Rafa has just named his side for the EFL Cup quarter-final game at the KCOM Stadium tonight against Hull City and both Matz Sels and Achraf Lazzar are in the starting line-up – as well as Dwight Gayle.
Here is the team that Rafa will start tonight as just released on the Newcastle United Twitter account.
TEAM NEWS: Here is how Newcastle United will line up against @HullCity this evening. #NUFC pic.twitter.com/EedpUavHSD
— Newcastle United FC (@NUFC) November 29, 2016
So there’s a surprise there with Achraf Lazaar getting a start tonight at left-back as well as goalkeeper Matz Sels in the side.
It looks like that’s seven changes from Saturday’s starting line-up and Ciaran Clark is the only defender starting tonight who started on Saturday!
And Cheick Tiote and Daryl Murphy are on the bench.
Here’s the manager talking about the game tonight:
“At this stage of the competition, there were a lot of Premier League sides so it was always likely to be a difficult tie.”
“We have confidence, because we are doing well, but we have a lot of respect for Hull because they are a Premier League team and we will play away from home.”
“So we will approach the game with hope that we can do well – but also knowing that it will be a hard game against a side from a higher league.”
Three quarters of our fans in the poll expect us to win this game tonight.
It would be great to get through to the last four tonight.

Comment #83how the hell is shelvey playing in the championship …he dictated play in the first half
i think he’s world class..he was a defensive liability last year, but seems he’s improved that area immensely
some very good passing from hayden as well
the problem might come in the second half if newcastle dont control the game….can hayden and shelvey protect the back 4? im pessimistic

Comment #84We’ve been the better side here, shelvey and hayden keeping things ticking. diame doing well but needs to make better decisions before shooting long distance

Six shots to one and 61% possession…Newcastle are dominating but haven’t been able to find the net. Hull are poor. Very poor.

Comment #92Hayden, Shelvey and Diame looking good so far
I think Lazaar is doing well too (am quite focused on watching him as am sure a few are). He’s asking for the ball, always moving and doing the defensive side too, some of his passing is a bit iffy but tbf he’s barely played all season…so far so good i reckon

Shelvey has improved his stamina, lost weight and due to both of those is much more athletic and mobile. Makes a ll the difference for him.
Bet Huddlestone is looking at him thinking, if I could have got my ass into gear at some point in my career….. seems to have passed him by now, though I think Shelvey has more talent than Huddlestone ever possessed, he was once a similar player.
Similarly Hayden is also like a young version of Livermore with better physicality.
Took Livermore and Huddlesone until they were 25+ to realise you don’t get anywhere by sitting on a bench though and their time had passed in terms of development and growth.

Comment #96well on top but we need to score.
Shelvey dominating midfield, their only half way decent player is Snodgrass.
More of the same second half and we should coast it.
Hope saying that doesn’t jinx us.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see Murphy on after twenty mins.

Surely Hull have to play better in the second. Hopefully not.
We could do with a quick goal after half time.

Comment #105I think Lazaar has played well. He has gave the ball away a couple of times but generally looks tidy on the ball and has made some goods runs forward. We haven’t seen anything of his defensive abilities as Hull have offered very little going forward and when the have the have mainly gone down their left hand side,

Comment #106Totally dominating the game. If we can keep that up in the 2nd half it should be an easy win. Watching it on NJM Soccer/Kodi, english commentary.

Comment #109I would like to see Shelvey stop rushing towards the defenders when we are in possession at the back and let Hayden be the out ball when under pressure. Then lets see what he can do when the ball gets passed to him around the half way line or beyond. At the moment we are using too much energy and running out of possibilities when we get around the oppositions box.

Comment #110I don’t think Lazaar was bad at all. This is only his third appearance of the season so I’m quite impressed. Links up well and looks very clever with his first touches. A few loose passes but I’m sure that’s just him being rusty.

Comment #120Think we need some more pace and conviction on either or both wings. Crosses aren’t working so need to beat the fullback and get in behind.
Alternatively bring on Murphy.
