Last month there were reports that Newcastle were interested in signing talented 17 year-old Sunderland forward Joel Asoro.
The Black Cats signed Asoro from IF Brommapojkarna in the summer of last year and the youngster made his first team debut against Middlesbrough this season on August 21st, when he came on as a 81st minute substitute.
He has since made only 2 more appearances for Sunderland but made his debut for the Sweden U21 side in September starting the game against Spain in the 1-1 draw and now has three U21 caps.
Not bad for a lad who doesn’t turn 18 until next May.
Joel Asoro – Sunderland’s outstanding young forward
Rafa Benitez is having his scouting team scour Europe for top young talent who could then be coached on Tyneside into first team players – something we haven’t been too successful at over the last several years.
Newcastle are not the only club who have expressed an interest in signing Joel and there a number of top clubs now taking an interest in the talented youngster.
Asoro started his career at his home town club IFK Haninge and then at eleven he moved to IF Brommapojkarna.
That club is well known for its famous Youth Academy which has produced some decent players such as John Guidetti, Albin Ekdal, Simon Tibbling and Ludwig Augustinsson.
Joel was at IF Brommapojkarna for five years before moving to Sunderland last year.
We wouldn’t think David Moyes would be too keen to lose one of his top youngsters on Wearside, but it would also depend on how much Newcastle would be willing to bid for the youngster if we do go after him in January.
And that would depend on just how highly he is rated by manager Rafa Benitez.
The Chronicle this morning have reported Rafa is keen to add some top young talent to the club in January and Joel Asoro is very likely a top target at Newcastle.
What do you think?

Comment #1You never know he might just be tempted to sign for a bigger club.
Boro also have a young lad out on loan, can’t remember who to but he got a hat trick in the last FA cup round.
