We were linked with 19 year-old Derby County and England U21 central midfielder Will Hughes last year, and we wonder if this lad in on Newcastle’s target list for this summer?
But we will continue the series from last year, when we profiled players who would seem to be excellent acquisitions for Newcastle United this summer.
Will Hughes – England U21 creative midfielder
Will has played another full season with Derby and has 5 goals and 5 assist in 50 appearances for Derby, who have qualified for the Championship play-offs under former Middlesbrough and England Manager Steve McClaren, who was hired in September after Nigel Clough was fired.
Derby are in third place with one game to go and are 8 points behind second played Burnley and 15 points behind Champions Leicester, who have both qualified for automatic promotion, and former Newcastle coach Nigel Pearson is the manager at Leicester City.
The left-footed Weybridge-born Hughes has played 9 times for the England U21 side, and he joined Derby almost three years ago in the summer of 2011.
He made his debut for Derby in November of 2011 against Peterborough, as a 16 year-old and has gone onto play 85 times for the Rams, and is one of the up and coming creative young midfielders in the Championship.
And since Newcastle are interested in signing British players, maybe Newcastle can try to bring this lad to Newcastle this summer.
Hughes has been described as a flair player and not unlike former Newcastle youngster Paul Gascoigne, and Will is a great passer of the ball, and can create holes in the opposition defenses, with his vision and passing ability.
Sounds exactly what we need at Newcastle right now, and he is valued on transfermarkt.com at a low £6M.
And eighteen months ago Will said on the BBC that bases his style of play on central midfielders Xavi and Andres Iniesta of Barcelona, and if he turns out anything like those two – he will be a top player for sure.
The 6″tall Hughes could attract some top clubs this summer, but we just hope that (for once) Newcastle could move quickly and get this lad on Tyneside – he’s a player the Newcastle fans would just love, and that’s especially true if Newcastle are to sell the mercurial Ben Arfa this summer.
What do you think?

How were you going to hide on the sideline exactly Alan? As a potted plant possibly? We already think of you that way.

My M.O would be a full blown boycott, ie don’t go in the ground in the first place.
I’m all for any kind of action but just our luck it’ll probably be the one time we put on a half decent performance which would make it harder for fans to leave I guess, seeing as they’ve had little to no entertainment for 3 years to enjoy.
After all we couldn’t really fail could we? This is playing bottom club Cardiff at home, who just got mashed by Sunderland and the mindless wonga wearing brigade will say everything’s just cushty!!

Comment #26I’m of the same opinion Rotonda mate. The only way to get this weasel out is to hit him hard in the purse. He has no guts for a fight so if we either get relegated next season or there is a boycott he will cut and run. He has had chance after chance to straighten out his dealings with the club but it just continues to get worse. Ashley out!!!!!

Comment #34“His parents, Keith and Barbara, believed in him and mortgaged their bungalow in 1982 to raise £10,000 to buy a sports store in Maidenhead which he renamed Mike Ashley Sports.
His father, who worked for a seafood company, handled the books, his mother, a secretary, helped out behind the counter.
His parents, who rarely have contact with their son, the 25th richest man in Britain, still live in the same bungalow. Mike Ashley lives in a Hertfordshire mansion in 35 acres of ground, which was once owned by pop tycoon Mickie Most, where he can park the company helicopter. A father of three, his divorce settlement in 2003 cost £50 million. A party animal, he is a regular at Fifty, the gambling club in St James’s, and holidays in the playboy set of Sandy Lane in Barbados.”
This is from an article in the Telegraph. Such a warm loving son Mike is.

Comment #40As long as there are 50K fans who go to the games and are prepared to tolerate the regime, Ashley doesent care about the rest of them. There is a stadium capacity to fill. Other people can hate him how much ever they want.
Makes the walkout very important…
