Rafa Benitez has said that although local lad Jack Colback is back in training from the eye injury he picked up, he will not be in the squad for today’s game.
We had Jack in the side so we have replaced him with 21 year-old Isaac Hayden.
Isaac Hayden – should start today
This is what Rafa has said today in the Chronicle about injured players Colback and Grant Hanley:
“Colback has to have another examination.” “He’s training but in terms of confidence it’s the last step.”
“Hanley’s running now and I think he will be training with the team next week.”
So here’s our revised side for today’s game against Birmingham City.
Darlow
Anita Lascelles (c) Clark Dummett
Shelvey Hayden
Ritchie Diame Gouffran
Gayle
A shock choice today could be that Rafa brings in the very experienced Cheick Tiote to partner Jonjo Shelvey?
What is your team for today?
Comments welcome.

They don’t always get it right in the bunker
A few shockers last season( even after deliberation ) but never anything as unjust as what we witnessed last Friday

Never will be intimated here myself here but have a feeling many are .
Always enjoy your posts with genuine wit / humour and a left field approach .
Still a few who post here I think are worth a read .
Hopefully those absent will return …speaking of which where’s Geordie two these days ?

Comment #5It looks to me like Yedlin has made the RB position his own. Considering Yedlin was at the press conference, I would be surprised if he isn’t in the side today.
I would be interested to see Yedlin (sporting his Ibrahim Ba) on the RW, switch Richie to LW, and play Anita in behind Yedlin.

Comment #6ofd – well thanks for that very kind of you.
Sometimes the obvious humour I try to inject is deliberately rejected by the Misery Brigade/those who want to be offended brigade.
But their jokes (really should say attempts) are fine and were obviously jokes when posted.
Ref the bunker in Oz – has it ever happened that the communication lines are down/faulty and the ref either does not get a reply or the reply is late.
What happened did the crowd get restless/did it spoil the game etc etc.
I think Geordie 2 is writing for another Toon blog.

As yet no issues with Comms drop outs
All NRL games tend to be televised and as yet never heard of any issues .
It’s similar to the cricket with appeals / decision pending/ insert add from kfc chick etc . Actually it has now become an accepted “feature ” of th game here .

Comment #14Yeah they definitely should use technology in the EPL, since all games are televised. It hasn’t just gotten key calls right in League, but having it has also added to the tension, and it also has given the players a little breather and so can actually improve the overall spectacle, rather than slowing it down as many thought it would. If anything the game has gotten faster and more exciting.

Agreed
In both codes of Rugby , as well as the obvious clarifying of decisions – it has cut out lots of the skulduggery that went on behind the refs back.
Would nancy-boy Lansbury have been so theatrical if he knew it would be up on the big screen seconds later ?

In the UK -as pointed out -it is used in the big rugby games- ref gets the answer back in seconds really without the game being spoilt at all.

Comment #23Also -as already pointed out – if the players know they will be caught out and sanctioned (there and then) it will inevitably lead to less play acting etc – which will lead to a better game.

Comment #27Couple of points about Ed’s “Rafa Reveals His Advice To Jonjo Shelvey” thread. Moving too fast with his threads this morning.
(So although delayed, on topic and submitted as a genuine talking point and not to provoke any forms of abusive backlash).
Firstly Ed’s take on the incident :-
“Jonjo Shelvey slipped into his past ways a bit when he lost control with Henri Lansbury and lashed out at him, but only after the Forest captain had done the same to him.”
Key words = “lashed out”
Rafa comments :-
“I didn’t have to say anything to him after the Forest game because he was apologising to everyone because he knew he made a mistake.”…………“Normally with Jonjo he’s fine in 99% of the situations and you have 1% where he loses control. ” “Hopefully he can control even this one per cent.”
Now then – I think it is rather obvious that making a mistake/losing control can in NO WAY be attributed to Shelvey not having done anything wrong nor with him pulling his leg out of a tangle or wiggling his leg.
It clearly suggests, no more than that, it means Shelvey kicking out.
Shelvey would not be apologising for pulling his leg out or doing nothing.
Also he would not be apologising for the ref sending him off.
He is apogolising on behalf of himself for committing an offence.
Opinion
And before anyone starts ranting and raving -the overturning of the red (s) does not mean nothing happened. His offence still occurred and has not been expunged – just the punishment has been reviewed.

Comment #29i think it’s going to be a great day today, i feel it’s going to be one of those days where it just goes right.
saying that, if i could make one change to the way he sets the team up, i would play Gayle in the role where Perez or Mo play and play Mitro up top as we don’t get enough from Mo or Perez other than running, i don’t think the position suits there style of play.
on another note, how good a coach is CH at Brighton? what a guy, what a gentleman. hope they finnish 2nd behind us.

Player apologising to team-mates for getting a red card is not an admission of guilt.
He could easily have said “Sorry lads but I did f**k all”

Comment #32mr T , with your greater logic skills, please inform us why the ref got it so wrong in this game. imo shelvey has nothing to say sorry for esp looking back with hindsight. something was made out of nothing and if anything shelvey was the victim 2times, once by the actor then by the ref

Comment #38Redcliffe fan as a kid. Liked League at school. Very exciting game to play, you’d get a bit roughed up, but the 80 minutes flew by, unless you were stuck out on the wing. Follow State of Origin pretty keenly. It’s a good game at the highest level. Not as keen on Aussie Rules or Union though and I think “soccer” will inevitably now reel the other footy codes in Australia, and surpass them. It’s always been a popular participation sport, but the A league is a pretty decent standard now, and is getting some big crowds. It’s just the better game and there’s no keeping it down.

Comment #39Going back to teams in the 50s and 60s tackles were harder then, we had a few that took no prisoners. Jimmy Scoular, Bobby Stokoe, McGarry and yes McNamee.
People didn’t need to feign injury, when they went down it was usually for good reason. there was still a degree of play acting but not so much as there is now.

Comment #40catchy – posted about this previously but short summary.
(please note this post is in reply to a fellow poster and not designed to invite an aggro).
My take on it.
Ref does not see the incident – thats obvious from the video.
Linesman sees something – not the whole incident and informs the ref.
Linesman has only seen Shelvey kicking out and Lansbury’s play acting (has not seen Lansbury fouling/scything down Shelvey)
On the basis of what he’s been told the ref correctly (at the time and from what he’s been told) sends off Shelvey for violent conduct and awards a penalty.
(Off ball incident adjudged to be violent in the box IS a penalty)
NUFC plead not guilty.
Commission review case with video and see entire incident and that no contact was made by Shelvey (or minimal?????) and see Lansburys deception.
With new rules (following Haidara case) the Commission are allowed to be flexible in their decision making.
Commision rule that as the contact did not occur/was minimal -the off the ball incident cannot be construed as violent . As such the ref should have shown a yellow card – hence error by ref in showing a red.
As the red is wrongly issued – three match ban is not appropriate -hence overturned.
(Dummett – ref error again – Lansbury definitely put the brakes on left a leg. But I think they will have adjudged – no goal scoring opportunity – hence red not appropriate).
