishing ability. He is more like a young Mich*#l Ow*& then any others in my mind. Definitely an off the shoulder of the last defender type of striker

what I meant was that a Cisse or a Shearer play in the centre of the forward line, they aren’t really effective dropping deep or drifting wide, I appreciate that Shearer did drift wide but only to create space for midfeilders to run into, the late Gary Speed taking advantage many times, but there best work was in the middle, whereas Campbell would be wasted there imo, as he has so much more to his game, he can take men on, link play up, pull men out of position, he is to me a Peter Beardsley type of player, probably not as good, but time will tell, but to play him as Sunderland played Kevin Phillips solely as a box man feeding off another striker would be a waste

Comment #109Worst bit about it is if Pardew had probably gave Bigi a good few more games in a row in midfield he would probably be capable of taking Jonas and Tiotes place he offers the same work rate and tackling of both of them except he can actually pass a ball with quality and wont get stupidly sent off either
Ferguson and Campbell with another competent manager would certainly have played a lot more games for us this season as well ever get the feeling that Pardew’s tactics are not suited to our youngsters as well? They thrive on the ball on the deck which we do not play this season

thats pretty much the role I would give him, Cisse in the middle with Campbell and Benny either side of him, with both of them moving and swapping positions, what I wouldn’t want is for him to be told that the box is where he should stay, I see more to his game than just being a poacher

it will be interesting to see how his career developes, what you see is a Jimmy Greaves type of player, whereas I see a Peter Beardsley type of player, lets just hope he turns out to be as good as either of those two, whichever of the two he is more like

Yeah I think you could be right, his feet are so good that to just keep him as a box man, but the game has developed so much so that those types of players are fewer and far between at the top levels.
It will be interesting, once we see more of him, how the club will manage his development.
Lilongwe
I’d hate for Bigi, who I see as a diamond in the rough, to become a “jack of all trades, yet master of none” type player, but, as with Campbell, it all depends on how the club manages their development, i.e through development squads, and ensuring that their loan destinations are suitable for their development.
I’ve followed the way St Mirren have been developing Newton and Dummett and I must say they’ve done a good job with those two lads, they may not make it at NUFC but they have a good future in the game

I haven’t really seen Newton, but Dummett has looked decent from the little I have seen from him, he could possibly make the grade, he isn’t spectacular but seems to do a decent job on his man, his reading of the game and positional sence have impressed me, a bit like Aaron Hughes, not spectacular but effective, and in all honesty, one or two Aaron Hughes’ never do any harm.

On the topic of Aaron Hughes, I always thought we made a big mistake letting him go, although he may have wanted out.
He was always a model professional, and especially now that we’re losing one of our top pros we should keep some of the more workmanlike players to give us that grounding. Flair and technique is all well and good, but you need a blend of flair and work rate.
I don’t think we have that blend.
