We finally tracked down the Deloitte report on the Money League which they published last night, and the piece where they talk about Newcastle United – who are in 19th position with £129.7M in revenues – the highest revenues ever at Newcastle and a massive increase of 35% over the previous financial year.
Wait until we see what the official profits are – they will be a record too.
Here ‘s what Deloitte said about Newcastle’s last financial year, which was from July 1st 2013 through June 30th last year.
Newcastle United return to the Money League in 19th place after increasing revenues by 35% to £129.7M.
On the pitch the Magpies endured a frustrating season; exiting both cup competitions in the early rounds, and suffering home and away defeats to arch rivals Sunderland before finally finishing in 10th place in the Premier League.
Newcastle’s broadcast revenue, much like the other English clubs, increased significantly by £27.2M (53%) to £78.2M thanks to the new Premier League broadcast deals. This offset the loss of UEFA distributions (€5.3M) as a result of Newcastle’s run to the quarter-final stages of the UEFA Europa League the previous season.
Newcastle’s lack of European football in 2013/2014 resulted in four fewer home matches being played at St James’ Park, which decreased match-day revenue by 7% to £25.9M. The St James’ Park average attendance of 50,688 for the Premier League season was the third highest in the division.
Commercially, revenue increased by an impressive 50% to £25.6M in 2013/2014. This was the first year of the controversial shirt sponsorship agreement with Wonga, as well as the continuation of long term partnerships with Puma and Thomas Cook, and the addition of online gaming brand 138.com.
With Wonga and Thomas Cook already signed up to long term agreements, and Puma recently announcing a long term contract extension at the start of the 2014/2015 season, Newcastle United are commercially in the strongest position in their history.
After being an ever present in the Money League until 2007/2008, the new Premier League broadcast deal has helped propel Newcastle United back into the Money League top 20 this year.
Given the strong commercial performance of the club coupled with the Toon Army’s continuing support in their impressive numbers, Newcastle should be capable of an extended stay in the Money League in future editions.
One reason we expect huge profits of around £40M – is that we didn’t buy any new players in that financial year – just two loan spells for strikers Loic Remy and Luuk de Jong, and it was when Joe Kinnear was the Director of Football.
Finances are of course Mike Ashley’s strong point, but if he would only agree to spend some (most?) of the profits on building a top team at Newcastle – we could be back in the top six in the Premier League with even more revenue.

Comment #41We’re going back over, we used to always have real quality strikers, now we rely on a poacher (Cisse) and Perez, which I’m sure he’ll be class in a couple of years but MA will have cashed in by then.
I’m just pleased I didn’t renew my season ticket, I hate the thought of supporting this regime.

were always going to fall behind spurs in the revenue stakes
there in Europe last 5 seasons 1 in the champions league so they can charge more on the the old shirt sponsor and they also get all there revenue its not outsourced then funnelled away to another company
it would be a lot easier if the club got all its revenue
say we made 50mill profit he takes say 20 mill and 50% of say player sales to clear the debt
the club and the fans know where we stand
instead all we get is lies and dishonesty and a debt that seems to go up not down

“This does not surprise me
I have always said Ashley has transformed this club’s financial health for the better”
The club is still, what 130 million in debt, how is that better.
Oh, btw, the increase is revenue is because OTHER clubs have invested and made the Premier League more attractive… Ashley has not done anything to improve the clubs financial situation, apart from switch the clubs debt to himself.

Comment #49Just watched the Asian cup tonight and still wonder why Tim Cahil isn’t still doing a job in premier league would have loved to have seen him in black and white.
Anyone think he would still make a fantastic impact player ?.. seem to always come up with the goals in the big games

Comment #50for me this statement could be a way for a more ambitious billionaire to buy Newcastle, MA has done well concerning Newcastle revenue and has shown you can make a lot of money here which Sheppard and Hall couldn’t make at Newcastle.
this will make attention to other buyers and probably part of the regime plans

I don’t understand how a supposed clever business man misses some much with us
ok I don’t expect champions league and you would have to mad to think we could get it but we could be in Europe regular if we wanted and it will generate money then there is the cash of the tours in preseason if your a popular club with good players you get paid to play in preseason
so many avenues all would boost sd profile as well
the longer he is here with us the more I think he is just a weasel that got lucky

Comment #54It all makes complete – and totally depressing – sense when you think of it from Ashley’s point of view. Last season was perfect:
– Constantly in the public eye to sell SD
– Out of cups quickly so no risk of clashes with Rangers ambitions or having to spend on squad for Europe.
– No outlay on running the club
– No outlay for the huge advertising that helped his net worth by several million per day.
– Finished dead on target – 10th.
It’s so obvious now that the profitability of the club – as long as it makes some – is irrelevant. Why would he care about £30m in profit when he makes that in SD share value every month through free advertising?
Evil, evil b*******d. Shafts an entire community just to further his race to have the fullest pockets in the cemetery.
I hope it’s a sprint in his case. Git.

Comment #55I don’t get the agro with keeping Carver in as long as it is in a lower level coaching capacity or assistant manager. He worked with Sir Bobby and was highly regarded, so he is clearly a decent coach. Just a terrible head coach. It’s Steve Stone I don’t get really, he was a crap footballer and by all accounts appears to be a crap coach on top of it. This German guy would do for me. He was critiscised for his Gung Ho attacking style in Turkey, sounds like a former Newcastle manager, who was known to be a smidge temperamental.

you have to admit MA is a good business man, he even sells 50,000 tickets to gullible fans to watch dross football.
The fans are the victim of their own downfall, pity they can’t see that.

Comment #57They could increase match day revenue by increasing ticket prices. Not sure how well thAt would go down given the rubbish we have to endure every week.

Comment #59Ancient C; Ashley has improved the club’s finances by being frugal while maintaining Premier League status. The exorbitant wages and transfer fees have gone. He is not prepared to spend the club’s hard earned cash on overpriced garbage. The club must be applauded for that, however the miserly stance is taken to an extreme which restricts the growth of the club in a sporting sense and the business overall.

The clubs finances have not improved since Ashley has arrived. There may be some short-term improvements because of tv money going up, but that is because of other sides being entertaining and spending money.
Being “frugal” with wages and transfers – leading to improving the clubs finances is debatable. eg, if he had invested in better players & those players had improved, then the club could have an improved league position and more money from player sales.
Being the bottom spenders in the Premier League does not make Ashely frugal, it makes him a gambler.

But he is willing to take revenue streams away, devalue the club and add value to SD.

Comment #63Novo, at this moment in time, your post sums it up, MA said he would plough profits back in to the club, it’s time for that isn’t it, everything is cutting costs and it cheapens the club, strange though thar for years we were one of the richest clubs in the world yet we were about to go in to administration, SJP certainly did not want to use his own money for the bail out did he! This club has a history of sharks running it, and there is a Great White one here at the moment.

Comment #64dazzler @55 – I agree about Carver there are many people in all walks of life who are good at their job but not good managers (I am one of them 🙂 )
As I said previously a new coach could easily squeeze out the existing staff and slowly bring in his own people.
