Stoke City midfielder Stephen Ireland was on loan at Newcastle back in January of 2011 when he was at Aston Villa and he was injured so much he played only two games for us before he was sent back to Villa with another injury.
There is a report today in talkSPORT that Newcastle are interested in signing Stephen in the January transfer window along with his former club Aston Villa.
Stephen Ireland while on loan at Newcastle in 2011
It’s always worrying when we are linked with players other relegation clubs are also said to be after – because that basically means they are not top players.
But that seems to be the club Newcastle have become over the last few years, because of a lack of ambition and a lack of investment.
A mediocre side struggling to stay in the Premier League – we can only hope things will improve (big time) next year.
Stephen has had a lot of injury problems in his career and he is currently out with a hamstring problem, but he is a very good technical player with good creativity.
His career looked very promising when he was at Manchester City until 2010, but it’s been unsuccessful these last few years and he has played for Stoke since 2013.
His former boss at Manchester City – Mark Hughes – brought him to Stoke initially one a loan move in the summer of 2013 before making the move permanent in January of 2014.
The 29-year-old has not started a Premier League game all season and the reports are that he could be a loan target for Newcastle.
We’d be very surprised if we have any interest in bringing Ireland to Newcastle next month.
What do you think?

Comment #8Id keep De jong in, his starting has resulted in 7 points from 9 and even though he hasn’t set the world alight he has experience and leadership but it must be tempting to play gini #10 and thauvin wide!

Take a step away from the plonk, it’s for the best. There’s plenty time yet and I’m sure IanToon needs you to preserve that braincell so he can follow your lead on how to do a more gritty, thick Geordie, should he so be inclined after your great, persuasive input.

Comment #15Not criticising Geordies, but obviously it takes a level of comprehension and/or honesty beyond your capabilities to see that. Suppose you share Pardew’s view that Geordies are on the whole uneducated, and you must like it that way, because you’re right there to try and boink on the head anybody that is seemingly contrary to that description. Make you feel inferior does it? Must do to give rise to such unprovoked anger. You’re the one being insulting to Geordies, saying a father of another poster would be embarrassed because his son isn’t fitting in to your narrow Geordie stereotype. Think about it, actually don’t, might hurt yourself.

What do you base that on ?
He played less than an hour for us in total !
He’s a bit of a tool , but as a footy player he always seemed OK to me , esp when he was with city.
He’s been out since Feb 2015 since Maynor Figueroa did this to him

Comment #24Ian Toon (aka Norman Bates) -I’ve read your initial post twice and still don’t know what the hell you are on about.
More poncey gobbledygook.
Have you been at the sherry decanter?
A saving grace for this festive period is that you’ve stopped using that crap phrase you were constantly trying to coin on the blog :-
“Maccas’ bwave new world”.
Now be a bwave soldier and stop your blog mischief.

He ranks among the growing number of Carr’s crap signings.

Comment #27It’s only Ashley’s Newcastle United that could be in such a mess, lacking in depth of quality players yet still chase signings om the cheap.
The sooner Ashley slings his hook the better.

He came to us from Villa in Jan 2011 until the Spring , no fee , and Villa paid most of his wages.
He arrived injured but he had a major falling out with Gerard Houllier so they sent him to us to keep out of the way, he really came to us to recuperate and get the odd last 10 minute cameo.
It was a no brainer , he cost us sfa and he was a midfielder with PL experience.
As I said before he was a bit of a tool and used to party hard with Leon Best but so what !
