With less than two weeks left of the summer transfer window we should see players starting to leave Newcastle who are excess to requirements.
Remy Cabella will be joining on loan to Marseille as part of he deal to bring Florian Thauvin to Newcastle, but we see Florian as big a risk as Remy was when he came in a year ago.
We’ll just have to hope Thauvin adjusts better than Remy was able to.
Mehdi Abeid in action at Sheffield United
And it looks like Mehdi Abeid is set to join Panathinaikos full time, after he had such an excellent season on loan with them the season before last when he scored 10 goals in 38 appearances for them – so this should be a good move for the 23 year-old Algerian International.
The transfer fee is said to be around £1.5M to £2M, and he is said to be having his medical today.
We were hoping that Mehdi would have made it at Newcastle, but with Gini Wijnaldum coming in and Cheick Tiote staying at Newcastle, he wouldn’t get too many chances at the club – and it will be a good move for him to Panathinaikos.
We should see more players moving out for small fees or out on loan in the next 13 days, principally to keep the wage bill under control.
Players who could be moving include Yoan Gouffran, Haris Vuckic, Mike Williamson, Rob Elliot, Gael Bigirimana and Sylvain Marveaux.

Comment #2Can’t really make my mind up about Tiote, never could really. He’s poor on the ball, head down and always looking backwards, I always got a bit annoyed with Scott Parker when he played for us for similar reasons but at least he could pick out a pass to split defenders, can’t recall Tiote ever managing that.
We do need someone with presence in the holding role though, Colback and Anita are shoved about too much, but Tiote just doesnt offer much.

…we are still short of a CB and a striker. A young RB wouldn’t hurt either!

Comment #10Been a fan of abeid since I first saw him play for newcastle, albeit in pre season. Bad move to a let him go IMO as he has a lot of potential and if given games can do a very good job. I’ll always remember him dominate yaya toure lol, haven’t seen anyone do that do him physically. Leaves us light in midfielder wijnaldum is playing primarily as a 10 with de jong and Sissoko being utilised as a winger. We’re left with Anita, colback and tiote, well unless they start giving kemen games I guess.

Comment #13Why complain about this signing? He can only help our squad whether that is in terms of first team quality or competition for places. We should all be glad that we have actually spent around £49 million this window with the possibility of more, Ashley lived up to his words.

Comment #14Plenty of benefit in the Thauvin deal Switch. Risky buying young and banking on potential, but either one of them would fit that statement. Difference being Thauvin actually plays in a role we need to fill, whereas Cabella is a central attacking player behind the striker who was shoehorned into playing RW and wasn’t any good at it. Can’t remember one decent cross he put in all of last year, no tracking back, useless stepovers followed by a stumble and gives a breakaway down the right to the other team.

Problem is signing Thauvin does neither add competition or first team quality because we are losing Cabella in order to sign him

Comment #16More of a Laurent Robert than Cabella ever could have been. Cabella is tailor made for Ligue 1 and not premier league. I’m sure he’ll be a great buy for OM.
As for Thauvin, he has more pace, a great left foot and could fit in perfectly on the left of a 4231. OM tried to play him in w no 10 role this season as they had no other options. He is not a no 10. Fans will need to cut him some slack in opening matches but let’s be honest, between having a right footed Obertan on the left or Thauvin, who would most people prefer to try?
I do think this may mean we could cash in on Sissokho which would give Aarons the chance to establish himself on the right and get us a decent CB with the money. I’d prefer we keep Sissokho but if we could get a top CB I’d take the compromise. Aarons and Thauvin with wijnaldum and De Jong if ever he stays fit should have enough to create chances for mitrovic.

Comment #18An in form Tiote allows a 4-1-3-2 formation. While he is no genius with the ball, Chuck has a nose for where play is going and can break things up. With him on top of his game, NUFC can sit Anita and Colbeck and play two strikers. Ain’t two strikers what we want?

Comment #19So suprised that fans are writing him off before he has even had a chance, we’re clearly building for the future. Mitrovic, Wijnaldum, Mbemba and now Thauvin are all young along with Perez, Toney, Aarons and Armstrong. We still have the experience to make sure these players make it which is why I’m convinced this 3 transfer window plan is going to work. I’m personally very very excited for the future.

Comment #20Shearer statue – made in China ?
Would last longer if made in Bronze.
And how come there was no one in the north-east who could have made it ?
Shepherd commissioned it so that’s his prerogative.
If we put him on the pitch might even score from a corner.
And if he arrives late August does that beat the transfer deadline ?,

That’s my thoughts, I had my reservations about Cabella and we never played him in his true position anyway. Thauvin will come good but I would prefer a better LB than Hairdryer if he’s playing on the left.
All those people who say he’s the same stature as Cabella, your wrong he’s bigger than Cabella, not physical for a player of 5’10 but he’s not as fragile as Cabella.
JB is right like he doesn’t cross it much.

I’ve not looked at him, whereas Cabella I watched quite a bit of during the 13/14 season.
Personally I feel Obertan is our only ‘real’ right winger and playing him on the left instead of Aarons is a terrible idea. Would rather have kept Cabella who is now a year more experienced and used the money to go towards bringing in a top quality cb.

Comment #28My biggest reservation about signing Thauvin is that it will be at the expense of upgrading our back line.
If, and it’s a big IF, he can regain his form and confidence, as he was appalling last season in France, he could do a job, but it seems our priorities are all wrong in the players we are trying to sign as the biggest flaws in the squad are still there and don’t look like being addressed. There will come a point and Thauvin could be that point where there is no more money to spend and to be honest we haven’t really done that much to plugs the obvious gaps

Comment #29Not that I am not grateful of another first team signing coming in. But I do find it very strange why Nufc have continued there pursuit of Thauvin to great lengths .
This position to everyone is not exactly a position we need strengthening .
We could have kept Cabella, gave him another season while the development of Aarons continues. Which frees up the fee sanctioned for a much needed Defender.

Comment #32How can anyone complain about a player joining. The only similarities between Thauvin and Cabella are that they are both French. Ones a proper winger the other plays in no 10 role. A club that’s been deprived it’s supporters of signings and these very people are now twisting over signing someone who’s replacing a serious dud from last season.
Yes we need defenders but also need goal providers and the lads a set piece taker something we are massively lacking

In 2013 Thauvin was regarded as having the most potential in French football, his star was rising and people talked about a massive future ahead of him.
In the 2014/15 season he was voted in the worse 11 in French football and the back end of the 2013/14 season wasn’t anything to right home about either and we are paying up to 15 million for the lad?
Don’t think people would mind to much if the rest of the team was sorted but it’s far from that right now.
