Benitez Makes A Surprisingly Positive Claim About Newcastle

Newcastle United are 5/2 to win the SkyBet Championship next season on SkyBet and 4/5 odds on to be promoted, so there is a big danger that our players will be over-confident and think it’s all going to be so easy.

That would be a huge mistake and manager Rafa Benitez is already aware of that danger and will certainly not let the Newcastle players be complacent.

In fact Newcastle will be the top glamour team of the Championship next season and every game is going to be tough with the opposition only too willing to get the scalp of Newcastle United – so to speak.

Rafa Benitez – we can be a top side in England

One key to being a good football team and a winning team is to respect every team you play and that will be what Rafa will be drumming into the heads of the players in pre-season – amongst other things.

This is what the Newcastle manager has said in the Chronicle today:

“I think we can be one of the top sides in England – but we have to be sure we approach this next season with the right mentality.”

“It will require hard work, intensity, the same passion and the same commitment we saw in the last games of last season. We can’t think the job is done just because we have a fantastic club and fantastic fans.”

“We have to be sure we work as hard as anybody in the division. If we play against better players we must work as hard as them and we’ll win games.”

“It’s different when you are a top side, you know the opposition will be trying their very best against you. When you’re a small team it’s different.”

“When I was at Extremadura I knew because we were at the bottom of the league we’d have to approach every game like a final. We didn’t have too many options.”

“Now it’s the opposite, because Newcastle have come into the Championship, teams will be trying their very best against us.”

“So we already know that and we have to be ready.”

When Rafa says we can be one of the top sides in England we are assuming he means that for next season – even though we are in the second division.

One test of that will be how we do in the two local cups – the League Cup and the FA Cup – and if we can keep all our best players and bring some new ones in there’s no reason why we cannot have a very good side next season.

It’s going to be very interesting to see how well the season tickets sell – but with a 10% reduction in prices and the likelihood we can do very well next season, they may even sell out like hot cakes.

We hope so, because that will only help the team at St. James’ Park where we can get a lot of wins if we have over 50,000 fans in the stadium.

And we have been so starved of wins over the last two seasons – we had only 9 wins all of last season and had to wait nine games for our first win – and  three of the wins came in the last six games.

That 5-1 win against Tottenham on the final day of the season was indicative of what can happen if we are all get behind  Rafa Benitez and the club.

It all augers well for the future and that could turn out be a big understatement.

Nahki Wells? Surely Adam Armstrong’s a far better goalscorer and all round player compared to Wells. How many times have you seen Wells or the other players you mention?

Sky were trumpeting at half-time between Plymouth and Wimbledon yesterday , that , they will be showing 126 FL72 games live next season.
I’m guessing a fair few will feature us.

I hope so jib, and not just the home games with the big crowds, I’m hoping they cover more than a few away games too so I can see them if I’m not there ( selfish I know but hopefully correct)
