This Player To Become Newcastle’s Seventh Summer Signing?

Newcastle have been linked with Spurs midfielder Alex Pritchard for some time now and Newcastle were listed as favorites to sign the player only a couple of days ago.

Other Championship clubs including Leeds United and Wolves are interested in the play-maker and Swansea City and Middlesbrough from the Premier League would also like to sign Alex.

Pritchard is available for transfer after Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said he was surplus to requirements and can leave the club after the 23 year-old was not included in the Spurs squad that jetted off for their tour of Australia last Friday night.

23 year-old Spurs midfielder Alex Pritchard

Newcastle are trying to get the midfielder to Tyneside,  but it seems one problem could be the fee which is listed at £8M or £9M depending on which reports you believe.

Lee Charnley is busy trying to get a good deal for the England U-21 International.

Rafa Benitez said Newcastle were close to some singings last Tuesday night after the 2-0 win at Southend United, but nothing much seems to have materialized over the last three days – at least not in the news.

But Alex has to be one who we are close to signing and he could well become the 7th summer signing for Rafa Benitez.

Here’s some information we have built up on the 23 year-old:

  • He was born in Orsett in Essex
  • Pritchard began his career in the West Ham Academy, but then transferred to the youth setup at Tottenham Hotspur in June 2009
  • He was on loan at Peterborough for half a season in early 2013 and made 6 appearances
  • Alex then had a loan spell at Swindon in 2013-2014 making 44 appearances and scoring 6 goals
  • He was on a season-long loan to Brentford in the 2014-2015 season and played 45 league games scored 12 goals
  • Alex was named in the Championship Team of the Year in 2015
  • The Englishman has been capped 9 times for the England U-21 side

What do you think?

The one nailed on certainty for Fulham has got to be Lascelles.
Good news on the Pritchard front if it’s true.

So looks as though Thauvin is holding out for a move back to Marseille, dont they have anyone else in their ranks we could swap?

Apparently we’ve had a bid rejected for Bristol’s Anthony Knockaert. I think he will be good for us.

On Pritchard he would be good also. Good young British talent we’re going after.

    Apparently Sissoko is that man.
    Transfer is expected this weekend.

Looks good, hope he signs, and if he does, I hope he doesn’t turn out to be another Gosling (Whom I also rated prior to him signing, and has a similar record)

Hibbit, I dont see why we need a new Lb. We have Dummett, Haidara there and Gamez, Mbabu, Anita, Colback can all cover if need be.

Tbf gosling was scuppered when we bought him, back in the days when we used to go scratching around in the broken biscuits tin. Trouble with nasty injuries and ailmemts like the ones with gosling, marveaux, SDJ, Good, and even Haidara and Cisse, is that while they may not longer be career-enders due to better medical tech, they still tend to seriously crimp the physique and potential of those they affect.

WWSBRD, I feel Dummetts more suited to LB, and has played there effectively for us on many occasions. Mbabu and Gamez while both RBs seems to have the ability to play on either side, and wouldnt perform poorly if asked to play there. I admit Anita and Colback are stretches, but they would be 5th, 6th choice LBs in our current squad anyway.

If we were still in the PL i’d say buy a Lb to upgrade on what we have, but as we are in the Championship what we have should be more than good enough for this level. Wait a year than buy a top class Lb when we get back to the Prem.

Jail’s suggesting we don’t need to replace the broken ornaments while Tsunki reckons we no longer scratch around in the broken biscuits tin. What about a speedy car booty pitch side at half time to boost the commercial revenues?

For me a left back who can attack and defend should have been a priority especially for playing at home!

We will dominate games where teams will park the bus and will often need the full backs to the space out wide!

Nar Dummett is terrible at LB imo good CB but never a LB

We could attract a good LB now so why wait?

Knockaert would give us some real flair and creativity. Along with Pritchard.

Thing is, we need a left back, but we’re gonna have 6 full backs? People going on about Mbabu as a huge prospect, how is he going to get a game? Shouldn’t we just loan him? Sterry is obviously ahead of him, and imo has looked better. Janmaat and Gamez also at RB, and he won’t really get a game at LB as Gamez/Haidara/Dummett can play there

WWSBRD, Im sure we could still attract a good LB but more than likely if we get promoted we’ll be able to attract an even better one. That being said I wouldnt object to a young promising Lb coming in, I think Rico Henry we’ve been linked to? I just feel the wings and probably even CB need strengthening more than other positions right now

    Jul 29, 2016 at 12:00 PM

Possibly true but we are a weaker team right now unless we bring a LB in imo

Henry can come in great but only if he is ready to be our first team LB haha

We need a few players still but no reason we can’t get what we need now

Dummett is a very decent backup at centre half. Read the game well, competes in the air even though he isn’t tall for a centre half, tackles well, and is quick once turned. Re left back, we have more pressing concerns in terms of creativity further up the pitch. also, its early days, but Gayle doesn’t seem to be having a great pre season. if he doesn’t fire, we have an issue, as things stand.

Is it a possibility that we could attract a better quality of player in January? If we are in the top two, possibly three, those players who have ambitions to be in the PL will be more approachable. That being said, the existing squad minus Sissoko would be required to play out of their skins to get us into that position.

I still think we could do with a good LB. Many people have listed the possible options. I would go for Charlie Taylor first and then either Rico Henry or Andy Robertson.

If people had to choose between Knockaert or Pritchard with both costing the same price – who would people go for and why?

My answer would Pritchard because he played 51 games in the championship and scored 12 goals and had 9 assists. This compares to Knockaert’s 103 games, 18 goals and 20 assists. I know it’s close on these statistics but I think Pritchard just shades it

If thauvin and Sissoko leave, get both!
IF only one of them leaves then i’d go for Pritchard probably.

i would prefer the focus to be on getting creative attacking players in rather then a left back right now.
dummett is’nt a bad left back, not the greatest going forward but then again the whole side was crap going forward last year, haidara is due back mid -late august and there are a few other players who could do the job at a push, dummett and haidara might be the best lb in this league with confidence, they might not…but they have dropped down a league and were steady enough to play in the premier, granted haidara sparingly…but unless a willems or robertson suddenly become available..would dummett, haidara, mbabu, gamez not be at least as good as taylor, rico henry?….i havent seen these players, but teams are not climbing over each other to get them so the must be some hesitation about them.

    Left back-Charlie Taylor (£7million)
    Winger-Anthony Knockaert (£9million)
    Attaking mid-Alex Pritchard (£7million)
    Attacking mid/Striker-Fernando Forrestieri (£8million)
that covers all the positions that Rafa wants strengthening
total: £31m + £37.5m already spent which is around £70mil spent

    Florian Thauvin (£15million)
    Moussa Sissoko (£30million)
    Yoan Gouffran (£1million)
    Tim Krul (£8million)
    Emmanuel Riviere (£2million
total: £56million + around £45million we’ve already got from Cabella/Townsend/Wijnaldum, £100million recouped on selling players.
Around £30mil net spend, and i’d say we’d have a squad that is capable of winning the championship

    Lindisfarne @ 28

I very much doubt any player of quality would risk moving to a Championship club in the January transfer window even if that team were in the top six of the Championship.

Past history of the Championship has shown that teams in the top six in January do not always get promoted.

JamesToon – you must be smoking crack if you think we can get 15 million for Thauvin. I’d be over the moon and very surprised if we can get closer to 10 million for him. He’s surely depreciated in value since we signed (or ‘singed’ as Ed likes to say) him, not increased in value?

@26, with regard to the Gayle comments, I agree, he hasn’t looked great for us yet, however, as these are friendlies, nor am I too concerned about it. For perspective, I remember 2 or 3 players looking world class in friendlies, then being absolutely hapless in our first team, most notably Xisco (when played left wing), Daniel Cordone, and Jon Dahl Tomasson (Who to be fair was played out of position in the league). A good or bad pre-season display does not necessarily make or break a player.
