Newcastle are reported interested in Red Bull Salzburg striker Jonathan Soriano, and in the last two seasons, since he joined the Austrian club from Barcelona, he has scored an amazing 82 goals in 96 appearances.
Jonathan Soriano – 28 year-old Catalan striker
But one thing not in his favor is that the former Barcelona B player turns 29 in September, and the report in Football Direct News is that Bafe Gomis is a top target for Newcastle, but that this player is also on the list – but how far down the list we don’t know.
Because Mike Ashley owns Football Direct news – maybe these reports could have some truth in them – but maybe not.
Spanish-born Soriano joined Espanyol back in 2002, and then in 2009 he moved to Barcelona where he played mainly for the Barcelona B side (47 appearances and 37 goals) and just once for the Barcelona first team.
He has played four times with one goal for Catalonia, and played for all the Spanish Youth sides with 4 appearances at the U21 level where he scored 8 goals, and in 25 total appearances for all the Spanish youth sides, he scored 28 goals.
Not too bad.
So at least the 28 year-old certainly seems to have an eye for goal, but if we were to hazard a guess we’d say Newcastle will sign only one older striker, if any at all, and it seems that we may go after Soriano only if Newcastle cannot get Bafe Gomis to Tyneside.
And last season the 5’11” tall Catalan striker finished top scorer in the Europa League with 11 goals in 9 matches for the Austrian club.
He definitely seems a decent back-up for Gomis, and in the last 24 hours it seems that Newcastle are indeed trying to sign free-agent Gomis, and we think he would be a good signing for the club.
But why didn’t we try to get him tied up earlier in the year?
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Comment #2To be honest Ed I see this as a non starter. Ashley does not sanction moves for players who have no re-sale value so I even thing the Gomis links are paper talk. I could however, be wrong.

Comment #7Jail – evening – I cannot quite remember that guys’ blog name escapes me at the moment. I remember he was an expert on accounts and a successful businessman. He did seem reluctant to disclose details of his business though -even though he “cited” it to support his posts.
Probably runs a hot dog cart -and absolutely nothing the matter with that.

I still can’t get over how much these lot get away with, a leak to Sky sports about four players being sanctioned before the half price ticket deals went out.

Comment #13If he signs, where is the supply line coming from? The creative mid-field simply isnt played by P45DUE. He seems to think goals grow on trees or something.
Shock, horror Alan – to score goals REGULARLY requires dicipline, understanding and TEAMWORK. It doesnt matter how good the striker is, he needs players to put him through on goal. Wether it is a pass, a cross, a corner, a lay-off – without the creativity, the striker is a dead duck. Why cant you understand this simple, basic fact of life???
