Darlow, Bigirimana, Satka, Wijnaldum Start At Portland – Live Video

Portland Timbers (MLS)_logo.svgnufc emblem

Newcastle will play the last of their three games of the US tour tonight when they play the Portland Timbers at Providence Park.

This is the only MLS team Newcastle will play on the tour.

Head coach Steve McClaren has just announced his team for tonight’s game and it looks like Newcastle will give a lot of their youngsters and fringe players a game tonight, against a Portland team that will largely be made up of their second team.

Newcastle: Darlow, Bigirimana, Satka, Ferguson, Aarons, Abeid, Wijnaldum, Gouffran, Sissoko, Ayoze, Cisse
Subs: Woodman, Janmaat, Obertan, De Jong, Armstrong, Anita

That looks like Newcastle will play three at the back maybe in a 3-5-2 formation but Bigi, Satka and Ferguson are not very experienced..

It looks like they will be the beck three – and maybe McClaren is trying a different formation to see how the lads can adapt to it.

Only Sissoko and Cisse started the last game at Sacramento Republic, so McClaren wants everybody to get a game on this tour.

Fabricio Coloccini has an injured Achilles and Emmanuel Riviere has left the squad through injury and returned to Newcastle.

It would be good to get another win tonight, and we have one win and one loss so far in America.

You can watch the game live here.

SDJ is intelligent but more importantly he’s a leader, good to see him having an affect.

Preseason friendlies aren’t a barometer for how a season will unfold, we lost 5-1 to orient with a strong side, that season we finished 5th in the prem.

Liverpool beat man utd last season in the US, they lost both league games though to man utd. Lamela was a world beater in preseason, couldn’t do nothing in the league, Jovetic was a goal machine in preseason last year, scored in the 2nd game then went missing for the rest of the season.

These friendlies mean absolutely nothing. Don’t take to much away from how a season will unravel buddy

Better second half players actually looked like premiership players obertan janmaat siem had some good touches and army looked good even tho didnt get the ball much i just hope the lad grows …rolando good think he thinks his just too cool for school atm dont think its bad attidude think he just knows we should be beating these easy so he feels he shouodnt celebrate his goals but we need to get himnto sign a at least 30k contract otherwise we could loose him like qpr did with sterling and they way it lools like we might with kemen :(….woodman good…..fergy looks capbable prem player ????

I think McClaren done this defensive line on purpose, with bottom line – buy 2 CB otherwise I prefer to play Ferguson there than Williamson 😉

Gouffran, Cisse, Abeid completely useless. Sissoko bad attitude. Obertan gave much better change IMHO. Maybe he has less typical sports skills, but got better heart to play.

De Jong as playmaker – damn his visions are great. I think with time, he will be extraordinary. Bigi quite good as LB, maybe Janmaat and Chancel as CB?

This is first game of pre-season I watched and it was good to see our guys again on the pitch 🙂 Howay the lads 🙂

Just goes to show you how much attention I pay to friendlies can’t even remember what season they happened in or the score ahahaha.

As you say it’s all about how we go against Southampton, we do need a testing run out for the senior lads when they return, some tough pre season games that’ll ensure we step up a level or 2

Perez missed an opportunity to stake a claim/reduce chance of overspend on someone new. I was reminded of number of set piece goals conceded last season and need for presence in the box. Doesn’t need to be height, Mbemba is strong with great leap.

The commentator said a few times I wonder if this will worry Steve Mac that were gettig beat by a 3rd tier mls team. Thank God he didn’t get to see williamson.

Only thing that pissed me off about that match was the commentators were making pt 2 out to be world class an there beating a full NUFC team. They really didn’t have a clue though they kept calling Janmaat Janmart. Haha Aaron’s though top quality better than sterling no doubt just hope he is more loyal than him.

Overall, it’s fair to say that none of the back five will start, so as all goals were defensive blunders, I’m not worrying on that front. Obertan surprised, having a decent game. Poor Arma, his runs get missed when they should be looking for his runs into the channel. That will improve. Aarons sparkled and De Jong showed his class. Third game in a week, not sure what was expected. Colchester beat WHU and Salisbury beat Bournemouth today, but they won’t be flapping either. By the time we play the german munch-bunch we’ll have a much better idea where we stand. There are no negatives to take from pre season friendlies, it’s purely about getting match fit and buying into a new philosophy.

Give Aarons a new improved. contract ASAP. He was our most creative and classy outlet in the match. Was always a threat and never fails to impress every time I see him play. Why the hell we haven’t already signed him up long term is beyond me.

It.was obvious who the deadwood was from these matches.

Gouffran, cisse, willo, abeid. More will show up but these are glaringly obvious should be nowhere near the team.

Gouffran is so consistent – always the worst player on the pitch, any time, anywhere. Ferguson, Abeid, Satko, Bigi – best of luck for the future lads, sorry it didn’t work out here. Cisse and Sissoko – any reasonable offers accepted. Darlow cemented his position as fourth choice keeper.

Well said BobbyB, voice of reason. I am pleased it didn’t stay 4-1 though! Meaningless, as the score should be, that would have been a bump back down to earth, following the excitement of the signings and hints if an exciting new playing style.

Altamullen, you’re not wrong about the final score lol. That said, we won’t concede goals like that again will we? Too many people read too much into what was basically a run out for the fringe players. You can already see how the more senior players are playing how macca wants them to. Nothing to worry about imo.

    Bobbybee,
If it’s fair to say that those back five won’t start why are they playing together so close to the season beginning. It is very worrying that he keeps playing Bigi az a RB and Ferguson shouldn’t be anywhere near the squad.

The scoreline might be meaningless, true enough, but the fundamental lack of ability and application shown by too many of our players is not, surely?

If they go to all the effort of making these two trophy signings and don’t sort out tge defence then the policy hasn’t changed at all, only that they’re spending more to make more.

    Morning Jail,
Guessing it probably answers some questions seeing fringe players in the 1st team. You don’t need to see more experienced players, other than in training; they’re more likely to be the same in the spotlight/hot seat. I didn’t see much in defence that gave me any hope of even reliable cover for first choice positions.

Jail, maybe because he promised to have a look at everyone and three games in a week, you can’t risk overdoing it and starting the season with a load of muscle strains. Seriously, these games mean nothing, other than getting players fitter. We’ll never concede like that once the team is finished. Like I say, Salisbury beating Bournemouth is far worse on paper, but it would never happen in a proper game. It’s simply about seeing who can – and more importantly who can’t – play pass and move. He’ll have learned more from that than if we’d put out our best eleven and walked it. Give it time mate, it’ll work out.
