The French media are again reporting there are a different set of facts being put out by Bafetimbi Gomis and the Lyon President relating to the breakdown in communication with Newcastle over the weekend.
Bafetimbi Gomis – terms had been agreed with Magpies
The highly publicized Pierre Menes , a journalist with Canal +, was first to report that Lyon refused the Newcastle offer of €8M last Saturday.
And Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas had said when he turned down Newcastle’s improved offer, that the player would not want to reduce his wages at Newcastle.
But it seems that Menes contacted Gomis directly to determine the accuracy of that piece of information from Aulas.
Menes put this out on his Twitter account:
@ BafGomis has confirmed that he had indeed agreed terms with Newcastle, but OL (Olympique Lyonnaise) want more than £8M.
The way things are supposed to work in the transfer market is that teams agree a fee, and then the buying club is allowed to talk terms with the player, and then if there’s agreement on that, the player takes a medical and then signs if all is OK.
However, with Twitter accounts and the like, that linear and ordered list of items is not always followed.
And we don’t think Newcastle’s pursuit of Gomis is necessarily over, and as time goes by Lyon will in a squeezed position if no other club comes in with a better offer for their striker, and the Newcastle bid of €8M seems to us a very good offer for Gomis, who is a free agent in less than a year.

Comment #1Get Remy sorted, try and get Niang or even Bent.
Then get Gomis in January for £2-3m.

Comment #4I suppose if he were to wind down his contract at OM he would have greater options and be far less likely to come to us. Suspect we’ll stick at 8 which is probably too much under the circumstances but probably our only reasonable position to take. Actually it’s probably an instance of Ashley having somewhat loosened the purse strings and perhaps Joe has been in his ear to keep a bid in that previously would probably not even have been lodged.

gomis is the only one out of them that will come here.
Remy – I cant see it and I think that is Nile rangers fault.
it would seem to me that we have paid ranger a reduced rate to buy out his contract because he is going to jail and ranger and newcastle both know this.
once ranger goes down its already going to be bad publicity for us as a club, it would be a PR disaster if we signed remy and he got sent down for rape as well.
that would be 2 players in a very short space of time employed by us and found to be rapists. Its not worth being associated with, even if he is a top player.
Niang – we have more chance of signing gareth bale.

Comment #7On Gomis, I’d love to see him come but 8Mil is a great bid for a French striker on his last year of contract. I say hold out and see what a week brings.

Comment #8Pay for Gomis, waiting for January is too risky. Remy on loan – in 6 months in England he’s been relegated and arrested for rape with a case pending need to see how professionally he comes out of this situation. Possibly look at Austrian Philipp Hosiner as a back up.

Comment #9More than 8mil for someone who’s free next season isnt worth it at all. Plus, he’s good but not VERY good.
