There is a report in Sky Sports today that several Premier League clubs are interested in signing 25 year-old Bayer Leverkusen center-back Phillip Wollscheid, who stands just short of 6ft 5ins tall.
Phillip Wollscheid – available from Bayer Leverkusen
Leverkursen have announced they are willing to listen to offers for their center-back, and since Newcastle need to strengthen their defense, maybe we are one of the clubs after the defender.
But it could also be we have no interest in the player, and Newcastle are not a club who will sign up a player without doing the necessary long term scouting on him, so if we haven’t been interested in the player before now, it’s unlikely Newcastle would become interested now.
The German has been capped once at the U20 level for Germany and two times at the full Internationalist level, and while at Leverkursen for the last two seasons, he has played 67 times with three goals, and has looked an unimpressive young defender.
The player himself seems keen to move, and he had this to say:
“I believe the club have discussed a permanent transfer but also a loan option for me at present” “Outside of Germany, the main interest seems to be coming from the English Premier League, but I don’t know yet. We will have to wait and see.”
Sunderland, Hull and Southampton have all been linked with an interest in the player – but not Newcastle.
We suppose the Saints could go in with a very high offer for him, since they have plenty of money to spend after selling a number of their very best players this summer.
Newcastle were linked with Manchester City center-back Micah Richards last night, but nothing more has come of that story today, so the news report could have been (another) false one.
We’d love to see a striker, center-back and creative central midfield player brought in before the end of this transfer window, and it would then be the best transfer window for Newcastle for a number of years.
Newcastle aren’t credited with an interest in this player – at least not at the moment – but he looks a good center-back who adds height at the back, and he’s at the right age too.
What do you think?

Asked by the Gazette if he needed another striker, Pardew said: “I don’t think we’re short of anything because if I look at my roster, it’s full up.
“I actually haven’t got a spare place on the roster. I think, ideally, managers always want more players, and they always want more quality, but I’m not going to bemoan where I’m at.
LIES
“We’ve got good strikers in the building.
LIES
“But I don’t think that in terms of us in the transfer market it’s something we’ve completely given up on.
LIES
“We’re still looking at it and we’ve got our finger on the pulse. We’ve done that very well this summer.”
LITTLE LIE
Pardew has worked closely with newly-appointed managing director Lee Charnley and chief scout Graham Carr over the past few months.
“Myself, Lee Charnley and Graham Carr have known about every transfer that’s gone through and been involved in everything that’s in our ability to bring to the football club,” he added.
LIES
United were this week linked with a move for City defender Micah Richards, who is looking to restart his career away from Eastlands.
But Pardew is adamant that there has been no movement on incomings – or outgoings – in recent days.
“I don’t want to talk about speculation – that’s all it is,” he said. “We’ve been linked with a number of players. So where do I stop and start with that?
Fair enough
“At the moment we’ve a group and they’re all Newcastle players at the moment.
Get ya
“There’s no one imminently coming into this building at the moment. If we didn’t get another player in, I ‘d be fine and I’d quite happily attack the season with what we’ve got.”

Comment #7Someone asked me about if I’d be happy about de boer and similarities to ajax
My answer is I’d be happy with FDB and the playing/style ethos he’d undoubtedly try and instill at the club from academy through to first team but not with Ashley here as he wouldn’t have a clue and I very much doubt he’d give someone that much free rein in order to achieve what needed to be done I.e a complete overhaul
If Ashley were by some miracle to let this happen and actually gave a fcuk about the club and we received a public apology and received ruminations for lost income from advertising and he chopped off his own testicle, his left one to be exact then yes I’d be happy 😉

Comment #12Jeez Average, you’re not asking for much asking for Ashley to give a fcuk about the club and issue a public apology and offer remuneration for lost income from advertising and AND that he chop off his own testicle (got to be his left one!).

Comment #17hmm this was obvious that we need to ship players on as we have too many pro contract players and not enough numbers to go around ! theres ober/guti/arfa/raylor/saylor/vukic/abied/fergusson/sammy to name a few off the top of my head that we are paying a full time wage for and only a handfull of apps in them all from what i can see but no one wants them hence they keep taking the wages we pay them not to forget marv is still on our books even though he’s out on loan.
unless there contracts end theres not much we can do to get rid as in he’s done with arfa and guti in telling them to find a new club but if they dont go we wont see anyone else in if they do go maybe we will get micah.

Comment #18I thought when we brought this Chucky kid in that that was it and we’d the have to sell before we bought anymore. Aren’t we covered in every position now with the question marks more to do with quality rather than depth and balance. If we brought a striker in wouldn’t either Armstrong or one of the established or new strikers go unused. We seem to have too many bodies if anything.

Comment #19I agree there’s half a dozen players they’d be very happy to shift, certainly Ashley and probably Pardew too, although that’s probably true of most clubs.

Comment #20river/siem/chucky/cisse/goofy/armstrong/campbell/perez.
then if you go front 3 you can add cabella/arfa…maybe even sissoko.
i also think we have more then enough up front.
cb is the only place we fall short imo but we need to lose the dead weight if we are to get a class cb in.

Comment #21I’ll just leave this here
“I’ve nothing to moan about now in terms of what’s happened this summer,” Pardew insisted. “We’ve got a strong squad, perhaps the biggest and best I’ve ever had in terms of options, so we’re in a great position.”

Comment #22is it safe to come on yet or is it slit ya wrists time still?
such a depressing blog today
strange how its since beattie has come back
we’ve got 7 new 1st teamers who are all hungry and eager to do well here and in the prem
we’ve got 5 new attackers plus a world cup starring right back and the scums most improved player
plus the likes of sissko gouff n mbwia have all now had a full season under there belts and got the much needed experience
we’ve got a few youngsters who look like they could break into the team this season with wat looks like great potential
and after 3 months of no club footy you’d think that “fans” would be excited for the start of the season wouldn’t ya?
at least let a ball be kicked 1st!

Having seemingly repaired his fractured relationship with supporters who booed him mercilessly during the final home game of last season, Pardew added: “I’ve been here long enough not to have to play politics with the fans. They know I’m an honest person who works hard to try to achieve success.
“I have to make tough decisions at this club and I’ll make the ones I think are right to take this us as close as we can to winning something, or to getting us as close as we can to the Champions League, or even into the Champions League.”

Comment #24I’ve been a member of this blog for about 6 years now but i rarely post, mainly because of the idiots who sorround me on this blog. No wonder most of the premiership fans think newcastle fans are the most deluded in the prem.
Some of the posters on here think were still in 1996, when we had one of the best teams in the prem. Sorry to burst your bubble but we are now a mid table team at best, simply because we can’t attract top qaulity talent at the moment, i blame freddy shephard for this, buying over- aged useless journeymen for years. you need to realise this. I accept we need to play a better brand of football, but can we please start supporting the team and less of the anti pardew? Ashley has brought in far better quality signings than our previous owners in the past 10 years. Ba, Cabaye, ben arfa, debuchy, de jong, cabella. It’s not his fault the previous regime ruined our club, He has stabilised the club. Yous are all just deluded pricks, wise up. We finished 10th last season and we still managed to sign cabella, de jong, janmaat. what other mid table club can attract those kinna players. we are punching above our wieght at the moment, Wise up you fools

Comment #25It’s interesting how some players won’t move on, when it’s clear they aren’t integral to plans. I suppose a player like Steven Taylor or Obertan or even Benny might argue you’ve offered and sold me on this contract and I’ve signed in good faith believing I was going to figure and now that it hasn’t worked you want rid and it can’t be that easy.
Against that you’ve got to perform, it’s hard to imagine even they believe they’ve earned their salaries in recent seasons.
Certainly, the squad and club would benefit if those players could find a new club. I think if I were a player in this situation. I would recognise this and be flexible enough to try and find a way forward. I don’t think I’d want to hang around where I wasn’t wanted or appreciated even at the loss of some income. It’s one of the trickier aspects of shaping a squad it seems to me.

Comment #28If truth be told, we do have enough strikers. With Cissè, Riviere, Ferreyra as out-and-out strikers, we`ve also got De Jong and Gouffran who can play up front. In addition to those, we`ve got younger players like Pèrez and Armstrong who are pushing, even though Armstrong – like De Jong – is more of a second striker. So we do have enough strikers, the question is if the quality of those we have is good enough. The answer would be to just wait and see. Cissè might rediscover form. The new ones will either surprise us, or end up mediocre players. Simple as that. What`s the point in bringing in a new main striker when you`ve already brought in 2-3 already this summer? Just have them lingering on the bench? Let`s make up our minds concerning them in a couple of months. Pre-season isn`t what we should judge them based on.
What we would have needed was one or two CB`s, as some of the ones we already have are poor and shaky. If anything, too many of the signings this season have been offensive ones. It won`t matter a things how many goals we get if we let in twice or thrice as many.
Also we should have brought in a Deep-lying playmaker, or box-to-box rather (Cabaye-style). Pardew often line up in a 4231-formation, where one of the defensive ones is strictly defensive, while the other controls the game with his passing and vision. I see Tiote, Anita and Colback as defensive-minded without too much creativity. Sissoko is too sloppy a passer, Abeid unproven.
For NUFC, bulding from the back now is more important than getting another striker in. The back four and the two DMs are the ones who get the game going, and creative, goalscoring players further up the pitch won`t be able to do a thing if those 6 are sub-par in the build-up play.

@ Bassong day, That is the most ridiculous thing i’ve heard in about 2 years. Looking forward to celebrating that holiday when he’s in An Arsenal jersey.
why wasn’t Xisco giving his chance before this injury and why won’t he whenver he recovers, people say the coaches must not have faith in his ability, i don’t have faith in theirs! Ameobi starting before ANYBODY? i could go dig up a dead body from the grave, rest it in the 12 yard box and be more optimistic of scoring a goal. Give him a god damn chance.
Also ED saying this brazilian kid we’re spose to be signing is THAT GOOD without probably EVER seeing him play and assuming/hoping XISCO leaves in the summer without barely seeing him play is ridiculous.”
