The Fairy Tale Continues – Rafa Keen To Keep This Player

Two players who are first choice at Newcastle this season – Yoan Gouffran and Vurnon Anita – two players who work their socks off for the team – have contracts which run out next June.

We had thought that Vurnon would get a new deal but not Yoan – but it looks like we wrong on that one – what – again?

🙂

Rafa was interviewed in the local press over the weekend and was asked specifically about the two stalwarts  and he said the club had already started to talk with their agents and that it was only a matter of time.

Yoan Gouffran – to get new deal at Newcastle

That’s really good news that Newcastle want to sign these two up who have simply thrived since Rafa came on board in March and Yoan in particular has been a player reborn at Newcastle.

This is what Rafa said when asked about the two players as reported in the Shields Gazette:

“The club is talking with the agents, and now it’s a question of time.”

“I know what we need, but it’s too early.” “We have to concentrate on the games and keep working in the same way to see if we can get the targets I have.”

“You have to wait.”  “I am really pleased with the squad.”

“But we know we have players who are at the African Cup of Nations and others who are out of contract.”

“So we have to try and balance the team as much as we can just in case.”

Gouffran and Anita can officially talk to other clubs in January and it doesn’t necessarily mean the players will stay on at Newcastle – it will depend on the contracts they are offered.

But they both seem to have bought completely into Rafa’s ways at Newcastle and they have to think we could be going places in the next year or two.

They are enjoying their football at the club so that has to be another big factor in Newcastle’s favor.

We’d like to see both players get good offers because they have both been instrumental to the success of Newcastle this season and of course Yoan scored his 5th goal of the season against Birmingham on Saturday.

Rafa has transformed Vurnon into a terrific right-back who could well get his place back on the Dutch side.

And it’s nothing short of a fairy tale for the Frenchman who joined us four years ago from Bordeaux – but he deserves a new deal because he really has been great for Newcastle this season.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

    Lilongwe,
Where has it been said once that the fans don’t like Gayle, as myself, hibbit and sitc have mentioned certain sections of fans haven’t taken to him, not that they dislike him.

Setting aside the question about whether or not Anita and Gouffran should be retained, isn’t it the case that if they’re not offered contracts they can talk to other clubs and leave on a free in the summer?

So, is Rafa looking to keep them for next season or ensure he can get a fee for them this window?

    Jail,
Semantics. Not taken to him, disliked him. I’ll retract the not liking him bit if you want, and replace it with not taken to him. That doesn’t affect any of the content in the rest of the post. Where has someone said they haven’t taken to him? Just cause his name isn’t sung doesn’t mean people haven’t taken to him.

I like Gayle. Liked him at Palace, but it’s hard to idolise any player when we are in the Championship, and a player who struggled for regular games in the top flight before he came to us. Mitrovic is easier to get excited about, because of the charisma and passion and style of play and potential. Gayle has been great, but he hasn’t done it at the clubs true level.

Anita and Gouffran are obvious candidates to be retained, because of their epl experience. The question is whether they’ll sign knowing it’s likely they’ll fall down the pecking order. Certainly I think Gouffran will be replaced as a starter, although Yedlin and Anita are decent options at right back and may well remain so once back.

    Jimmy,
An argument could certainly be made for Anita given his experience and versatility. But if Yedlin can’t displace a midfielder shoehorned into the right back spot, then questions should be asked. Same goes for Lazaar, although at least Dummet is a natural defender.

Lazaar you can say he is adjusting, but Yedlin has a Prem season under his belt and really should be the more regular option if we are to move forwards with him.

Gouffran is at his level, and fair play to him, he is doing it. Never more than average Prem back up though, even at his peak and we need serious investment in that spot if we go up.

Both okay, but it depends what the target is next year. Anything more than survival, and they should be allowed to move on and be upgraded.

    Jail,
I haven’t read all the posts, so I apologise if I’m covering ground that has already been trodden and left behind. Just read a few posts and thought I’d throw my tuppence worth in as I don’t see and haven’t really heard any suggestions of under appreciation. Gayle actually praised the crowd recently, and I’d say his cupped ear celebration was more an homage to that and the fans rather than anything more sinister.

Anyway…. A great way to get the disappointing spell out of the system. Hopefully we can put another nice little run together over the festive period, and ourselves and Hoots pull further away from the rest. Good year if we win the league and Hoots gets promoted in second with Brighton.

Wigan next, hopefully feet are firmly back n the ground. Team selection will be interesting, can see a few changes being made, but more likely in the attacking areas then at the back.

Speaking of the back, it will be interesting to see what happens with Mbemba. Rumours of Arsenal after him at the back end of the summer, and now behind Clark and Lascelles. He was overrated on here due to peoples willingness to blame Colo for everything, but he is young and can learn. If he doesn’t get more game time though, surely he will look to move?

    Lilongwe,
I can definitely see him being sold in the summer, I think a top quality CB who can command the box will be brought in as we are still vulnerable at set pieces and someone will have to go, he can command the biggest fee and as you say won’t be happy sitting on the bench where as Hanley seems to have accepted his lot. People say about Hanley not being good enough but how many clubs have four top quality CB’s in their squad, expect for the ibvious ones.

Yeah I think if Gouffran is effectively third choice, and Anita perhaps ideally second in their current positions, we can potentially have a top half, top 8 group. Both have decent epl experience, and importantly know what Benitez wants.

    Jail,
Yeah, Hanley is the obvious option as the next Williamson. Happy to be back up, but dependable if not top end. He won’t go in Jan cause of AFCON, but he would definitely be up there for the summer.

If Lazaar and Yedlin don’t step up, and put greater pressure on Anita and Dummet, then I’d say our defence probably needs serious work in the summer if we are to kick on to where we all believe Rafa wants to take us.

Mbemba won’t go in Jan cause of AFCON, that is a bit unclear in my previous post. Mind, I doubt Hanley will cause of AFCON either….

    Lilongwe,
Rafa said in the phone in that we’ll need better players, we obviously can’t just go and buy eleven top quality all at once so I think we’ll have a transition period or two while the team is brought up to top quality, like I said earlier as much as I like The Houff I’ll be disappointed if he’s here nect season.
