There is a report in The Sun today that Spurs are hoping to sign Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama, and the news is that Andros Townsend could be going the other way in a part exchange deal.
Tottenham have wanted the former Celtic midfielder for some time now and maybe using Andros Townsend as bait for the deal cna get them the 24 year-old Kenyan International.
Andros Townsend – Saints in for him
As we reported earlier today the Saints have expressed an interest in the England International winger, after Newcastle have been trying to negotiate a fee for the England winger over the last few weeks but cannot reach an agreement with Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy.
Southampton are said to have entered the race for Townsend last week – after they snapped up Charlie Austin from QPR on a £4M deal – a Newcastle striker target since last summer.
Newcastle are reported to have had a £10M bid turned down for Townsend but Levy wants £14M and it could be the London club could get Wanyana with Townsend going the other way – and it would be a good deal for Spurs.
There was also news yesterday that a fee had been agreed for Townsend and in one of the 24 year-old’s tweets last night after he played for the Spurs U21 seemed to suggest he was leaving the London club.
But we were hoping it was for Newcastle and not the Saints.
Newcastle could still get the deal done and we hope that happens, but if Southampton beat us again at the last moment to one of our targets – it will be egg on the face of the Newcastle recruitment team – that’s for sure.
We really hope that doesn’t happen.
At the very least it’s a worrying development for a club in the relegation zone, after five months gone in the season.

Comment #3Pochettino identifying the better players and getting rid of the dross. The Andros.
Charnley and Carr failed in July 2015. The indications are they will do so again.

Comment #4Remy and Townsend in and i’ll class this window as a success.
Still dosn’t make up for the fact this should of been sorted last summer.
I think Townsend is Sissoko’s replacement also aswell as Saivet being Tiote’s. If Sissoko dosn’t leave this window he is off in the summer I think.
CB and LB this summer with some competition added and we could be looking OK so long as nobody leaves and isn’t replaced. That would be the 3 window overhaul.

Comment #5Remy, although a very good player will always follow the money.
His decision making process will only consist of three criteria
1. Money
2. Money
3. Want playing time to get in french Euro squad
and oh yeh…nearly forgot….the money!

Townsend has had 4 decent games in his professional career. Most of the time hi isn’t interested, looks a lot faster than he is, shoots from anywhere (usually ending in RowZ) and he believes he is better than he is!

Absolutely spot on. Pochettino is a smart cookie.
Another 10M for that dross is inexcusable by our clowns, having already blown fortunes in fees and wages on Cabella, Thauvin, Riviere, Haidara, DeJong, Marv, Obertan etc, the list goes on.
We definitely need a quick goal scorer, step forward Remy, but we certainly don’t need Townsend.
Or if Townsend goes to Soto we should be in for sadio mane.

Comment #11There’s plenty of good players out there who have fallen foul of not suiting a new managers system and been ‘surprisingly’ sold off.
I think Townsend will surprise a few of us if played right

Comment #12Ed. Egg on the face of NUFC for NOT being mugged of to the tune of 14M for a gamble?? I dont think the lad is as bad as some say, but he needs to a lot more in his career if he wants to be pulling those kind of numbers. He might well be a good fit here, but not at 14M

Comment #15Well,if Macca, penfold and carr all get sacked, then i suppose, when it continues to all go wrong, we will blame the person who orders on the crisps. As long as we dont blame Mashley, because it’s never his fault.

I class the major problem at the minute as not being able to put the ball in the net.
If we get this forward in I very much doubt we will be relegated. I don’t think we have been playing woeful, more like we just havn’t been taking our chances infront of goal.
Shelvey, Saivet, Townsend and Remy on loan should be enough I’d think.

Without improving our defence, that means we’ll ship a minimum of 15 goals between now and the end of the season.
We’ll score roughly 20 goals and will most probably draw more than half our remaining games.
At best we’ll finish 16th.
Buy a LB and CB and we could push for 10th.

Comment #2015 points Up for grabs in January, plus the 3rd round fa cup game. The fact that we’re into the last few days if the window still needing a left back, a centre half and a striker shows the total incompetence from top to bottom of this club. The two players we get in, one is a replacement for a bloke who still hasn’t moved yet and the other a replacement fir a bloke who moved over two years ago! Not sure any other club in the pl would treat their fans like idiots and still expect to be in the league season after season.

Comment #22He’s basically worth 14m because Roy Hodgson rated him enough to give him caps… The same roy hodgson who voted that mascherano was better than messi and Ronaldo after both scored 45goals +….

Comment #24By the way, im not really bothered about Townsend as I’ve not seen him do anything that makes me think he’s the answer to our left sided problems but surely the manager, coaches and chief scout knew we had a weakness there in pre season. So why the hell have they not put it right? Most games I’ve seen this season (a lot) it’s been glaringly obvious what we need.
How come the fans know this but the management seem not to?

Comment #26OK I find this one hard to believe. Why would Southampton want Townsend? They have a good manager and are looking to cement themselves in the top half of the table. Austin is going to be a stellar signing for them so why drop the bar to take on Townsend? Newcastle makes much more sense. A club in complete meltdown, clutching at straws, desperate to survive and managed by people who should be nowhere near a PL club.

Comment #28i dont think Townsend gives us anything different to what we have right now, he has no end product, he is more a P45 type of player, runs and runs and runs then shoots

Comment #30Fingers crossed Southampton pull it off, I certainly wouldn’t be disappointed. Anything over 6 mill for this lad shows we are desperate!
We are in the brown stuff, can’t attract players who would improve us so settle for no better than what we already have. As such we’ll never improve and make progress.

Comment #31Townsend is left footed. We are going hard for him because we have no attacking options down our left flank.
Most of our attacks come down the right through Sissoko and Janmaat which makes us very easy to defend against. Dummett is not an attacking threat, Thauvin hasn’t worked and Wijnaldum and Perez need to play behind the striker.
Townsend will better balance the team and will have a bigger effect than most think.

Comment #32It will be fun and games on the Soton fan sites if this block does end up there. They’ll be livid. I post there because I’m from Guernsey although I make my affiliations known. I’ve copped it this week from them over Austin, (plus our signings of Shelvey and Saivet and the possibility of Townsend.) Don’t think it will happen to be honest but I’m hoping!

Comment #3412 million for a player they didn’t even want… good for spurs annoying for us… I assume he will be playing out on the left which I guess means less playing time for Pérez … especially if we get another striker
