The Netherlands have managed to lose four of their eight game in Group A and amazingly lost both their game in the last International break when they were beaten at home 1-0 by Iceland and on the road in Turkey 3-0.
It was not a good first two games for the new head coach Danny Blind.
Gini Wijnaldum – it will be difficult for the Netherlands
The Netherlands are now 4th top of their group with just 10 points and they are 2 points behind Turkey.
They have to finish in 3rd place in order to have any chance of qualifying through the playoffs and today they play at Kazakhstan with Turkey at the Czech Republic.
Iceland and the Czech Republic have already qualified on 19 points each from their eight games.
Newcastle have Wijnaldun, Anita and Krul in the Netherlands squad with Daryl Janmaat having to withdraw earlier this week with a knee injury, but it´s hoped he will fit to play against Norwich next Sunday.
This is what Gini Wijnaldum has said about the upcoming games:
“After the World Cup we turned back to Holland with a lot of confidence as we finished third in the tournament.
“Everybody in Holland thought (after) the first round we were going home, but we made it to the semi-final.”
“We had a good feeling about the road to the Euros, but we didn’t play how we played in the World Cup.”
“Now we must wait on Turkey and hope they lose against the Czech Republic.” “We’re going to see. We can’t control that.”
“We can control our own performance with the Dutch team. We have to win two games.” “We must look at ourselves and hope Turkey will lose.”
With Turkey being 2 points ahead, the Dutch have to hope that Turkey lose points and they have a tough game at the Czech Republic – although they have already qualified and may field a weakened side.
Turkey have another tough home game on Tuesday at home to Iceland – so they are playing the two top teams and that gives the Netherlands some hope of still making the playoffs.
The Netherlands are home to the Czech Republic on Tuesday so they must win their game today at Kazakhstan and that could even get them through.
The goal differences of both countries are similar so it could be touch and go on who makes the playoffs from Group A.
