In the summer of 2012 when Newcastle were looking to sign Lille right back Mathieu Debuchy, we were also linked with Dutch International full-back Gregory van der Wiel, who at the time was still at Ajax.
Gregory van der Wiel – available this summer?
In fact the only senior player we signed that summer was Vurnon Anita – even though we were going to compete in the Europa league in the next season.
But it just hasn’t worked out for Vurnon on Tyneside, although he’s good technical player, and he could even be sold this summer.
Gregory van der Wiel finally signed on at money-bags PSG, for a reasonable £4M on a four year deal.
PSG are trying to reach a new agreement with the player, and if they haven’t done that by this summer, then Gregory could be available at a reasonable fee.
Otherwise PSG could lose him as a free agent in the summer of next year.
The report is in talkSPORT, but we doubt that a player who can only play right back or right wing back would be a target for Newcastle this summer, with Daryl Janmaat having such a successful first season on Tyneside.
Gregory’s agent is Mino Raiola, and this is what he has said about his client to RMC:
“We are currently discussing for a possible extension. But we have not yet found an agreement.” “I hope that it will come, because there are a lot of interested clubs in England, Spain, Italy and Germany.”
“I hope that we will get there, but we do not yet have an agreement.”
Gregory van der Wiel has played 28 times for PSG this season with four assists, and we’d be surprised if he wanted to join Newcastle, after being used to playing in the Champions League every season with both Ajax and PSG.
Gregory played 191 times for Ajax with 13 goals and 17 assists, and at PSG he has made 92 appearances with one goal and 14 assists.
We’d be more willing to believe the report if Gregory was more of a utility defender.
Well that’s unless we are going to sell Janmaat this summer ……….

Comment #1Regarding FDB: i think he accepted a contract extension for a larger pay out for Ajax! If he doesnt get another job offer he stays on with his new contract, would suit both parties!

Comment #2Speculation speculation, we all know how the business is run ( you can hardly call it at football club). Unheard of kids with potential sell on value is the regime.

Comment #3Llanbias voted off the Rangers Board as King gets 85% of votes.
Wonder how massive his contract pay off is – Ashley could have fixed it for him.
More significantly what now for Ashley – does he call in his loan and leave Rangers in the do do or can they service the loan ?
Will a new Nomad be appointed in time?
Or will the whole Rangers show go down the pan leaving Ashley to pick up the pieces ?
More fun than waiting for runners to finish a marathon in Sunderland.

Comment #4Ha Raiola is his agent? No way he comes to newcastle! Raiola negotiates like a mafia godfather and Newcastle negotiate like A kosher deli! The 2 parties would never agree

Comment #5Are their actually any fans who believe Carver is the way forward. We need to start all over again with a new Head Coach and backroom staff.
The team has gone stale and fresh ideas are needed but sadly nothing is gonna change.

The starting point should be a new owner and work downwards from there.
