The Fairy Tale Continues – Rafa Keen To Keep This Player

Two players who are first choice at Newcastle this season – Yoan Gouffran and Vurnon Anita – two players who work their socks off for the team – have contracts which run out next June.

We had thought that Vurnon would get a new deal but not Yoan – but it looks like we wrong on that one – what – again?

Rafa was interviewed in the local press over the weekend and was asked specifically about the two stalwarts  and he said the club had already started to talk with their agents and that it was only a matter of time.

Yoan Gouffran – to get new deal at Newcastle

That’s really good news that Newcastle want to sign these two up who have simply thrived since Rafa came on board in March and Yoan in particular has been a player reborn at Newcastle.

This is what Rafa said when asked about the two players as reported in the Shields Gazette:

“The club is talking with the agents, and now it’s a question of time.”

“I know what we need, but it’s too early.” “We have to concentrate on the games and keep working in the same way to see if we can get the targets I have.”

“You have to wait.”  “I am really pleased with the squad.”

“But we know we have players who are at the African Cup of Nations and others who are out of contract.”

“So we have to try and balance the team as much as we can just in case.”

Gouffran and Anita can officially talk to other clubs in January and it doesn’t necessarily mean the players will stay on at Newcastle – it will depend on the contracts they are offered.

But they both seem to have bought completely into Rafa’s ways at Newcastle and they have to think we could be going places in the next year or two.

They are enjoying their football at the club so that has to be another big factor in Newcastle’s favor.

We’d like to see both players get good offers because they have both been instrumental to the success of Newcastle this season and of course Yoan scored his 5th goal of the season against Birmingham on Saturday.

Rafa has transformed Vurnon into a terrific right-back who could well get his place back on the Dutch side.

And it’s nothing short of a fairy tale for the Frenchman who joined us four years ago from Bordeaux – but he deserves a new deal because he really has been great for Newcastle this season.

What do you think?

You asked about Reading FC. Right I live there and me son and the In-laws have season tickets and other connections

    1. They are up for sale, including selling off land .Not gone down well.
    2. Football style, frustrating a large number of fans as keeping the ball at the back way to much.
    3. Keep winning, and riding their luck.
    4. Need investment, crying out for a center forward
    5. Credit to them, for being them. But most except to do a Huddersfield and more than happy for play offs at best.
    6. My view, well done, but a few injuries and there buggered no back up and all the above.
    7. by all accounts Stam is a top bloke and I think He plays football the right way.

I think Gayle not getting the love has more to do with him coming across as the type of berk who gets 2 teeth knocked out for gobbing off about his wages. I’m thinking Bellamy here, good player, poor excuse for a role model. Hope Gayle sorts himself out, as I rate him much higher than Mitro personally. Nothing against Mitro, appart from the loose temper an occasional lack of effort, but Gayle always troubles defences with pace.

    …and this lads on fire!’…

Surely the fact Gayle gets a standing ovation when he goes off tells you he is loved by the fans. That he doesn’t have a song is pretty meaningless.

Mitro has a song, gets the crowd going with his passion and has a pretty good record here despite the detractors views on him.

I don’t want to get in an argument over the merits of the pair, start either regularly at this level and they will get goals regularly.

Mitro divides opinion with people. The crowd singing argument wouldn’t happen at all if one of the two didn’t divide opinion. Clearly Gayle is very popular. He’s scoring and playing well. Mitro also has a pretty good record this season, particularly when you take into account he is given less opportunity to build match fitness or momentum.

Both are liked, both are better than this level, both will get goals when given the chance.

That standing ovation was the first recognition I’d noticed. How is it meaningless if the only way fans show appreciation is by singing your name and they don’t sing it.

On topic, players like Gouffran and Anita could be solid squad players next year. Nowt more though, and there is a lack of vision in thinking that extending their deals is moving the club forward. Maybe one of the two – in which case for me Anita, but both/either staying limits our further development in recruiting players to be named in the 25. If we look to Yedlin to be first choice full back, is Anita the right person to keep as back up? Shouldn’t we aim higher?

Is Goofy the answer on the left wing? He is having a great season this year, where a good player with huge work rate shines, but can he do it at a higher level? He was never better than a hard working squad player at Prem level. Why now he is knocking on, would he be more than that?

I like both players, both give it their all, but where do we want to be? Where is Rafa aiming at? Are they enough for that, should we be looking at better?

I had a season ticket for a long time, not every player had a song. Doesn’t mean they aren’t liked or appreciated. I’ve not seen many people say they dislike Gayle. I still speak to matchers not on here, again, none have alluded to fans disliking Gayle. Mitro demonstrates a passion and a desire that Geordies can relate to. Kilcline did the same, I can’t remember Kevin Scott complaining when fans sang about Kilcline and not him, even though he was starting games.

Gayle doesn’t have that passion, but he is performing well and scoring goals. Point me in the direction of any fan complaining about him doing that?

People have been commenting on Gayle’s celebration alluding to him feeling like he is under appreciated. If he thinks that now, then he is in serious trouble when he goes through the inevitable bad patch in his career as it seems to indicate he doesn’t have the mental strength to cope with…. not even criticism, but just a lack of having his ego massaged. The teeth incident points at an issue there as well.

Gayle had commented earlier in the week (I think, maybe the week before) about the passion and noise from the fans every game. Maybe the cupping the ear was a nod to that rather than something more sinister.

Passion is possibly the wrong word, he maybe doesn’t wear his heart on his sleeve and do it as demonstrably as Mitro does. I’d say most Geordies are pretty emotional and pretty open to showing their colours and passion when it comes to football. Gayle may have the same passion and desire to do well for Newcastle as Mitro does, but Mitro’s openness with it sets him apart.

Probably not a popular thought on here, but delighted Ronaldo got the Balon d’Or. talent, passion, hard work and dedication. A lot of arrogance as well, but for me the best all round player, even if I’d fully agree with anyone who wanted to argue Messi is more talented and skilful.

Tough luck for any top player to have come up against them, between them 9 years in a row, since Kaka in 2007. Incredible feat by them and it would be difficult to argue that their dominance hasn’t been justified. They are both up there with the best of all time, but probably not quite the best.

Never before have 2 players dominated this award so completely over any period greater than 2 or 3 years. Standards slipping, or are these two genuinely that good that they would have been such strong contenders for the best part of a decade in previous eras?

Platini won 3, but never came in the top 3 aside. Keegan and Rumenigge won two with a second apiece as well. Cruyff won 3 with one third. Messi and Ronaldo have been in the top 3 since 2007, except 2010 when the World Cup win pushed Ronaldo out.

Thanks, good to see Heardman back and scoring. Needs a loan come Jan, same with Gibson I’d imagine, although without actually being able to watch it’s difficult to gauge how they are progressing from the soundbites I get.

Would be interesting to see/know how Findlay is going. He wasn’t a name that cropped up as a prospect when I was there in Feb, and for them to release him would be unusual if they thought they could make money from him. Seems to get reasonable reports though generally, and hopefully that is an error on Celtic’s part.

Happy to see Curtis Good back and playing. I’d say too late for him here now, but hopefully he can still go on to make a reasonable career for himself playing the game.
