23 year-old Florian Thauvin had a terrible time of it at Newcastle in the six months he was on Tyneside, before he forced a loan move back to his former club Marseilles.
Last summer was the first time Florian had left France and it looks like he was home-sick and couldn’t get back quickly enough and that must have also hampered the efforts to have him settle on Tyneside.
Florian Thauvin in pre-season training at Newcastle
There was news yesterday that Newcastle turned down a bid from Lazio for the French winger, because the bid was far below the valuation Newcastle have on Florian.
We paid around £13M for him last August and it has tuned out to be a terrible acquisition by Graham Carr – and Newcastle will be trying to recoup as much of that£13M fee as possible.
Today the French daily L’Equipe are reporting that Florian Thauvin is putting some pressure on Newcastle to get a deal done with Marseille, rather than Lazio.
That’s not too surprising because if he moves to Rome how different an experience would that be with Florian going to (yet) another country where he cannot speak the language and the culture is so different from his native France?
He’s still well aware of the disaster his move to England and Newcastle was last summer
And there’s a different story in the local Marseille paper Provence, who are reporting that Florian is frustrated at how long Marseilles are taking to put together a deal to Newcastle to take him back.
But Newcastle will only allow Thauvin to leave Newcastle on their terms and it’s not clear that Marseille can put a good enough deal together that will be acceptable to Newcastle.
Earlier in the summer the French club were really short of money, but they have since sold Belgium striker Michy Batshuayi to Chelsea for an initial £33M and Benjamin Mendy was sold to Monaco on a five year deal.
And Tottenham agreed yesterday to an £11m deal for Marseille winger Georges-Kevin Nkoudou.
So the financial situation at Marseille is improving, but it remains to be seen if they can either buy Florian outright this summer or put together a loan deal with an option to buy.
The loan deal is what Lazio offered, but the terms were not agreeable to Newcastle.
From what we can tell the chances of Thauvin returning to Marseille do not appear good.
What do you think?

Comment #1Not convinced, seems to flinch every challenge, so I doubt he will ever be suitable for British football.

Comment #10Is he taking the piss out of riviere in that pic?
There is no point in loaning him out when we will have to buy a replacement anyways, just cut our losses on him he obviously isn’t cut out for English football or more probable his missus isn’t cut out for the English weather

Comment #12Somebody told an It’s A Knockout/Knockaert joke earlier and I was filled with warm, fuzzy memories of being a kid, until I remembered that Stewart Hall ended up in prison. And then it reminded me that I wrote to Jim’ll Fix It back in the early 80’s for me and my best mate to do the Krypton Factor assault course. Was gutted at the time that I didn’t get picked. F***ing lucky escape in the end, wasn’t it?
What’s this got to do with football? Ummm, Adam Johnson was a kiddy fiddler too. There, brought it back to footy. You’re welcome.

Comment #14Just seen martinez is fav for hull job that’s them guaranteed to go down I’d put some bids in for Robertson, maguire and snodgrass, would sort the squad out quite a bit and all of them know the league well plus they know they already on a sinking ship

Comment #16YCMIU Sportsdevil seems consistent, however, the add on is updated all the time. There are a few others worth looking at, however, it’s worth joining one of the Kodi sports forums on facebook if you want the latest and greatest. My advice would be to download and install ‘Ares Wizard’ (there are some usefull websites showing how), and use an established build within it such as ‘Apollo’ or ‘The Beast’ and it should meet all your sports and movie requirements.

Comment #17manxpie – what makes you say that? I know he got relegated with Wigan once, but he also won the FA Cup with them too. So he’s more of a mixed bag rather than a guaranteed disaster. Hull’s problem lies at the ownership level rather than their managers. It’s a miracle Bruce was able to get them promoted and a telling sign of bigger problems when he walked away after getting them up.

Comment #18YCMIU – yes, that was it. It’s all your fault. I’m gutted that they’re not showing the Top Of The Pops repeats on the iPlayer that feature Saville, Dave Lee Travis and the other fiddlers too. Again, what’s this got to do with football? Errrmmm, Hoddle and Waddle appeared on TOTP. There, sorted.

Comment #19Paul he flirted with relegation many more times tho, plus had a great squad with everton and massively underachieved Bruce had Wigan mostly safe as houses in the league and as you say hulls owner is mad and that’s why I think it isn’t a gd mix
