Newcastle United will go into the second round tie with Northampton Town tomorrow night at St. James’ Park with their eyes wide open, and they know that Northampton are a threat and they will not be taken lightly.
For the first time in a long while Newcastle are taking the two cup competitions seriously this season, and the easier one to win is the League Cup – the Capital One Cup – which is tomorrow night.
Steve McClaren – positive at press conference today
Steve McClaren has said he will play his strongest team against Northampton, while taking into account we played at Old Trafford last Saturday and on Saturday we host a strong Arsenal team at home.
This is some of what Steve McClaren said at his press conference today when asked how seriously he was taking the game:
“Very seriously.” “It can give you a great boost for you.” “Nobody wants to lose a football match, they would put a team out that can win that game.” “That’s what we will be doing.”
“We will be putting our strongest team possible out.” “We will take into account there was a game Saturday and one to come this Saturday.” “And taking into account we have a very good squad.”
“But tomorrow night’s team will be strong enough and good enough to win the game – the attitude has to be right though.” “They are a good team.” “We have been watching them.” “They are physical, strong and put in lots of crosses.”
“Any team that plays football on their day can beat anybody else, no matter what division.” “If we are not right and we don’t do it right it we’ve said it’s not about the opponent it will be about ourselves.”
“If our attitude is good and we start the game well we will be OK – ii we don’t Northampton are a team that can hurt you.”
Newcastle will make some changes and give some starts to players like Karl Darlow, Siem de Jong and Rolando Aarons – but it should still be a strong enough team to ensure we get through to the next round – which is all that matters really.
Here is almost five minutes audio of what Steve had to say today.

Comment #2I would personally go 442 for this. Cisse and Perez.
But then if schteve wants everyone to get use to the 4231 system that would make sense. Keeping all our our alternate players match fit and giving them more experience is wise.

Comment #4“They are physical, strong and put in a lot of crosses”. Let’s hope our mate Colo is one of the changes then. He may do ok against the impotent attack of Man U that played on the deck in front of us but he will get shown up against some League 2 battlers.

Comment #5Ashley’s plan is finally coming to fruition. Those impatient and imprudent toerags that wanted us to spend money before we had generated it are being served a jumbo slice of humble pie. The imprudent and impatient toerags aren’t successful like Mikey because of those very qualities, amongst others

I’m a long time lurker. Kept schtum knowing it would all become apparent eventually and now is the time to put it up the gobby gits and make them realise the error of their ways.
Ashley is the clubs saviour, the figurehead that has seen us through rough seas and now directs us toward a bountiful shore on the horizon.

Coloccini isn’t pathetic in the air – it is a weak part of his game because of his height.
You and I are pathetic in the air he is a pro footballer who is sometimes out jumped in a game.

Comment #17JIB, lets face it Colo has had one half decent showing in 2 years, he’s well past it. Cant believe some people have tried to use a solitary clean sheet as some kind of evidence that Colo is a colossus and the best defender of his generation. He’s crap, deal with it. McClarens comments saying they couldnt find anyone better than him to bring in shows how poor Carr is at scouting defenders rather than how good Colo is.
Anyone over 5’9″ can outjump him and anyone quicker than Willo can turn him and put him on his arse.

Actually I know this is massivelly big headed but i think i would win 90% of aerial duels with coloccini.
