We are all gutted about what happened last night, but there’s some good comments this morning on Twitter from Newcastle fans – and what most of them say is right – basically we have to learn from the mistakes last night and move on.
We cannot overreact – well not too much – other than to get it out of the system.
These things happen in football and in life – you’ve got to be able to take the disappointments, sometimes they are bitter ones – like last night.
We’ll be moving on – and we need to get a win on Friday night at Nottingham Forest.

Time to get those blinkers off mate.
Rafa is not God almighty, he’s a good manager who can get things wrong.
Is it the goatee you’ve fallen for ?

Comment #2Very good first half but no cutting edge and chances missed. Sadly couldn’t beat 10 men and the longer it went with pens looming I had that sinking feeling. What s–te pens though it has to be said.
Shining light was Atsu when he switched to the left. Worst possible outcome was extra time and losing. But hey this is NUFC, push heartache aside and move on as we always do.

Comment #3We are missing a good, creative no 10.
Rafa must see this and hopefully in Jan we will get one.
Shelvey can spray a pass all over from the sweeper position but the intricate pass around the 18 yard box he rarely can.
Too many poor final balls into the box and Gayle is no target striker.
Teams pay their defence deeper to prevent the space behind.
We have done well so far but especially for home games I would like to see what Gayle and Mitro can do together.

Comment #5I am not the manager , and i don’t know the problem
but i watched so many football games in the last 5 years more than you can imagine and i can tell you few of our weaknesses :
It’s not normal when we don’t have DIRECT runners in our team …..
people who can run with the ball to disrupt the shape of the opposition and to not allow them to recover and
re position themselves defensively
one of our weaknesses too , our fullbacks take so much time to react when to go forward and cut inside …
we have no direct runners in the wide areas in our team to create space for teammates
We are so slow with the ball at the back and in the midfield , we take so much time looking for a teammate
so so so cautious with our passing maybe because
no one is moving and running to take the ball or to get behind the opposition apart from Gayle
EVEN !!!! even when we win a second ball we STILL play slowly and allow them to recover and keep the shape
so so sad , our chef need to fix lots and lots and lots and of things …
We need to pay top $ to get a proper smart #10 first ..!!

Comment #10my first post ! i greet u all !! may we all live see 2 see nufc lift a trophy !! imma start by saying im devasted for the cup for this was a big chance . the team did well in terms of playing ball they did well..but the last bit of class this team dont got it . i know he did well till now but gayle cant lace mitros boots big. i think there is big class diffrence. mitro got a lot more potential thats why i dont understand rafa not counting on him or mbemba when they got a much higer level than clark and gayle ?? we got very few players who can play ball at high level mitro, mbemba, jonjo, colback no more. rest og the players or drafters hardworking ofcourse they can produce time to time . but i think rafa should spend time on developing these players by giving them time not ruining there spirit !! when i see mbemba, mitro play i am shocked about what had happened ?? i am bigger fan of rafa than i was but when it comes to pure talent dude got issues an u see it in all the clubs hes been..real madrid got rid of him only for that reason not bcause of managment his he is top class tactacian !! but cmon rafa build your team on your best players !! and lets be honest o lot of the games we been lucky how long will it continue ? ill end it wit saying that sels is the worst keeper ive seen amazing how poor he is it was his fault his error. but we gotta stand behind the team

Comment #11I don’t like singling out players but Sels lost us the game. He should have done much better for their goal push the ball over the bar to the side etc. He also should have saved 2 of their penalties – he dived the right way and then let the ball through him. I know our penalties were cr*p but if he had saved a couple they would have been under more pressure for theirs.

Comment #12Mag52, sometimes these things happen. If you have that many shots in 32 games, there will be a much better chance of converting those shots. Lazaar’s was a few inches high. All the talk could have been different had any of those gone in.
I like how we generally played in that game. We looked quite classy with out 1 and two touch passing and shape throughout the game. We looked in control for a lot of the game.
It’s a shame more goals didn’t go in, but I’d much rather be having those chances, knowing that our players this eason having being sharing out the goals and our top scorer is on 13, than having 2 or 3 shots throughout the game. As Rotonda said, which happened before on many, many games in recent times.

Comment #13I was fuming last night in the manner we went out. Disgusting. Mat Sels is rubbish. He is the worst Goalkeeper I have ever seen in NUFC shirt apart from Jak Alwick and he was a kid so can’t really blame him. But this guy has bags of experience from plauing in Belgium. Whatever Benitez saw in this fool is way beyond me. The only bad buy he’s made it seems and it is seriousy costing us. We must get rid of him as he will never improve. I don’t care how young he is but a keeper that with all his experience and still can’t do the basics which is save a shot and parry it to the sides and out of danger is in the wrong profession and will never learn. I am also very dissappointed at how easy it was for Hull to get through our defense but the keeper should have done better again after a rather easy shot by them. Then the penalties is a gamble but my God they were awful but that is a gamble everytime, anything could happen there and it takes guts to take one in the first place.
I get nervous everytime the ball gets near him and that shouldn’t be the case especially for a Goalkeeper.
Sels- 4
6- Lazaar was very wasteful and rash in his passing nearly cost us the game a few times with his inaccurate passing.
7- Shelvey had a great 60min then went off the boil and misplaced passes. But did well overall really.
8- Lascelles and Clark played very well apart from that incident were we conceded.
6- Anita was decent but his final ball let him down.
6- Rithcie good first half but then ineffective as he looked tired.
5- Gayle had an off day after all his huffing and puffing failed to make much of an impact unfortunately and missed some good chamces. A bit critical of me but he is there to score goals and missed some when we know he could have done better. Maybe the weather didn’t help.
8- Gouffran probably one of the best we had out there last night he was everywhere but my oh my that penalty.
6- Diame was rather ineffective but managed to get the goal.
6- Atsu looked more lively as the game went on, did better when he was switched sides.
7- Murphey did well when he came on seemed like he didn’t miss a header and looked a threat from corners.
To summerize the team played very well the first half and in patches after that but we really held our own against a Premiership team. Tbh I think we are a better team than them. We could have done better after dominating so much but what can you do but try and try we did. It makes me sick in the manner we lost but hey tht’s football. What I do have clear is that Sels will never make it withbus and cost us dearly again. Hope he proves me wrong in the future but I seriously doubt it and feel he should be 3rd chiice when Elliot is back. So sad to see us lose out of a great 2 legged semi final chance but what can you do, until next year I guess.

Comment #14I remember a game we played against Bradford I think it was. Shearer and Ferguson battered them and we had shot after shot but couldn’t get the win. It was crazy that they didn’t go in. That’s with those two players.
It doesn’t mean we need a full set of new strikers because Shearer or Big Dunc couldn’t score in that game, it just means the ball wouldn’t go in in that game.
I’ve played in those types of games myself. It’s annoying, but the key is to still get in the right areas with good movement and actually have the shots. Do that in more games and hopefully there should be goal scoring rewards.

Comment #16In terms of comparing ourselves with PL opposition, we can judge ourselves to be only slenderly at that level. Otherwise, we did not really trouble them, even when they were down to ten men with two banks of four. Can excuse the frosty playing surface for some control issues, the better opposition for the real lack of authority.
Gayle did a lot well and as much wrong. Don’t know what’s happening to Ritchie. Diame and Shelvey should play DM. Gouffran used his experience well but lacks the ability to really cut through. Hayden is a soldier. Anita works hard but lost the ball at good opportunities. Lascelles & Clarke are doing marvellously. Lazaar could have done with trying to run with the ball and was also exposed when pressing, but would have been a hero if he had scored. Excellent supporters.

Comment #17Personally I was happy with Lazaar though I think some want him to fail to justify Dummett (and to prove a point over the perceived Dummett abuse) but he did very little wrong imo Anita was at best on par with him though his first touch was worse and his crossing was mostly pointless
Other than that Ritchie and Gayle had off days. Diame, Hayden and Shelvey held the midfield pretty easily. Gouffran ran a lot and worked hard but didnt really do too much for me Atsu did more when he came on
I thought Lascelles out performed Clark over all as well
And less said about Sels the better unfortunately

Comment #23Nice to see more balanced comments this morning. The level of hysteria last night meant I seriously couldn’t be bothered to join in.
We completely outplayed a PL club away from home, but messed up the shoot out. Even before the sending off we dominated the game and on another day would have won comfortably. Sometimes I wonder if some people even get football, it gets so silly on here at times.
Rafa built a team specifically to get promoted. He did not build a PL quality side and he emphasised this repeatedly. This will not be the team he fields when we get promoted. Some will stay, some will be ruthlessly cast aside. We may be surprised who goes as well.
Any game in the Championship we dominate to that extent we will win. In fact, only one side was ever going to win it in normal time or extra time. We missed our chances, we must accept that and move on. Gayle does exceptional against Championship clubs, but check his figures for the PL and it ain’t that good. He was bought to do a job in the Championship and he’s doing fine.
Sometimes in football you don’t get what you deserve – or why are sunlun still up there? 🙂 You lose games you shouldn’t lose, but that’s what makes the game such a worldwide success – you can’t predict it like a science.
Imo we played well but lost. Get over it and look forward. Not the end of the world and I for one can’t wait for Friday.

Comment #24Winning the League Cup and missing out on promotion would be sickening Ed. This defeat is simply disappointing and a little sobering. It reminds us that promotion is the imperative, and that we will require 4 to 5 top acquisitions once back, to separate us from the likes of Hull, and the 9 or so other bottom half sides. The good news is of course that almost certainly will go up, and can get the players we need, and will have the management team to secure an upper mid table finish once back.

Comment #2832 shots may be statistically right but Jakupovich was hardly troubled by any of them. Half were lazy or exasperated Hollywood efforts, way off target just like our 3 missed penalties. To say we don’t practise penalties because its not a game situation is a bit daft. May as well practise nowt then but general shooting practise should definitely be on the menu this week. We may have had lots of attacks but we scarcely got inside Hull’s 18 yard box

I watched the game in it’s entirety – like you I couldn’t be arsed with the hysterical numpties on here after the game.
Shock/Horror – PL side beats C/ship side at home in cup after extra time and penalties !!!!!!
It looks like Rafa’s going to go with Perez and Mitro in tandem with Dummett , Colback and Darlow returning at Forest.
What was noiticeable after extra time was Rafa making a list of penalty-takers to hand to the ref while Phelan already had one prepared on a printed sheet of paper !
The home PL side depending on a shootout ffs.

Comment #30I was one of the first to condemn Sela last night but on reflection that was a bit unfair.
He did make some very brave saves and for most of the game did ok. The problem with GK errors is that they cost matches as often as not. Look at Green’s howler against us. They only need to make one bad mistake in a game and they are called rubbish.
I still think he’ll not play Friday and Rafa (still all hail him) will go back to his best team with possibly Atzu and Murphy given a atart.
The Number ten Bambams is talking about is possibly in the Forest team, Lansbury! We ought to put a bid in for him?
The team will be fired up for Friday and I expect us to win.

They were replaying Hazaar’s shot onto the bar, when they suddenly went back live and the ball was in the net! One of our coaches concentrates on set-pieces, free-kicks and corners and we do have some brilliant set-pieces. Shame no one prractices penalties!

Comment #35I thought Atsu made a big difference when he came on. He was poor on Saturday, but so was everybody else so no biggie. When you need somebody to go past defenders at pace, he appears to be your man. Pulls the defence all over the place and that can only be good for the strikers. Ritchie appears to be struggling lately so maybe Atsu to start on Friday? If we’re going to play with a big striker then we should play with two wingers. Wonder if we’ll see young Callum Roberts get a game this season. Another creative wide man.

Comment #36We completely dominated a full strength PL team, away from home.
Thought Hayden MoM, Diame ran himself into the ground, Shelvey ran the show. Defence was solid, other than the goal. Sels was ok, until the goal.
Ritchie looks jaded. Gayle made great runs, could have had a penalty, which we would have obviously missed! But he did not have his shooting boots on!
Gouffy battled, Atsu was very good when he came on.
Lazaar was better, but did give the ball away a few times, poorly.
A very good performance. Obviously disappointed by the outcome, but we were the only side trying or looking like winning in 90 or 120 minutes!

Comment #39Toontaff, pretty much my own observations on the game mate. I don’t understand why people expect us to win every game and make such a fuss when we lose. I’m 59 and football’s always been like this for as long as I remember. Hull must be more concerned than us after that performance, because we dominated the game as the Championship side. Phelan claiming they deserved to win is just risible and actually embarrassing from a PL manager.

Comment #40Yeah, I also think that Diame should essentially be one of the 4 DM’s, and Perez behind either Gayle or Mitro. I’m happy to have Diame in the side alongside any of Shelvey, Hayden or Colback. In fact, any two of those 4 would seem more than capable at this level. I’d even prefer Gouffran as Perez’ cover to Diame, who really strikes me as ideally box to box, rather than someone who plays well between the lines in the final third.
