Newcastle Interested In England International Center-Back

Newcastle United are said to be interested in signing 24 year-old England International center-back Steven Caulker in this summer transfer window.

The news is in the Shields Gazette and we have to remember now that when it says that Newcastle are interested in a player,  that means that Rafa Benitez is interested, since if Rafa does join us permanently (soon) – he will have total control of all football matters at the club.

The 6ft 3ins center-back has just spent some time on loan at Liverpool but he didn’t play any games, and he also didn’t play any games while on loan at Southampton earlier in the season.

Steven started his career at Tottenham, and he is a talented player who perhaps Rafa Benitez could turn into a good player with his coaching methods.

Rafa knows a good player when he sees one.

It looks like Steven Caulker’s  contract at QPR runs for another two years, so we would have to pay a fee for the Englishman.

Steven played for the England Youth sides and 5 times for Great Briton in the 2012 Olympic Games and he has one cap for England.

Caulker has potential and maybe Rafa thinks he can bring the best out of the defender.

He has been at Tottenham, Cardiff and QPR on a permanent basis, but has played on loan at several clubs and he has a total of 210 first team appearances with 10 goals so far in his career.

Steven Taylor is expected to be released this summer when his contract runs out, although there is some news in the local papers today he could get an extension.

But that has to be very doubtful because of his poor injury record and also his display at Southampton in that first half was horrendous.

And we have been linked with 31 year-old free agent Daniel Agger,  who is still the captain of Denmark and is out of contract at Danish club Brondby this summer.

Of those three center-backs we’d take Daniel Agger, who is massively experienced and is a leader on and off the pitch.

Rafa knows him well since he signed him from Brondby when he was at Liverpool.

What do you think?

Always rated Caulker would be a great signing for us. And he even scores a few from corners.

You have to wonder why a player who was performing well enough 3yrs ago that he got an England cap has failed to make it into a QPR team who were struggling and got relegated , Cardiff got relegated when he was the captain, failed to get much game time at Southampton when on loan and was played as an emergency striker once this season by Liverpool. My gut tells me he is trouble or has a really bad attitude and we have had a shed load of those types.. Do we really need another.?

never rated caulker as he seems to panic with the ball at his feet. more of an athlete than a ball player and has he not now been relegated with 2/3 different clubs? However, i wasn’t previously enamoured with Townsend, so perhaps Caulker could also pleasantly surprise me.

I think it’s quite likely we will be looking at a few stopgap defenders until the winter window when our future should be clearer.
When we went to Hillsborough in the Championship on the boxing day 2009 we were 8 points clear at the top of WBA in 2nd place.

If we can emulate that season we will be in a position to go for our original targets like Matip and Westergaard.

Incidentally we rammed the Leppings lane end that day with 6000 supporters plus many more dotted around the stadium posing as home fans.
The match was crap ( 2-2 – Sheff Wed dragged us down to their level ) but we had a good laugh singing a lot of dubiously worded Xmas carols !

It was hardly just the southampton game, ST was absolutely abysmal at home v Bournemouth.

All the experience, badge kissing and playing the geordie card in the world can’t mask the fact ST turns slower than a tugboat and has the positional sense of a lemming.

The most insane thing is ST gets 250k a year ”loyalty” bonus, despite being a virtual permanent overweight sicknote. Yes ST talks the talk but if he hadn’t played those crucial 2/3 games instead of Lascelles we may not be going to Rotherham and Burton.

If keeping one of ST or MBabu it’s a total no-brainer.

From previous on Sissoko. Personally I would like to see the back of him and he can take Collo with him. But if Rafa thinks he is captain material and wants to keep him well whose to argue.

Should of signed him when he left Spurs

I think he’s a good play good enough for the Championship certainly and certainly an upgrade on Saylor

Also the Agger link was faked by a bloke on Twitter he made it up and stick a Spanish (I think) paper name to it, no one checked and they just ran with it, there was no original piece saying it

Caulker is useless every team he’s been with since Spurs has been relegated. Taylor is better than him

Until Rafa signs ( after a budget agreed) all of alleged first signings are just that alleged. Even a free transfer requires a wage negotiation so all we have is press conjecture on his possible targets.

I see no reason to doubt that he is working on identifying players to bring in and to keep but surely the budget will need to be agreed before anything concrete can happen.

On Taylor – on a new wage and if he could be guaranteed fit for more than half season he might be worth another shot especially as he has experienced Championship . However his performance against Southampton is still very fresh in my mind (rather than the Spurs one where he was ok) but I will trust in Rafa’s judgement on this one and of course all others 🙂
