Pundit Predicts Surprising Hull City – Newcastle Result

Pundit Charlie Nicholas is backing Hull to beat Newcastle United tonight in the quarter-final of the League Cup  at the KCOM stadium.

Nicholas thinks the defeat at the weekend against Blackburn has killed off the  huge momentum Newcastle had after winning their nine previous games.

The stadium is likely to be only half full tonight because the fans are in opposition to the owner and some fans have decided to stay away as a protest.

Mike Phelan – Hull City Manager

But Hull City were promoted last season in the playoffs but are struggling in the Premier League and are currently third bottom and hardly in form with one win in their last 11 league games – a 2-1 home win over Southampton.

Hull have beaten Exeter City, Stoke City and Bristol City to get this far in the cup and it should be a close game tonight.

This is what Charlie Nicholas told Sky Sports:

“It does surprise me that Newcastle are favorites to a degree, but talking about Hull, they hardly turned the corner by salvaging a draw against West Brom,”

“The problem for Hull is that they can’t really rest anybody, which is worrying for their Premier League survival hopes, but means they have to pretty much go with their best team here.”

“They seem to be having the most problems with their midfield, Tom Huddlestone dropped and Ryan Mason hauled off at half-time.”

“Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez tried to play it clever by leaving out Dwight Gayle among others at the weekend and it backfired, with a troubling loss killing their momentum.”

“In terms of value, Hull are appealing here as the outsiders in what I see as a tough one to call.”

Charlie’s prediction is a 2-1 home win.

We’re not sure that loss on Saturday killed our momentum completely because the lads will be determined to make up for what were 3 points tossed away in the league last Saturday by some indifferent play.

Rafa will be playing a strong side tonight and those players left out of Saturday’s starting line-up like Vurnon Anita, Jamaal Lascelles, Paul Dummett, Jack Colback, Yoan Gouffran and Dwight Gayle will be recalled to the side.

The fans are also confident we can win this game.

No surprise they are tipped to win. Theyre a premier league side at home! The standard they play week in week out is much higher than ours. On the plus side, they’ll play with width and intent, whereas we seem to struggle more against crap teams that play 10 at the back and kick lumps!
Player for player its pretty even. A combined 11 for me would see an even mix.
McGregor probably shades it over our keepers. I’d take Robertson, Mason, Hernandez, Snodgrass whereas I’ve no doubt they’d love Diame back, and would happily take Ritchie, Lascelles, shelvey, Mbemba, Yedlin, Gayle.
    Should be a good game!

@Laurent Robert – Thauvin looks happy! Might explain his form, never wanted to come to Newcastle in the first place!
Saivet is playing for Les Verts in another new position! Having been a striker, then left winger, then defensive midfielder for Bordeaux, St Ettiene are using him in the hole (Not the black hole Newcastle put him in) behind the striker! His work rate seems to be effective pressing from the front!
For me, reckon Thauvin will get a big move at some point, possible that Marseille already rebought him back but can see him going to an Inter Milan/Valencia one day for 20m+
Could see Saivet coming back to play in the premier league. Strong, quick, hard working. Versatile! Not for Newcastle, reckon that ship sailed but for a Watford, stoke etc

    Yellow cards (see previous thread)

I thought they were wiped out at the end of December, not end of November as stated (toontaff2) on previous thread.

But – end of December is for the P L.
It’s end of November for the Championship.

So – our guys on 4 yellows will get a 1 match ban if
they pick up a yellow tonight but all yellows will be
    wiped out by Friday.

Could well affect selection for the game tonight.

The F.A’s lack of speed in Shelvey’s case really makes me think the evidence they have is very questionable.
My bet is, that they have borderline enough evidence to ban him by their rules but that newcastles lawyers could pull it apart if appealed which would look bad for the F.A.
My bet, already confirmed the lad allegedly abused speaks no English and it was reported by another player. And that Shelvey has witnesses in newcastles side that say he didn’t say whatever it is he is meant to have said. Already sounds like he said she said to me. Possible the Wolves player could be questionable if he had previous falling outs with shelve too! Or if English isn’t his first language either! Wolves had a lot of foreigners in their line up.
Think if shelvey was going to get a ban, he’d already have it! I mean what evidence is there to dig up? Not like their digging up a body or anything

@Budge – gotta be rafa with phelan as an assistant? Hes a great assistant to be fair, seems to have done really well in that role wherever he’s gone! Even after Man Utd!
Can honestly say, there isn’t many managers I’d rather have at Newcastle than Rafa. Maybe, just maybe Klopp?
The way the guy has thrown himself into both the job, and the city, he’s a class act! Given us a club to be proud of for the first time since Sir Bob was here!
