It looks like Sammy Ameobi may be given once last chance to impress at Newcastle, as Rafa Benitez has suggested he could help Newcastle in our promotion drive.
That push for promotion was hit further yesterday with a surprise loss at 3rd bottom Blackburn Rovers, who won their first game since beating us 1-0 at St. James’ Park near the end of November.
Sammy Ameobi – has returned to Newcastle
Ameobi has scored four goals for Bolton in his half season loan spell and has shown flashes of the form we know he is capable of.
But maybe Rafa wants to take a look at him for a couple of weeks to see if he should keep him at Newcastle or let him continue on loan at Bolton Wanderers.
This is what Rafa has said about the 24 year-old:
“He has done well with Bolton.” “I think he’s a player who can play in the wide areas.” “If he is fine, he can give us something.”
“We have players going to the Cup of Nations. We have to be sure we have some players. If he’s doing well, why not?”
“It depends on him. It depends on how much he can give to us.”
Newcastle will now lose Chancel Mbemba, Christian Atsu and Mo Diame to the African Cup of Nations and we are short of a winger – one position Rafa wanted to strengthen in January.
We lost Rolando Aarons with injury in November and we will lose Atsu for up to five weeks.
So maybe Rafa will keep hold of Ameobi until he brings that winger in and if he cannot get one in this month he could keep Sammy as back up through the end of the season.
That could be Rafa’s thinking as it’s always difficult to bring in good players in January.
Sammy has played 66 times for Newcastle with 4 goals and 8 assists and his contract runs out in June and we’d be very surprised if he gets a contract extension at his home town club.
