There will be a number of Newcastle’s younger players leaving in the summer, and the Newcastle web-site is reporting that 22 year-old local lad Conor Newton, who has spent the last two seasons on loan at St. Mirren, will be joining Rotherham United this summer.
Conor Newton – in action at St. Mirren
That’s where James Tavernier and Haris Vuckic have been on loan this year, and Rotherham are in the play-off finals of League One, and will play Leyton Orient on Sunday at Wembley, for the right to play in the Championship next season.
It’s being reported the Newcastle-born player, who grew up in Whickham, has signed a two year deal at the Millers, and will join them when his contract runs out at Newcastle at the end of June, and of course it has not been renewed.
Newton came through the Newcastle Youth Academy, but like a number of other young players at the club, he has been unable to make the jump to become a first team player.
Other younger players such as James Tavernier, Haris Vuckic and Shane Ferguson are also expected to leave the Newcastle club this summer, to get first team football elsewhere.
And it’s also thought that Rotherham would like to sign Tavernier permanently, after some terrific performances from the 22 year-old this season.
Conor never played for the Newcastle first team but the central midfielder spent two good seasons north of the border at St. Mirren, where he played 61 times with 8 goals.
We wish Conor every success for his future in football, and Rotherham seems like a good move for him, and they have done very well this season.

Comment #41You would have to be a blithering idiot to want Strolla to stay.
In the last 19 years which season/game/whatever has he actually done well?
At a push id say he has had about 5 good games in 19 years.
All he has to offer is the big stupid lump up front who has zero first touch,is rubbish in the air and cant hold the ball up.As for getting shots on target its laughable.

Comment #43You get the impression that MA bought us and bit off more than he could chew.
There wanst as much profit as he thought due to the debt, imho he wanted to buy cheap and sell high.Problem is hes stuck with us as he wants more than will be offered. So he makes the best of it by getting some advertising and shafting the team by making money from the tv/player sales.
Sad to say but if he dont sell i hope we implode go down twice just to make him lose a large chunk of his precious pile of money.

Comment #44Spoof @ 39 – Unfortunately, being in the CL is detrimental to SD as ALL stadium advertising belongs to UEFA for their Commercial Partners for both CL and Europa Matches.
If we get back in to European competition, NUFC would have to remove, or cover up ALL advertising not related to their commercial partners ie Carlesburg etc.
If Ashley could find some way of maintaining SD exposure at SJP, without having the bother of the footy team, he would take it!!!

I suggested that relegation could be our best way of ever getting success 2 years ago, I got hammered for not being a true fan, I suggested it again last year and it was met mostly with silence and the odd “I can see your point but it’s a bit drastic” I have mentioned it again this year, still mostly silent but the comment’s of support for the suggestion far out number the comments against the suggestion, there are more and more who now view relegation which would take us off the tv PL money gravy train as being a sacrifice worth taking, because without that money then we would serve no purpose fom him, which could result in a sale and bring back some hope for us.

I agree that we want different things but as you say his sole purpose is exposure of his tacky shop but I also believe without hesitation that he hates us fans and would and has done anything to piss us off even more

I didn’t know that, so that’s the reason why he doesn’t want progress, no Europe allows for a smaller cheaper squad, which suits him, we have no chance do we, it’s all so depressing, what makes it worse is that this advertising ban will hardly encourage him to buy Rangers which was a hope, but they would be in the same position.

If we were to get in Champions League, UEFA take control of ALL advertising for those games, so Ashley would not be able to advertise his brands or Sports Direct in the ground on European match days.
Did anyone ever question why we had Sports Direct painted on the roof, and why we painted over it – in deference to fans and a judgement by Wonga – when we were no longer in Europe? It was the only way, after the group stages, Ashley could keep SD on the TV in Europe, it wasn’t needed this season

Comment #52I see Graeme beat me to that! Although advertising is only taken over by UEFA in the Europa League AFTER the group stages. i.e.. When the bigger teams drop in from the Champions League and it has a larger/wider interest from fans.

Comment #54LG, thanks for that as I already said to Graeme, I didn’t know that, could it not be turned to your advantage though, as Graeme mentioned Carlsberg and all other companies who do sponsor Uefa can still advertise so surely with cl football we could get a great deal off these companies, instead of Wonga on the shirt, strike a deal with Carlsberg, I would be amazed if they wouldn’t be interested as they are already spending a fortune on the sponsorship deal, surely there has to be ways somehow ?

All the advertising in the ground is centrally contracted to UEFA, and 48 hours before the game UEFA have to have access to put in their sponsors boards.
The problem with one of the alcohol companies sponsoring a jersey is that there are a number of European countries where advertising alcohol is forbidden – France is one. The sponsor logo must be removed from the kit.
As for the other sponsors, well, they pay handsomely for the sponsorship to UEFA, but I doubt it would pay as handsomely as free advertising and your own brand recognition – otherwise these other companies wouldn’t pay.
The other way around it for Mike would be to put SD as the clubs shirt sponsor, then it would be seen in Europe. I’m not sure which one I would dislike the most, SD or Wonga….

I guess Ashley will have had the research done into whether it is worth the money having SD on the shirt, in terms of additional marketing for SD at SJP. My guess would be the £8-10 million in cash plus any other benefits outweighs the minor increase in marketing potential for SD.
Selling the domestic sponsorship rights to a sponsor, and then making SD the European shirt sponsor may well be an idea for him to maintain exposure though.

Comment #59Hardly re-inventing the wheel though is it. A lot of people on here and elsewhere have suggested relegation would be a price worth paying to get id of Ashley. Only it possibly wouldn’t have any immediate effect as he’d still get a massive ”parachute” payment for relegation.

even though I did say it myself the thought of having SD on the shirt makes my skin crawl, however if circumstances were different and we were a CL club then I sure that having SD on the shirt would be accepted by us without even a second glance, the only reason it makes my skin crawl now is because of the man who owns, it’s not actually the company itself which I have a problem with.

I’d agree the parachute payments would keep him happy for a couple of years. If we haven’t made it back to the Prem in that time, then Ashley wouldn’t get his asking price, and is more likely just to cut the clubs spending than sell up at a value less than he wants. Sell off all the top assets and reclaim some of his debt would lower the price, but no one would buy us for £100million a few years back, why would that have changed if we go down again?
The thing that would hurt Ashley the most is the loss of exposure for SD, but whether that would be enough for him to take a loss on us I very much doubt.

Comment #65RH, thats true, I could be wrong but did you yourself not say that going down could mean staying down, it that happened then it could work, I know it’s a rediculous suggestion, but I just can’t see another way which could force his hand in terms of selling, and hoping for a change in philosophy from is a more rediculous hope than that of relegation, well I think it is anyway.

Yeah, I’m sure it would, would love to have Champions League nights back, even if I am unable to get to them anymore!
With the Prem shown globally anyway (Only around 7/8 of our games weren’t shown here) does the CL offer more coverage than we currently get on TV screens? I guess that all depends on who you play, and who plays the same night as you.

Exactly, that is my point. While I would love him gone, I don’t see him selling the club on anything other than his terms regardless of fan pressure. Whether we are relegated or not. I’m sure he would be happy to use the parachute payments to maintain a squad capable of going up.
I’m not sure what his exit strategy is, but I’m certain he will have an idea of when he would want to get out, and I doubt we will know when or his reasoning for it until it happens.

Comment #73Apparently Chelsea are offering Cabella £90,000 per week.
The only reason for Cabella to choose us over Chelsea is less playtime at Chelsea. Let’s hope he is one of the few…
Several reasons to choose Chelsea though. Better contract, better manager, better co players, league and cup titles, champions league and at Chelsea he could actually entertain the crowd.
