Newcastle were interested in 25-year-old Belgium international defender Toby Alderweireld, when he was still at Ajax and before he signed on at Atletico Madrid on the last day of the transfer window last summer for around £6M.
Toby Alderweireld – Newcastle after him
The Sunday People (Alan Oliver) is reporting that Newcastle are trying to sign Toby before the transfer window closes on Monday night, and after a poor display by the Newcastle defense is the 3-3 draw against Crystal Palace on Saturday, we definitely need a center-back brought in.
The news is that Newcastle face competition from other clubs including Arsenal, Sunderland, Monaco and Southampton, who are all after defensive reinforcements.
The 25-year-old is a versatile defender who played for Belgium in last summer’s World Cup, and he can play at center-back or right back.
Alderweireld was linked with a move to Southampton only five days ago, and on Wednesday there was a report in Metro that Arsenal were close to signing the defender to replace Thomas Vermaelen, after he completed his (massive) £15M move to Barcelona.
Alderweireld played 186 times for Ajax with 15 goals, but had only limited playing time for Atletico Madrid last season when he played 22 times with 2 goals.
Toby is said to be keen on a move to the Premier League, and he has played 37 times for Belgium.
Newcastle are also interested in Celtic center-back Virgil van Dijk, who supposedly has asked to move on from the Scottish giants.
Let’s hope we can sign a good center-back before Monday night.

Comment #4I think there’s 1 major major problem with this heading and that’s Sunderland, Monaco and Southampton have way more ambition than us

haha there is no way you believe anything your posting. Judge Pards in May the last 9 months is enough to have judged him.
Yes we are 2 players from the top 4 Messi and Ronaldo other than that we have no fcuking chance of getting any where near the top 6.

Comment #12As much as we need a top CB (one who doesn’t flinch would be good), we desperately need a top striker. It seems only Percy doesn’t see it. If there’s money, spend it there.

Comment #14We are still trying to offload Mapou and HBA and there is still chance of seeing tiote being shipped out before the window slams shut, personally I think the powers that be are more interested in getting players off the books than adding to the squad

seriously though I am now thinking the personnel is not the problem it’s Pards.
He may get them to gel but it’s not looking likely right now, you’d think he’d be on thin ice

Comment #17Hope this one rumour is true and that we actually get the lad signed.
Alderweireld ticks all the Cashley boxes and is a far better central defender than we currently have.
The joke is that he should have been one of our first signings of the season, far too talented to sit on a bench and play bit parts for Athleti when he could be starring for us on a weekly basis.
Hopefully Charnley can continue the great work he has done so far, and can also convince Cashley to open his wallet for the lad.

Comment #19If we offer enough money we can sign who we want if they are available, if we don’t then we haven’t offered enough simple as, our centre backs are not good enough, we all know Colo can read the game well but he has not got the pace once an attacker gets past him, add to the fact he keeps turning his back when running out to confront an opposing player u seriously would fine any one of my players if they did that, and there are a few who play for us; Cabella does it and Sissoko who is a bit of a lightweight for a big fella!
Add to the fact we have shipped another 3 goals at home for the mi?lionth time, if we cannot see this is a vital area to strengthen then god help us, it really us pure pony.

Comment #21We had all 11 players in the box defending the Zaha goal in injury time and he scored from 15 yards out.
As 1 or 2 have mentioned we appear to be lacking leaders and organisers on and off the pitch.

Comment #22Kets imo has it right with this fella Toby our current centre half’s have no pace, tha always a liability for me, also one up front at SJP is amount to a horse whipping at Greys monument for Pardew, I bloody hate it.

You’re a little late to the party (at least 2 years). How’s life in the space station? I don’t know why NASA doesn’t lay on SKY Sports for you guys. But I expect you’re a bit busy.
Just to keep you up to the minute on what’s happening down here. Percy has found a death stare and Worzel Gummidge is hosting MOTD.

Our defenders flinched and turned their backs. Cowards! Great having lovely curly locks like Colo when you play well but it heaps on the embarrassment when you play like a big girl.

Comment #27Mick, maybe I am like a broken record. However, my broken record views are merely a commentary of the broken record-like(quite literally) disjointed and poor performances which puppet Pardew delivers to us on a regular basis, regardless of which new players come in.
Once you wake up from your observational slumber on these management and coaching issues, the clarity will be extraordinary.

Comment #29As someone said on the radio post-match, an 18 year old kid has saved Pardew’s bacon there. Again, through individual skill.
Pardew is very lucky that Zaha wasn’t playing in that game earlier or from the start. He looked a class above the rest of their players.
Their team was poor and we’ve huffed and puffed and had to rely on a teenager to create something.
Prior to the game Pardew had talked up the performance anticipation for when Siem is involved. More hype. Apart from a couple of clever link plays (which he thrives on) he was lost and quiet like some of the others.
Don’t get me wrong, Siem, Cabella and Janmaat are the type of players we need to identify. Well done to Carr again for finding good players on a shoestring budget.
Now only if Carr could advise Mr. Blobby for a suitable manager ot would fix a shirt term problem. Frank De Boer. Give him a shot

Comment #31Even a world class striker signing won’t help pardew. He’s just gonna play in an island on his own.
Pardew needs to sort out his tactics. DeJong whom he hyped up so much basing everything around him barely touched the ball when he was on.

Also, can anyone pick out a reason why the club should sign this lad as a tribute to John Alder?

Comment #34B&b bad wording – what I meant was I was of the opinion that pardew was average at best (you will see that in many if my posts in the past) but I also thought we had a cack squad.
Now I think we have a semi decent squad but they are playing badly, I put that firmly at pardew’s door

Comment #35Pardew wasn’t criticizing the crowd, he was criticizing the teams composure and not with any real venom either. Probably has a point, but it would have been better left unsaid I suppose. We also played alright and created a lot of chances and took three of them, but the nature of the goals conceded is fairly galling and hard to explain in light of how we’ve defended in the first 3 games. Pardews right when he says it’s disappointing for the club as the side looks capable although is clearly some distance from settling down and with each patchy showing the pressure mounts and the prospects diminish. You can start to imagine we might struggle a bit.

Comment #37Interesting thought : But also just a thought lads !
Pardews tactics were bollocks yesterday, he had oodles of talent just sat on the Bench !
I do,nt know about you lot but i would of had Aarons on from the start? The starting 11 would of had HBA somewhere in there but then Pardew would never pick him now! Otherwise he would lose face?
Everyone fan who has ever been in SJP knows what is needed for what regards Transfers, but as usual, we will not sign anyone this window? Sooner will someone be sold at the last minute? ( Tiote me-thinks ) !
We have had Fat Ash and Pardew for almost 4 years now and i,me counting the time until the Eight contract given to Pardew is over and we can look forward to a Trainer who actually knows what the F……. he,s doing ?
Some of the 9 players we have signed must wonder what sort of Circus of a club they,ve signed for ? God help them!
This is all due to the Untimely sale of Cabaye last January for less money that we could of got for him ! “Kinnears Folley”! i believe i called it then. Not only was the timing of the sale wrong but we could of got a lot more money in for the Deal ?
And so the Circus continues, until the next big ring Perfomance, 2 Points from three games, and a League Cup tie to follow in a few weeks against Palace which we will probably lose too at their place?
Its so much Fun being a Magpie !!!!

Comment #38Me thinks this one is pure paper talk ap stated we were very sound at the back only last week maybe they arent that bad? But my question is who works with the back four? No one it looks like headless chickens no shape the buck stops with ap weve needed a defensive coach for lomg tough mean defences dnt just happen they work on it everyday in training something I doubt we do or ever have hiadara makes the back 4 very shakey for some reason like taylor does and the others are mistake prone its just not acceptable anymore.
