Whether we are relegated or not this season, there will be a huge clear-out of players in the summer, and Newcastle are already active in trying to sign up players to arrive in early summer – but those plans will change drastically is we do take the drop – because most of the players we are after will not sign on if we become a second division club.
Sylvain Marveaux – Newcastle United winger
Sylvain Marveaux was signed in the summer of 2011 when we snatched him from under the noses of Liverpool on a free transfer from Rennes, and after having a fairly bright start to his career, he wasn’t given many opportunities at the club.
That resulted in him being sent out on a season long loan deal to Guingamp last summer, and he has played 23 times with two goals for the French club so far, and when he comes back in pre-season he will have one more year of his five year contract left.
PSG recently played Guingamp and hammered them 6-0 and after the game Sylvain was seen talking to former midfielder Yohan Cabaye and he was quoted as saying this:
“I miss Newcastle.” “It was good, but you know I was blacklisted.”
Some fans would agree that the 29 year-old was frozen out under Alan Pardew – and he didn’t seem to get too many chances.
But, as expected, John Carver has denied Sylvain was blacklisted on Tyneside – and this is what John has said about the comment:
“He had the same chance as everyone else this pre-season,” “Obertan in pre-season was on fire because he pushed his head above the water and kicked on.”
“If it wasn’t for that injury which set him back. He took his opportunity in pre-season.”
Carver is making the point that Obertan showed some good character in pre-season, and stuck in and until he was injured on November 1st against Liverpool, he was one of Newcastle’s best players early in the season.
We don’t expect Sylvain to be retained this summer, and he could either be sent out on loan again, or more likely sold to Guingamp for a fee.
Newcastle will try to bring in a number of new players to significantly strengthen what has been a very weak squad this season.
And we could still be relegated because of the lack of foresight and common sense shown by those running the club from the top – especially during the January transfer window when we should have strengthened a paper-thin squad.
Comments welcome.

Comment #3Marveaux was loaned out on the 22nd July to Guingamp with the option to buy, He hardly featured in pre season prior to this with HBA.
He may not have been ready for the premiership with the idiots we have coaching, but on the occasions he did get on the field for me he did ok.
The simple truth is our coaching staff cannot handle flair players, they just do not know how to use them.

Despite some obvious flaws it would have been nice to see hba and marv under a proper coach.
Flair and creativity have been and continue to be an absolute premium under the containing, long ball rubbish we suffered under pardew and continued on by the delusional oaf Carver.

d we must have a top coach lined up just bcos we have been linked to Mitrovic.
To believe Fatboy would spend 15M on one player is one thing, but to then think a top coach would even give us a passing glance is something else.
Wake up people, we dont have any ambition, remember.

Comment #8LCBP, also Chris and Cyprus from a couple of conversations ago:
Absolutely right. There is a lot of talent in this squad, which is worth over £100M, compared to other squads half that value at the bottom of the table. Carver sets up for a match with a picture in his head of a team he hasn’t got, then wonders why Riviere isn’t scoring and Coloccini isn’t a rock. Set up properly, with players supporting each other in key positions, these players should have been picking up odd results all along the way. Charnley took a gamble in January, and the gamble was that Carver surely couldn’t be the worst HC in the PL. Now he has his answer, and btw the suspensions are not unlucky lightning strikes – you can see the players’ despair, and poor coaching is the cause. I don’t blame Carver for chasing his dream, but I don’t think he’ll have to wait 48 hours to discover his fate after the West Ham match, and it doesn’t depend on the last two results.

I have hoped and more than half believed that since January. It’s the only logical explanation for slimming the squad down until we have just a few high earners running down their contracts, and this gamble on no head coach appointment in January. Unfortunately there are also possible illogical explanations, including sheer stupidity, but let’s hope. We’ll know in less than a month.

Comment #13From Sky Sports:
Rafa Benitez will not stay on at Napoli and has received offers from several clubs around Europe, according to Marca.
The Spaniard’s current deal at the Serie A side expires at the end of the season and he will move on, irrespective of whether Napoli triumph in the Europa League or not.
Marca reports that he would like to return to the Premier League – his family still live near Liverpool – and that he has an offer from an unnamed top-flight side, although it is not Manchester City.
Hmmm…..

He’s getting it from all angles at the moment so let’s keep the pressure on.
Shame AO decided against anything this weekend although I can understand why (still don’t agree with it, should of hammered it home) as they’d be blamed for getting us relegated no doubt especially after all the spin in recent weeks from the club/bullshit bishop saying we need your support to get us over the line.
Emotional blackmail. Shameful.
Where have the club been when we needed them to turn up, to compete, to buy decent players, to replace those that left, to appoint competent people in positions of power and a club to be proud of?
F*****g knowhere to be seen that’s where.

Comment #18The Financial Times published a ranking of proven (5+ season) managers in the English league, based on performance:
“Generally in football, the team with the best-paid players wins. Only a few [20 or so] managers consistently finish higher than their players’ wage bills would predict. These managers are the elite.”
Bob Paisley topped the list, Fergie and Wenger are up there, Sir Bobby and Dalgleish… Rafa is 7th on their list of “special ones”, a few places above Moyse. Either would be an excellent appointment. If only.

Ashley is a businessman. A 10% fall in season ticket sales is about £1M, but then ex-ST holders attend some matches still. A couple of league places are worth about £5M. PL status is worth many times that. ST sales are small potatoes in MA’s world.

Comment #31Wait a minute JC, does that mean Ober is staying on? How many more years to find that elusive confidence? I’m vaguely suspecting he can’t find it because he’s _ _ _ _e. Some of these players must be released or paid to move.
Much as I blame the dynamic duo of AP and JC for the crap football they’ve almost always served, some of these players just didn’t make it. Although it’s true that this guy didn’t get many chances at all. And I remember a certain HBA sitting out months because Ober was keeping his position… by

Thing is Sunderland have actually given their last managers lots of funds for players and would likely spend the TV money if they got someone like Benitez
We get Carver for the next couple of years and they get Benitez that would just be typical of our luck under Ashley
