Benitez – Missed Opportunity – Disappointment – But We Played Well

It was a difficult game to watch tonight when Newcastle were beaten by a 10 man Hull side when they scored all their 3 penalties in the shoot our and we missed three of the four penalties we took.

Rafa did say after the game that his players had not practiced penalties in preparation for this game (why not?), but he concentrated only on the positives in his post-match comments.

But it was a gut wrenching loss to take when we were so near to making a semi-final.

And we were up against only 10 men in extra time after Dieumerci Mbokani was shown a red card on 89 minutes.

Newcastle players congratulate Mo Diame after his goal

We should really have won this game in extra time and scored early through Mo Diame, but then we let in a sloppy equalizer just over a minute later.

Jonjo Shelvey, Dwight Gayle and Yoan Gouffran all missed their penalties and only on-loan winger Christian Atsu scored –  sign him up!

This is what Rafa said after the game:

“Is it a missed opportunity? Yes, I think so,” “We are disappointed because we played so well. We are out of the competition, but I think we deserved to qualify.”

“The way that we played, I think we deserved to score goals in the first half and deserved to score goals in extra-time. But when we scored the goal, we didn’t manage the situation properly.”

“That is something you can get with experience, and hopefully a match like this will give us that experience and in the future we will do a bit better when we have this kind of advantage. We created so many chances.”

“We can learn a lot for the future from a game like this,” “We played against a Premier League team, away from home, and the team was playing so well.”

“I was pleased at the end of normal time, but I was saying, ‘we have done nothing – we have to score and we have to win’.”

“With one less player for them, we had so much control(in extra-time that it was just a matter of time before we scored.”

“But once we did that, we made a mistake and we allowed them to score.”

“There were a lot of things we can learn, but also a lot of positives because, for me, the team did quite well.”

At least to us this was another gut-wrenching defeat – two defeats in four days – maybe we’ll feel better in the morning.

Rafa did get to see how we gauge against a PL side, albeit a dire one. Lessons learned.

Murphy has played 259 Championship matches with 77 goals. He has had one good season where he managed 27 in 44 in the Championship.

Crosses aren’t working because we are leaving players isolated. Mitro has 2 or 3 marking him when a balk comes in, generally with Perez off him amusing few problems. Gayle struggles in the air against the physical defenders and Diame hasn’t one it in any capacity so far. Nothing would change with Murphy, he may have a better balance of both players attributes, but his level is way below.

Play the pair together and off each other, then you really make defenders think. They can’t swamp Mitro if Gayle is prowling, and they can’t relax with Mitro like they can with Perez and Diame.

Either way we need at least 1 first choice centre forward if we go up. Gayle drops to 3rd choice, Mitro stays second, Murphy out with either Toney (unlikely) or Arma (not best for his development) as back up.

Yes. Oddly we do. We seem to play more long balls as well. It is almost like we have less confidence in Gayle to retain possession and allow us to build play, so we go long and try and stretch play.

yeah sounds about right lilo good spot maybe we should find some middle ground and we’d be flying
the main point tonight is we didn’t play badly but just couldn’t take our chances
i hope we smash forest now at least we have 2 players who will be up for it!

I think we have a similar outlook on the game. I can’t stand it when people don’t put a shift in. Regardless of your talent, effort is the bare minimum. It’s a team game, you have to work together. Just one person not working defensively can drag half the defence out of place and open up gaps.

You can have all the tricks in the world, but if you don’t understand the essence of being part of a team you will never make it to the very top.

    One of my favourite Johann Cruyff quotes;

“Someone who has juggled the ball in the air during a game, after which four defenders of the opponent get the time to run back, that’s the player people think is great. I say he has to go to a circus.”

Substitute juggled with pointless tricks for the more modern footballer.

IMO the reason why we are playing long balls and crosses so much is not about mitro or Gayle but more around our lack of a proper number 10′
We are dominating games and struggling to score
The games we have lost Huddersfield wolves blacburn and tonight all hinged on our inability to make the killer pass .
I am sure Rafa will be looking hard in the window, Perez is our only genuine 10 but is struggling with the physical nature of the championship.
We need a courtinio ,silva type player obviously not this level but this type .

I don’t know what happened with our goal scoring attempts, yes we had a lot on target but some of them were so poor their GK didn’t have to do a lot to save them.

Did Gayle have any decent shots? Shelvy among others ballooned several well over the bar. Hate to say it but we need a proper goal scorer, on this performance we don’t have one.

Time for Murphy to have ago and lets get Armstrong back.

People were saying Shelvey was looking knackered after 65 minutes, I don’t think he did but if he was, he was entitled to be knackered he must have covered every inch of the pitch.

Having said all of that we may well lose on Friday but I’ve confidence we’ll soon be back on track to win promotion well before the end of the season.

And we can still win the FA cup.

Logged in to post this a while back.

Lascelles isnt good enough for the PL.

I don’t see what people see in him?

He was caught out for the goal, we nearly conceded another because of him not being able to win a 70/30 header.

My friend who studies football stats told me about his shocking pass succession and passes made forward.

He’s too sideways and his passing forward is atrocious.
I could of made a montage of bad forward passes tonight.

He’s the 3rd best CB we have at the club and that’s a fact.

Because he’d been slating him from the start, I even joked that I’d bet he’d been slating him from the Leicester game, when I looked back he actually had been. I felt a lot of the crticisim was being done for the sake of it and especially from those that thought Pardews was unfair.

The first priority this season is to achieve promotion, no ifs, no buts.
There were two distractions to that ambition this season, one was the cup competitions, the other is league records!
If, or when, we achieve promotion, the fact that we may not have broken records, (points, goals, goal difference etc etc) will be at the worst a disappointment, but we will be back where we belong.
If we draw Chelsea at the Bridge in January, perhaps for this season only, key players could be rested.
    Remember, promotion is absolute!

The good news is – no way can Mashley turn to Rafa in May and say, you’ve won the Championship at a canter, you’re a genius, now go and do the same with this lot in the Premiership. Tonight showed the level we are at vis a vis the EPL. With little real threat or invention against a very poor Premiership side, its Chequebook time in the summer.

Matz needs to find another sport. I was thinking volleyball, because you don’t have to catch it, but then of course you do have to push it up, not down at the feet of your opponents. I’ve got The Midriff From Madrid running at 0.5/10 this week for selections and tactics, by the way, which is down on his season’s running average of 3/10. Random agreement with recent comments: Lascelles is a plank and a million miles below EPL standard. Ritchie is useless as a right winger. We desperately need a proper no.10.
ps Jib, when you are posting in your cross-dressing mode as jane (not that there’s anything wrong with that) you maybe should make it a little less obvious – unless you enjoy being a figure of ridicule of course, and there’s nothing wrong with that either.

    In truth Ed,
It wasn’t too difficult too watch. Wave after wave of attack, total domination, one team on the field. The ball moving fast. I think I can live with that.

Frustration that we didn’t wrap it up, of course. But this is the fate of big teams. Dominating and sometimes not getting a result.

I’d rather have that every week than the displays when we couldn’t even pass.

We need to learn how to break teams down. That, yes.

BTW, I think this is easily the worst sequence of penalties I’ve ever seen. And I include neighborhood matches when I was 12 🙂

I did wonder why Mitro wasn’t even on the bench.

I guess performances like last night when we had 60% possession and 32 attempts on goal – with only 5 on target – says a lot – and why we need a £30million striker for the PL (assuming we get there).

There is a good reason why top strikers cost money.
