Here are the highlights of today’s terrific 2-0 win against Brighton & Hove Albion for those around the world who couldn’t get the game live.
We notice that happens a lot this season.
🙁
Both goals came from set plays!
Who is that Yoan Gouffran – what a terrific strike after 24 minutes that hit the cross-bar – Rafa has made him into a new player.

Comment #2That was probably one of the best performances seen at SJP in 3 – 4 years. We looked more than capable, very composed and we played as a team. We even knocked it about for what seemed like 5 minute without them ever touching the ball.
Anita – Un-Pardewed
Goufran – Un-Pardewed
Summer – Un-Pardewed
What a brilliant afternoon.

Comment #3knockaert didn’t even try to get past dummett in the second half btw he turned inside just past the halfway line everytime
so again the people who say they went to every game who say he gets skinned every time has he totally improved in a week?
just asking as i have never seen him get skinned apart from a couple of times in a few games

Comment #4It looks like the team is starting to play the way Rafa wants them too which is a hard working team who are compact and solid at the back who will suffocate the other team! It then allows us to play a more expansive game some of our moves in the first half were excellent and we should have been out of sight before half time!
Apart from Knockers who had some moments Brighton looked pretty average would anyone else in their team get in ours ? Maybe Dunk but that would be it and this was us without Gayle and Mitrovic as well!
Once we get Yedlin and Lazaar on either flank we can properly batter teams from each side with pace

Really? Oh god, this is what happens when we let the squads hairdresser go I suppose
Don’t worry lads, I’m sure that Rafa has a top notch Italian hairdresser lined up before the window closes.

in fairness Dummett had one of his better games today. for knockaerts first shot at goal dummett gave him too much space on the byline which very well should have ended in a goal
the fact is we can do better than him, and most fans see it that way

Comment #14Dummett having a good game is symptomatic of what happens when you have competition for places and a manager who is not scared to drop anyone. It’s a breath of fresh air from the “Pardew Favourites” years

Comment #16yeah you could definitely see the change in style and brighton did well really in disrupting it by hoofing everywhere and then the ref by giving them fouls everytime
but the movement and passing was great and we are only gonna improve and to think our “star” player hasn’t kicked a ball lol

Comment #17GK – Sels, Darlow, Elliot
RB – Anita, Gamez, Yedlin Sterry
CB – Lascelles, Mbemba, Hanley, Clark
LB – Lazaar, Dummett, Haidara,
CM – Hayden, Shelvey, Diame, Colback
RW – Ritchie,
LW – Gouffran, Aarons,
ST – Gayle, Mitro, Perez, Murphy
Still 2 wingers needed with Aarons injury record. A top quality one and a young/cheap/loan one.
Not sure Tiote will be away either. Seems like he’s been in the shadows for a long time. Would love to now what has really been going on with him.
Looking how well stocked we are at RB and given he came on there tonight, could see Yedlin being converted to a RW.

Comment #19sorry matty but i can’t say for previous games as i haven’t seen them but every time i have seen dummett he hasn’t let much past him and most is in the prem and every player gets done once
it’s just the statement that “dummett gets skinned easily” i dont believe unless it is only in the last 5 games it has happened? and today it didn’t

Our best victories in the last few years have been when Anita has played not always because of him but he does contribute and I really like him at right back
Yedlin is rapid though it will offer something different but Anita will play plenty of games this season I hope he gets a new deal for a season or 2
Colback worries me though he just looks so average and gives away so many fouls the passing and moving between Shelvey , Hayden , Anita , Diame and Richie was excellent and Colback just doesn’t seem capable of that kind of play
Would love us to get Mccarthy as part of the Sissoko deal haha

If all u want from a LB is that they stand still, have very limited ability to pass, have little to no ball control and have a touch of height then Dummett is ur man

Comment #27Dummett has improved because he has finally been reined in to doing his day job at last, at which he is reasonably good when he isn’t lumping aimless punts up the wing. 9 passes from Perez says it all, he’s too lightweight and can’t hold onto the ball, still waving his arms and shrugging his shoulders.
I hope the Shelvey of the last two games is the one we will continue to have. The FK simply removed all the Brighton players from the pitch and invited them to come back on when it was finished lol.
Diame is taking his time to get fit. He’s OK atm but he needs to get up to speed, he could be a real dynamo going forward.
Sels had what I would call a pretty decent game, good saves, did well to get his man sent off ha ha not the calamity I though he was shaping up to be.
Good work all round, only down side was Colback changed the dynamic and made it look like 10 v 10 last 15 minutes.

Comment #28We won’t have set players for all the games.
It’s such a long season you need a big squad and thus will prevent so many injuries we have had in previous seasons.
Fully expect Rafa to keep rotating the squad
Great for us as it keeps them fighting for a place

Comment #29ww i want a LB that defends and defends well and then can pass to an actual LW who can move the ball forward
we havent had such since enrique
i know you hate dummett lol but he balances this team more than anyone plus he has not had 1 person to form a relationship with not one!
and tbf rafa likes the same it seems

Comment #30I had draw as an optimistic punt today, was surprised they had their wind blown after the first goal, not at all the driving force Brighton were advertised. Feeling a little more optimistic about us today.

Ha ha thats Mccarthur ! Although he is decent as well!
The story going the rounds is Sissoko to Everton with Mccarthy to us ! Football manager style transfer although hes also been linked to signing with Celtic which would probably be his preferred option I imagine

Comment #32Another improving team game today, and that’s without Mitro and Gayle, our main two up front.
Great to see Gouffran contributing to the team without being slated on here, as he was always better than the workhorse slogging it out in a line up and down the pitch, Jonas style – and Anita, who Rafa is comfortable with playing in a structured team.
Quality manager and we’re seeing a more balanced and fluid side develop.
Shelvey looked a lot more more athletic than usual. More mobile and sharper.
Diame seemed to be involved in a lot and put in another better performance.
The result itself was a very good one. Crowd were very good today as well.
On the Murphy signing, it’s fine as a backup stop-gap if that’s what Rafa thinks. He is a thoughtful and strategic decision. If he couldn’t get others, say Haller or Dost, then what do you do? Go with nobody or get a reliable(?) back up? He’s done just that and got the target man as backup to cover bases.
Main thing is get players in who can do a certain job for the team in a certain way and not miss out on them.
Anyway, a more than decent performance today I thought and great result against one of the top teams.

Comment #33am i wrong to think that with Murphy and Laazar signing, we should probably get another attacking CM?
if Diame is injured, it’s only Perez in the hole (assuming Arma is gone on loan). think Judge would be an astute signing to make…..

Comment #35The Shelvey playing today was similar to the one I saw against Southend which is why I went for him as our MOS.
Covered loads of the pitch and barely a bad pass.
If Goufron had actually converted some of the close misses he’s had he’d be well in for top scorer as well, still time yet!!

U want an actual LB passing to an actual LW but ur answer to that here is to have a CB passing to a LB?
And I really don’t hate Dummett, I actually like him (there’s plenty of post from me in the archives touting him to be a good squad player and one we shouldn’t think of selling) him he’s a good solid CB but he’s awful at LB. he’s a big reason why we were relegated because we had no left side last season (not his fault we played him there but ended in the same way) so every team knew to ignore our left and focus on our right

Comment #40Just got in from match
Absolutely knackered
Great Win
Sh*t ref
Not a Chris Hughton team that I can remember – tried the get in the TOON’s faces kick us instead of playing football.
My MOM was Goufran all over the park today tackled ran shot always available for the pass passed well which freed up space for Shelvey to do his tricks
Not far behind was Shelvey and Diame.
and I thought Perez battled away without much help upfront – did well with the lack of good ball he saw
Anita another good game at full back
Week points none really y – maybe Sells for his command of the six yard box and his punching.
LOOKE A HALF DECENT TEAM TODAY
