Reports Debuchy Completes Medical At Arsenal

It could be that the transfer of Mathieu Debuchy to Arsenal happens sooner than we thought, with reports from London today that the Newcastle right back is taking a medical in the Capital.

Mathieu Debuchy – medical at Arsenal?

We’re not sure if that’s true, since it’s the very last thing that happens once terms have been agreed between the two clubs, and a compensation package agreed with the player.

But there was also news about two weeks ago that the deal had already been agreed to, with the formalities being completed after France’s involvement in the World Cup ended.

So it’s possible Mathieu could formally join Arsenal this week, although news yesterday in the Chronicle was that 22 year-old Costa Rica striker Joel Campbell could be used in part exchange.

So depending how much Joel is valued at by Arsenal – that could even be a good deal for the Magpies.

The news of the medical is being reported in Goal and they are saying the transfer will be announced before the end of this week.

It would be great if we can get Joel Campbell as part of the deal – he’s a young up-and-coming striker who has been on loan for each of the last three seasons, and looked a very promising player in the World Cup, and could do very well at Newcastle.

It would also be good for Newcastle to sign a striker this summer – but if Joel does come in we still need another two top strikers signed this summer.

I don’t really care on this anymore. Debuchy’s departure is all but confirmed. I am more interested in a) whether we get Campbell in. Not interested in a loan, permanent deal, yes, loan no. b) which one of the numerous replacements that have been touted we actually get, if any.

On Campbell, funny that when he was linked with us back in April very few on the blog wanted him. Amazing what a couple of decent performances at a World Cup does for you. Personally, I still think he would be a gamble, but at this stage, given our lack of firepower, one we almost have to make.
